Matthews vows defense will improve

Posted by Mike Spofford on July 28, 2012 – 2:03 pm

LB Clay Matthews spoke to reporters after Saturday’s practice for the first time in training camp, and when asked whether the Packers’ defense would improve in 2012, he basically said the Dom Capers-coordinated unit has no choice.

“We need to be better,” he said. “Obviously when you finish 32nd, that’s not acceptable, especially for the way in which we played the first two years under Dom’s scheme. So we need to get better, we will get better, and I think the guys we brought in here, the attitude, the learning experience from last year, I think we will be better.”

One of the guys brought in, of course, is Nick Perry, who has been with the first unit at outside linebacker opposite Matthews since the day he arrived. When he’s not in the middle of a play or drill, Perry is often seen either chatting with Matthews or position coach Kevin Greene, and Matthews complimented his willingness to learn.

Mentoring a younger player is a bit of a new role for Matthews, but he’s embracing it so far.

“We work in unison together, so obviously he needs to look to me to give him advice,” Matthews said. “We’re going to be working together on the field a lot, so I need to be a mentor towards him, whether I want to or not. But I think that’s the natural progression of not only having the same position on the field, but me, as far as my maturation, going into my fourth year, and believing that I can be a leader.”

In other news:

–LB Desmond Bishop admitted he’s a bit frustrated with his recurring calf injury. He’s dealing with it now after having missed three games last season with the same problem. He said he didn’t have a timetable for his return, but he said he’s in no way concerned about this latest problem lasting until the start of the regular season.

“Minor setback,” he said. “It’s not as bad as it was last year. That’s the positive.”

–One player quietly off to a strong start in camp is WR James Jones. He has made multiple catches by leaping high over defenders to haul the ball in, including one Saturday over CB Sam Shields. The only blemish on Jones’ first three days of camp was his fumble on Saturday, when he was stripped by CB Davon House after making a reception. Jones admitted House “got me good.”

“Aaron has been throwing the ball up pretty good, letting us go up and make some plays,” Jones said. “That’s good, because when the games come, it’s going to be a lot of jump balls, a lot of competitive balls, so to get them started in camp early will help us out down the road.”

–Undrafted rookie RB Marc Tyler has changed uniform numbers. Through the spring and the first two days of camp, he was wearing No. 27. On Saturday, he switched to No. 26, which had been S Charlie Peprah’s number. Peprah was released on the eve of camp.

Tyler wore No. 26 in college at USC. That was also the number worn by his father, Wendell Tyler, a former Pro Bowl RB for the L.A. Rams and San Francisco 49ers.

Well, if #52 says the defense will improve, who am I to say he’s wrong. With all the picks in the draft defensive players, I doubt we’ll see a repeat of last year. With a 32nd ranked D and we went 15-1, watch out this season. Oh man, talk about scary. I’m sure those teddy bears and queens fan are a little nervous, as well they should be. THE MOST DANGEROUS TEAM IN THE NFL, THE GREEN BAY PACKERS!!!

38 takeaways, and still the 32 ranked defense, because they gave up a league record number of passing yards.

38 takeaways, a league high, on a defense that had virtually no effective pass rush. Well that has now changed, Jerel Worthy and Mike Daniels are the real deal, and they automaticly improve that d-line, especially with Mr. Raji and Mr. Pickett already there, then add in Nick Perry, Dezman Moses, and a very good rotation of linebackers, and even if GB’s total defense is only middle of the road this season, yes, watch out rest of the league.

Especially with the offensive weapon which is going to be Randall Cobb, who has been lining up pretty much everywhere on offense.

Packers are passe’…take it to the bank. Their obvious problem is their keystone cop secondary (see them falling over themselves defending Hakeen Nicks or Vincent Jackson)! Last anyone looked, Jerel Worthless wasn’t playing safety! They’re decidedly overmatched and all arrows point down–the 15-1 record was a farce wrapped in a mirage! Bears, 49ers & Eagles will duke it out for the NFC crown. Packers scrape & claw with the worst defense and running game in the league…..it’s over!

Come back againg after the season when Da Bears finsh 3rd just ahead of the 4 & 12 Queens and let us all know why the Packers swept the conference again and why Da Bears just couldn’t get it done again. Cutler will never be in the same class as Rodgers and Forte is good, but not that good. So sing your song now cause you’ll be a mute when the season ends.

Fun to be a Viking and Packer fan, 32nd ranked defense bummer but still 15-1 that’s impressive. We all know this team relies on #12 without him 5-11. Remember to walk on egg shells at every practice and games as Rogers will be a target for all team defenses. Enjoy the success as it could be a long season if #12 goes down….. , good luck to a great franchise….and Go Vikings!!!

All any decent coordinator needs to do is look at pecker film against KC,Detroit, San Diego, or the Giants to know (with hilarious certainty) that the peckers have zero answer for big wide-outs! Now, enter Brandon the Beast Marshall & Alshon Jefferies on the outside for the Bears and re-assign the 68 year old Woodson to safety(great but archaelogically old), and it’s a wing and a prayer that midgets like Sammy Davis Shields and Travesty Williams have a chance outside at corner, let alone a rookie corner from Vanderbilt! It’s over for the Packers baby……can you say “33rd ranked defense!”

  9. By Benwah on Jul 29, 2012 | Reply

Wow–glad to see the Bares fans happy w/their new additions, too. However, we’ll see very quickly who’s tops in the NFC North. In the NFC, it’s close on which division is the best, but I think we’d all agree it’s here at the North. Whoever wins the North division will be in the top 2 in the overall NFC.

    GO PACK!!!!

  10. By Benwah on Jul 29, 2012 | Reply

33rd ranked defense? Wow–did you think of that all by yourself? Marshall was a decent addition, but considering your best WR was a converted DB, you had to go get Butler’s BFF. As for Alshon, that fat a$$ can’t run down the field w/out thinking about getting another snack on the sidelines. Big receiver is putting that mildly.

I know I may be a little late on this comment but this is a response to the bears fan who talks such a big game.
2011. Packers with the 32nd ranked defense NEVER trailed the bears at any point through 8 quarters.
    2011 Week 3 Cutler 302 yds 2TDs 2INTs Sacked twice
Rushing 12attempts 1.1yds per rush for a whopping 13 total yards.
    Final Score GB-27 CHI-17
    Week 16 Mclown 242 yds 1TD 2INTs 0-sacks
Rushing 42 Att 4.7 yds per Rush for 199 total yds.
    Final score GB-35 CHI-21.
So even after that poor defensive performance they still STOMPED YA! By the way, that same offense is coming at ya this year and you better PRAY that the defense doesn’t improve. Nah, don’t matter anyway they will still crush the wimpy gutless bears. Brandon Marshal is ok but he isn’t Jerry Rice re-born. Enjoy another year of mediocrity.

Pecker fans a little insecure?…..Bears Year Ahead is about to be your reality—the peckers will limp out of Lambeau on the evening of 9/13 with a record of 0-2, because ~both~ the 49ers and Bears will have walked all over them on their home field! As for the petty little matter of getting on “your” website (is NFL.com apart of the overrrated pecker domain?), it’s far better sport than trading village people fantasies about puffdoll’s like Matthews with your other homies!…Just the support a Bear fan needs to justify further comments!……Bears Year ahead—-peckers will be lucky to finish 9-7!

  26. By Bears Year Ahead on Jul 30, 2012 | Reply

And the comical claim of “name-calling some of the best players in the NFL”…..oh…booo who! Never said a word about Rodgers, without which the peckers are TOTAL toast. And Woodson, Jennings and Bishop could come lineup for the Bears in a perfect football world. But several of their so-called blue chippers (Finley, Raji, Shields, Williams, Neal, Hawk, Matthews, Burnett and on an on) learned how to read last year just in time to be fooled by all their bloated press clippings! The proof was in the pudding when the Giants rolled into townm but the train had left the station months before when the worst defense in the last 30 years started giving up 600 yards a game!…..Hey….nothing but the best to Rodgers, Woodson (pure class), Jennings, and a couple others, but they’re clearly not going to be enough—get used to it!

Jimmy Joe Starks—could be 4th string on the Bears! Oh, but the Peckers are “loaded!”

No grasp on reality. Your pantywaste bears keep getting SMASHED by the Packers year after year and every year all you got is another worthess team yet you keep talking like they are the resurrected 85 bears. Yeah you keep hanging on to that past wackjob cause thats all the bears got….the past because the future looks like mediocrity for a long time. By the way your best player Urlackluster is OLD! I’ll chirp at all of ya come 9/13……in the meantime, rest assured the Bears aren’t “underestimating” Jimmy Joe Starks from the great football factory of the University of Buffalo! There’s nothing on old Big Mouth’s record to estimate–but don’t take my word for it—go back and look at the tape of Peppers and Urlacher anilhating the moron while his jaw was a-flapping!….They just shoved him out of bounds and then waved him off the same way I’m waving all of you off….as in “yeah, yeah, yeah, go get a face-cast!”

Funny thing about what this bears fan is saying…As crappy as our D was last year, we still stopmed the bears. This year our pass rush will be vastly improved. The bears new wideouts wont get the ball due to cutler being on his back all game. Aaron will have his way with the bears outdated defense again…as usual. Just keep your fingers crossed they dont get blown out.

Bears Years Ahead just quit your embarrassing your self i hear the same thing every year from the teddy bear club” bears havent won a super bowl since 85 which is their only super bowl victory we smashed the bears twice last year in the first game we killed forte with our 32nd ranked defense an before you get all high an mighty about our secondary we led the league in ints and cutler and the other poor excuse of a qb are included in that list of 38 ints besides Cutler will get hurt an forte will crumble under the pressure any way so it doesnt matter that thing you call your o line is horrible

Your pecker nation is even dumber than I thought it was!. Hey look fellas—just mark these words and go back to stroking eachother with puffdoll Matthew’s “goldielocks”: Bears ~will~ walk out of Lambeau on the evening of 9/13 with pecker scalps and a victory, and a likely 2 game divisional lead, as both SF and Chicago have passed your beloved putzes up! Easy fellas….just sayinnnnn! New year comin…February 2011 was an NFL eternity ago. Last call until 9/13—–you can start getting used to the idea now!

Bears Years Ahead, I will say this. I admire your willingness to continue to post and be utterly proven wrong. We were superbowl champs just two years back, went 15-1 last year because of our great offense and our 1st in the league takeaway total. Who cares if our D is 32nd because we gave up a lot of passing yards. Last I checked, the game wasn’t won by getting passing yards, it was by scoring more points than the other team. Only ONE team did that last year… So yeah, our D gave up yardage, but they didn’t give up that yardage when it counted and THAT’S what matters! I don’t know if you know this, but our offense is STILL the best with #12 and our superpower WR core. You can talk all you want about Jones running his mouth (which he may be doing more than necessary, but that’s not the point) we STILL have the likes of Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb who are making plays and beating Defenses. We still have that same offense… So, I don’t see us not scoring points to win games like we did last year and two years ago… As far as the Defense… From 32nd, the only place to go is up, there pal. So get your facts straight and quit hating on the Packers. How many problems does your team have? Because scoring seems to be one of them since you didn’t finish atop the NFC North recently. And keep gabbing about 9/13 because until then, it’s all talk. We’ve got the offensive talent over the Bears and our defense is gonna step it up. So keep talking, we’ll see ya there! GO PACK GO!

  44. By Bears Year Ahead on Aug 1, 2012 | Reply

Well, Studofour, at least you’re not personal about it. All I’ve been writing is about what’s ahead. Yeah, the team you love has had a nice run, but it’s about to end. The die was cast throughout most of the end of last season, and the Giants just came in and finished them off. The Bears have improved a thousand-fold more offensively than the Peckers have improved defensively, and there’s never been any question about their defense or special teams……matter of fact, the Bears defense gets even better with 14 point leads, which is what they’ll be looking at this year!. Rodgers will continue to get his numbers because he’s clearly a great QB, but the team itself won’t be able to keep up. Things change. Should be good……I’ll be shocked if the peckers beat ~either~ SF or Chicago. But you can hope!

  45. By Greenbaystudohfour on Aug 2, 2012 | Reply

Well that’s mature of you. I’ve only known one Bears fan in my life that was civil and did his homework before he bad mouth my team. I will say you have merit in what you say. Every Packers fan will agree that our Defense was absolutely terrible last year and if we were in top form, we could have had a repeat. But! we’re doing something about it.

And about San Fran. Good luck to anyone playing them, Bears included. They are a rising force-to-be-reckoned with and I will say if our D and our run game doesn’t shape up, it will be a hard fought game that rests solely on Rodgers’ shoulders.. But I think the rest of the team knows that, too.

Haven’t heard much about the Bears’ pickups in the offseason other than Marshall-who CAN be covered-but we’ll see. I have much respect for guys like Forte and Knox, because they always play well against us when we stomp them =) but Cutler… Nah lol

Good luck to the Bears cuz they are gonna need it. Pre-seasons only a few days away so we’ll see who’s talking has merit in the end!
