Driver continues upward arc, scores 26 on “Dancing”

Donald Driver

Three weeks into his stint on “Dancing with the Stars,” Packers WR Donald Driver’s progression as a dancer is mirroring that of his football career. Driver has steadily improved his score each week, going from 21 in week 1, to 24 in week 2, and 26 in Monday night’s show.

Driver turned in an emotional performance, dedicating his rendition of the rumba to a friend lost to cancer in 2010 — the same friend who introduced Driver to his wife, Betina. Driver explained that his friend died in his arms. “I grabbed his hand. All he could do is look at me,” Driver said. “And tears rolled down his eyes. He took another breath. And that was it. And I never let him go.”

Driver and partner Peta Murgatroyd, the last of 11 duos to perform in Monday’s show, danced to Mariah Carey’s “One Sweet Day.”

And what did each judge think of the pair’s execution?

“The passion that you just expressed was mesmerizing,” said Carrie Ann Inaba, who marked Driver and Murgatroyd with a 9. “I was truly touched.”

Len Goodman gave the pair an 8, explaining, “I didn’t expect such a great, big, hunky-dunky football guy to come out and dance with such warmth and emotion. Awesome.”

Judge Bruno Tonioli rounded out the scorecard, telling Driver, “You push yourself to the limit every time.” Tonioli awarded the Packers’ all-time leading receiver with a 9. Driver and Murgatroyd’s 26 was the 4th-highest score of the evening.

After the dance, Driver gave some simple advice: “You need to cherish every moment,” Driver said. “Live life to the fullest.”

Eliminations continue on “Dancing with the Stars.” Viewers can vote via phone and text message for Donald only on the night he performs; online voting ends at 10 a.m. CT the following day. Log on to abc.com to vote.

ARE YOU SURE DONALD DRIVER IS NOT A PROFESSIONABLE DANCER INCOGNITO AS A FOOTBALL PLAYER (THE BEST) ALSO WITH (THE BEST TEAM “THE PACKERS) THAT DANCE WAS THE BOMB!!!!!

Donald did great once again! I am irritated that he keeps getting lower scores than others even though I feel he has danced much better than those others. Len giving an 8 again is a joke seeing the scores given to some others being higher and the dancing much worse than DD.

Why haven’t there been some Packers in the audience supporting him? When Heinz Ward was on the show, several Steelers showed up every week with their Terrible Towels to cheer him on! It would be nice to see a few Packers do the same for Donald. He’s doing just great!

Lynn B. – If you look at 1:47 in the vid above, that’s Josh Sitton sitting behind Driver’s family. He tweeted about it last night and said even he got a little teary eyed! :)

Mr. Driver is the kind of role model our young people need. His selflessness and willingness to share his blessings with others is such an inspiration to many. He is the reason I am a Packers fan. Mr. Driver, you may not remember but a friiend of mine with a severely autistic daughter ran into you and your family at WalMart in DePere one day. You took the time to speak with him and thank him for thanking your children for sharing their daddy with all of us. you will never know how your kindness affected him. God bless you and your family. Thank you for all the “unseen” things you do for others. Your and your family’s rewards shall be great.

Donald, felt the sadness in you . It is not esy losing a friend or family member to cancer. You danced with such emotion, smoothness through Petra’s and your dance routine. We love you Donald and one day we all will be together again in Gods Kingdom. Your faith has made you and your family very strong. Donald you are a genuine caring, loving person,an excellent role model for all. I’m coming with family to watch you and your team at Timnber Rattler Stadium. Another unselfish fund raiser to help the community.

I think it just shows that donald has a great sense of character. remembering his friend with that dance, like how he never has selfish on the football field. how can you hate a guy like that. i know i cant

Last night’s dance was incredibly moving. I don’t think that Donald has received the marks that he deserves, either, but Packer fans can make up for this oversight with their votes!

James Jones was in last night’s audience, too, according to a post that appeared on another site. It would be nice to see a group of Packers in the audience when Donald reaches the finals.

I agree with Lynn B… although Sitton was sittin’ behind the Driver family, unless one is a Packer fan, he’s not that visible… being a Steeler fan (born, raised in Pittsburgh) as well as a Packers fan, agree that Steeler Nation’s support was a lot better for Heinz Ward… both Heinz and DD give their team and their fans their absolute maximum effort on the field and I think Donald’s teammates have been conspicuous by their lack of physical support in the audience… if the role was reversed, you can bet that Donald Driver would be in that audience supporting and cheering up a storm for his teammate on the dance floor…

Donald Driver will always be remembered as a guy who never gave less than a 100% full out effort and it shows in everything he does. Football, charity, dancing, everything.

It’s that quality of character that, even as skills diminish, make a guy like DD invaluable to a team. I’m just glad he’s on the one for which I root! He makes everyone better.

No doubt his teammates ARE watching… there or on TV and, the younger ones especially, realize that giving 100% is the only way to do anything. No matter what the endeavor. Go Donald Go!

BTW… I think it is Hines Ward. Although I got a chuckle on Heinz. Maybe it’s word play I never thought of until now. Heinz Field. Hines Ward. Heinz Ward.

Donald Driver is a true icon as a football player, dancer, and role model for the community. I will vote for him as long as he is on DWTS. Keep up the good work and just know we are all with you and supporting you.

Great, heart-felt performance,double-D! The Judges continue to under-mark your performances. You came prepared for the competition. Your dedication to the program, and physical discipline, I believe, are beginning to be taken notice by the judges. Len Goodman consistently under-marks many contestants, in order to urge on improvement, so do not let his latest grade of “8” discourage you. Professional athletes traditionally do well on DWTS. Continue to be dedicated to steady improvement and it will definitely be noticed by both the judges and the voters viewing (and voting) at home ! Plus, keep flashing that winning smile and attitude as you move up the show’s leader board !!!

  33. By stevoatoz on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

OK,Packers team-mates and coaches … Get down to L A CA and route on the most technically sound competitor on DWTS. Get into the audience and give the great Donald Driver the support he truly deserves! Their visible support will surely coax votes out of the viewing Voters at home. This truly decent man deserves your support. It would be an injustice if Donald does not go deep into this competition. It’s more than obvious that he is putting all his effort into this opportunity to flash that winning smile of his upon the viewing audiences on the show and around the country. So, Voters,- Vote!

Donald, you are are a great dancer. Wow. You always are a gentleman both on and off the field. I look forward to seeing you dance every week, just as I look forward to watching you play each week during the football season. I am wearing my #80 jersey while you dance.Know that you are a beloved and respected man. Let’s get Clay and Aaron, and more teammates out there to support you.God bless you and your family. Go Donald go!

Amen to you being a great dancer Donald. Is there anything you can’t do? I look forward to seeing more of you on the dance floor and on the field.

James Jones was in the audience. He was onscreen maybe 3 94 4 seconds in one of those passing audience shots. If you blinked or are just a casual fan you would not have seen him. But I missed Sitton myself. DD will win over the judges.

DD is the perfect guy for dwts he always devotes himself fully to the task at hand I sure hope the Packers keep him around this season because it would break packer nations heart not to see him on the field this year. When Donald makes a play there is just a warm feeling in your heart much warmer than when the younger guys make a play, I know it has something to do with the fact that we don’t know how much longer we get to watch him play, but i sure hope to have more of those feelings this year.

Calling all Packers who live in California—Get yourselves down to LA to support Donald Driver!! That means YOU Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews! Would love to see some more visible support for him. Glad that Sitton and Jones were there.

I too wonder where the Packer support is-Aaron has been doing commercials for the Brewers but isn’t he from California? Come on guys-show some support for one of the most genuine guys on the team! We love you Donald.
