McCarthy confirms Neal knee injury

Posted by Vic Ketchman, packers.com editor on August 16, 2011 – 1:50 pm

Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy confirmed in his post-practice press conference that defensive end Mike Neal did, in fact, sustain a left knee injury in the early stages of Tuesday’s training camp practice at Ray Nitschke Field. Neal’s feet tangled while working against a blocking bag in a defensive line drill, causing him to fall awkwardly. He immediately began clutching his left knee.

“Tomorrow will tell more of the story,” McCarthy said, referring to further medical evaluation¬†that will determine whether Neal undergoes an MRI scan.

Neal left the field under his own power but with limp. He did not return to the practice field.

“You worry any time any of your players go down and falls. It makes you nervous. As far as the defensive line, we have healthy competition. We were expecting big things from Mike as a contributor this year,” McCarthy said.

They should have kept Jenkins! He was cheap to keep and now we are in trouble!

While I am at it. I watched the game against the brown’s and thought we looked terrible! Then look at McCarthy’s comments and he is giving out praise?? He should be cracking heads! Again no running game and the defensive line and secondary could,nt stop the browns! We have a lot of work to do and Jenkins should have never been let go.

Eleven million is cheap?!?!? Trust in TT.. haven’t you guys learned that yet???

We hear about individual player grades for practices & games. Do coaches reveal each guy’s grade to him privately? Or to all the players in their position group or to the whole team? Also, can u comment on how it affects interpersonal dynamics between players?

Injuries happen on all teams, especially this year, compounded by less recovery time due to the shortened training camp period. We have a proven track record that someone steps up. I, for one am not panicking!!!

I would have been upset in the past about what seems to be an easy going coach. I also thought that Ted Thompson was crazy.. With the number of injuries and the success that the team had last year I have given up any criticiszm I would have. Just think about what they did with the team last year. I beleive they really do know what they are doing. It’s easy for us to look in and question their leadership. I agree that we looked terrible against the Browns. I believe Thompson and McCarthy were looking at something more important than winning the game.

Have you guys not learned yet that preseason means nothing? Does it matter how our defense looks with 3rd / 4th string d-backs playing – and Capers running a vanilla defense…..please people – save the panic for the regular season. Am concerned about Neal though. We need him.

  8. By Jason on Aug 16, 2011 | Reply

i cant believe im hearing someone complain about our d-backs and d-line being terrible, ITS PRESEASON! its not about winning the game its about individual players playing there role and showcasing themselves to there best abilities. Its a scrimmage to get a semi-feel of a real game time atomosphere. I dont wanna here people going “the end of the packers is at hand cuz we lost to the browns!” because DUDE its the first preseason game! give me a break.

We need as many healthy defensive ends as we can get since we decided to let Jenkins go. However, we should be fine. My thoughts are to play Green, Raji and Pickett which will allow all the linebackers make the big plays. Whatever happens I have complete faith in our scheme, coaches and players. No need to worry yet fans! =)

I am tell ya they had Jenkins at a bargin price! Her does have a history of injury but when combined with our depth it would have been perfect!

  11. By Jim McCarthy on Aug 16, 2011 | Reply

First of all! it is hear, not here! However it is not that they played so bad it’s the cookies and milk McCarthy gave them after such a bad performance!

  12. By Jim McCarthy on Aug 16, 2011 | Reply

Did anyone see the game??!! They couldn’t stop a run, also couldn’t run and they were beat bad in the secondary! I have been a loyal fan for 50 years and never have I seen a coach praise players after such a bad performance. If it was lombardi he would be crackin heads!

I don’t believe its a big deal about Neal, Yeah we had jenkins last year but we went all year without neal, ted will get the ends together and you’d better believe they will be ready to play!!!! As for the preseason game it was just that a preseason game, yeah lee looked terrible, but jus imagine if woodson and williams would have been in there? The PACK and the coaching staff and TT are all there, S,S

There was clearly an attempt to keep Jenkins. But to late, he explained – he would have wished to get a new contract at the start of 2010.
Often veterans in any sport drop theire payments not before but just after an release… it is human nature. And tehrefrom the earnings from Phillie are not for sure the same he would accepted here. Ruining the future Salary CAP for CJ, who got injured often, too???
It is not nice but normal you can await more injuries from a veteran than from a younger player. Under the cap it is useful not to keep all, especially not the older core-players if you have to resign them expensivly.

And to the guys, “so smart now”: What if CJ would get an injurie as he did often enough?
I am hope for 2-3 DE/DT to come in for competing, off the waifers or some UFA now. Just to teach them DLine procedures until you maybe need them.

CJ is gone – so afterthoughts do not safe any future.

    GO PACK GO!

Who is this ‘Lionsfan’ ??? And can we get him out of here ??? The Lions haven’t done anything yet and haven’t done anything since Bobby Lane. The Lions should concentrate on trying to get by Chicago and Minnesota ! As far as the NFC NORTH in 2011 is concerned…. THAT’S OURS !!!! Like last year, we PACKERS simply concentrate on the game at hand, on preparation, on team chemistry and with our talent, should REPEAT !!!!

Our ‘Cowardly Lion’ friend can only speak of Thanksgiving…. But, wait until the last game of the season at LAMBEAU – New Year’s Day, when we shall feast on the LIONS…. Breakfast…. Lunch…. Dinner…. and Post-Game Tailgate Celebration Meal !!!!

Can someone please explain to me why we did not hang on to cullen jenkins. Everyone raves about all the great moves that the packers make in the draft. This is obviouslly true. That being said, I find myself asking what is going on in the front office of Green Bay very often. I know that TT knows what a free agent is. I really think that TT trys proving himself at that aspect too much. Once in a while a big name free agent can help. (Reggie White, Andre Rison, Charles Woodson…) One that we could have replaced jenkins with is Osi U. Anyway hope that Mike Neal will live up to all the hipe, and squash all doubts that anyone has.
