Matthews takes advantage one-on-one
Posted by on September 12, 2012 – 3:25 pmLast Sunday, San Francisco thought LT Joe Staley would be able to handle Packers LB Clay Matthews one-on-one for much of the game, but Matthews made the Niners pay.
He recorded 2 1/2 of the Packers’ four sacks to open 2012 with a multi-sack game, just like he did in 2010. Matthews only had one multi-sack game in 2011, mostly because he faced regular double teams and there wasn’t enough pass rush from elsewhere on defense for the opposing offenses to change their plans.
So, what does that mean against the Bears on Thursday night? Chicago’s offensive line has faced its share of criticism in recent years for protection problems, and they’ve faced Matthews so much it seems unlikely LT J’Marcus Webb would be asked to block Matthews one-on-one very often.
That could mean Matthews’ defensive mates will get their first real test as to how much pass rush they can provide of Matthews is doubled.
“That’s the overall principle of pass rush is that those who have one-on-ones need to win their matchups, because we believe our guys on defense should be able to take advantage of that,” Matthews said on Wednesday. “We were able to do that a few times this last week.
“If that is the case (that double teams are on tap for him), I’m still going to get after the quarterback, and other guys need to do that as well.”
Injury update: RB James Starks’ return to practice on Wednesday was a surprise development, Mike McCarthy said, but obviously a positive one. Starks was a limited participant and is listed as doubtful for Thursday’s game, but he practiced for the first time since developing turf toe in the preseason opener back on Aug. 9.
“That was excellent news this morning,” McCarthy said. “He’s making progress.”
In addition to Starks, WR Greg Jennings (groin) and CB Davon House (shoulder) being doubtful, LB Terrell Manning (concussion) has been ruled out of the game, while LB Jamari Lattimore (ankle) and DE C.J. Wilson (groin) are questionable.

Matthews is a USC phony all jacked up on ‘roids and ego. Fabio is also a scumbag that doesn’t hesitate to try & injure (see bogus play on Alex Smith last Sunday). He’s pulled the same crap against Cutler, coming up from behind and grabbing facemask and anything else he can get his slimey mits on. He should shut his mouth and take a “Class” class, featuring studs like Brian Urlacher who’s headed straight for the Hall of Fame, and has ~never~ played dirty in 13 seasons. Matthews will get what’s coming—just sit back and watch! Bears gonna kick some lame pecker-ass this weekend—puffduck Matthews included!

Clay made clean hit on Smith early in game, and the penalty cost packers the game.

Hey Airheadpacker—-it’s the Peckers that can’t play defense or run the ball….what delusion you suffering from?. Their defense is a joke, and Doghead Benson is a retread that sat on the waiver wire for months! Your overrated GM really blew it…..the league has caught up with the peckers, who put the whole thing on Rodger’s back…..wake up…..he can’t do it without a running game, and certainly can’t pile up enough points to protect a leaky defense. If you can’t see it now, you’ll have no choice but to see it soon!

Funny. I’ve NEVER trolled the Bears’ website before. I’ve never even been to their website. There’s probably a lot more pictures and a lot less big words on there. Pretty sad. And yes, ‘THE BEARS STILL SUCK!’

I expect Walden and Perry will have to prove they can beat their 1-on-1′s, or Clay will see a lot of doubleteams, the rest of the year.
Clay’s hit on Smith wasn’t dirty. He even deliberately and adamantly, extended his arms outward, to illustrate he wasn’t driving the QB in the ground, so he wouldn’t get flagged. Sadly, it didn’t help with the replacement Ref’s.
I know many of the Bears’ fan’s think it’s clever to transform our name Packers into “peckers”. However, simply thinking something, doesn’t make it true. Perhaps to those on a Kindergarten intelligence level. On second thought, that isn’t giving the Kindergartner’s enough credit.
Unfortunately, I think it’s going to be another long night for PackerNation tomorrow, Yet, win or lose, I won’t be over on the Bears site calling them names, or throwing a tantrum like a petulant child.

What is a Bears fan doing posting on our website? What a sorry piece of crap. You tell me you don’t have anything better to do after your HUGE win against hapless Indianapolis? A Colts team in the most infantile stages of rebuilding. A Colts team to which your Monsters of the Midway gave up 360 yards of offense and 22 first downs? You didn’t waddle down Rush Street and light cats on fire and knock over phone booths? I suppose you can afford to talk crap on our website when you’re on pace to win 16 games? Do yourself a favor Genius… go back down to your mother’s basement, pull out that crusty futon you call your bed and go back to sleep until you have won a meaningful game (or two) against teams that aren’t vying for next year’s top draft picks. Right now you are just 1-0, same as Tampa Bay and Arizona. Stupid, fat and drunk is a no way to go through life son… but as a Bears fan we all understand why you do it.

So Matthews gets more sacks. Not a big deal when the Pack is being dominated and loses the game. It almost seems as if Mike and Vic are being told to find feel good stories to write. Coaches, players and maybe even the sports writers do not seem to take any lessons from losing.

The Packers offensive line was not there on Sunday. No holes for a running back to run through, no defense against the run, but good defense against the pass. No pass protection for Aaron Rodgers. Lets go, Pack! Got to do better than that loss 30-22. Replacement refs a joke. There was so much dirty play on behalf of the 49ers. Most of the penalties should have been against the 49ers. Go beat the Bears! You can’t afford to go 0-2 at home in Lambeau. Get the running game going or buy yourself some new hb’s.

Why is the Packer-Bears game being shown on NFL network, instead of letting packers and bears fans not being allowed to see the game on a regular network.

You’re the one that needs to shut his mouth and take a “Class” class bears fan. You’re in OUR house, show some respect. Oh, that’s right. Bears fan don’t know what that is, along with soap and water and another Superbowl win. I bet this guy still has all his 85 bears memorabilia hangin everywhere. Just hold on a little bit longer there, maybe this is their year. HA!! That’s about as likely as Jay Quitter winning a Superbowl. GO PACK GO!!

Wow who has the tenacity to troll a rival team’s website? My cousins are huge Bears fans too and they’ve been bragging about how they beat the Colts. The Colts!! The 49ers are a great team and I don’t think any packers fans disrespect them (besides our pal Randy), and no one thinks they are a bad team.
This game will be different. We know it’s not going to come as easy as last year. I’m excited to watch the Pack dismantle our rivals and walk out of the stadium after handing another loss to the Bears.

Packers and Rodgers show their greatness tonight. Bears don’t stand a chance. Cutler will be lucky to survive the first half. Pack by at least 14.. Go Pack Go….

Fortunately Matthews was the saving grace to last weeks mediocre performance – poor running, poor protection against the run, OL failed to open lanes for Benson. I wasn’t so thrilled with the overall D either and Aaron did throw a horrible pass for an interception but we’ll give him a pass, as it happens so rarely. Hopefully with Walden back we will see serious pressure on Cutler from both sides causing some interceptions and forced fumbles.

I’m probably older thau any 2 or 3 of you guys together( I’m 68). With that said, I remember the good days of Bears-Packers football. Yes it was a heated rivalry between Halas and Lombardi but neither coach would have stepped so low as to what I read on this post. Instead they did their talking on the field, Sometimes they won and sometimes they lost, but there was alwasys respect, and it showed. As a Bear fan I have visited the “Forozen Tundra” many times and was treated with repsect by “Cheeseheads.” Sure we razzed each other but it was in good fun. and when the game was over we had drinks together and tlked about the “next game” (especially the losers who couldn’t wait to get a chance to redeem themselves). I visit this site occasionally to see the latest injury report, and came across this thread.
To me, at least, it looks like there are bunch of kids in a playgorund who are basically saying, ” My dad can beat up your dad!” Don’t you think that you’ve outgrown that? There are wonderful players, no let’s make that great players on both teams who have given us fans a lot of enjoyment (and pain) through the years. Sure we all want our team to win, that’s only natural. Why not enjoy the game and stop this foolish bickering which doesn’t mean a thing. Not now and not after the game. Remember, what goes around comes around. I still remember Lombardi scolding out a player for smiling, actually laughing on the sidelines when the Packers were losing. He was intense and his intensity rubbed on those Packers teams. A far as Halas-he was also no nonsense. Could any you-if your old enough-imagine a player giving Halas any BS (yeah there were a few who did and they didn’t stay around long-even if they were “stars”). I can’t imagine those two men, if they were still around and given the choice, getting involved in this pettiness, or approving of their fans to do the same. Can any of you?

DON’T HATE ON MATTHEWS NONE OF YOU CAN DO WHAT HE’S DOES.ALL OF YOU MADDEN XBOX PLAYERS OR THE ONE’S WHO COULDN’T MAKE IT PASSING JUDGEMENT. Here it is, the day after the win and we don’t hear from BEARS YEAR AHEAD. Whenever someone talk negatively about another person, i.e. BEARS YEAR AHEAD did about Matthews, I’ve always been told they are jealous. However, I’m thinking Clay rejected BYA’s advances and has taken it to the net. Just me writing out loud.

Sal,
You make relevant observations regarding the tone of some posts. Avid fans from around the league are very loyal to their respective teams, and with that sentiment fully etched in their souls they take umbrage with those non-fans who step way beyond “ribbing”. Someone amongst the many posts here asked a very good question…”why are Bear fans on the Packer’s site”? Generally most of the Packer’s fans’ posts dismiss or ignore these misguided individuals and discuss football. Occasionally however there are some instigators that relentlessly flood our blog with such tasteless crap that even the most reserved Packer fans here feel obliged to offer rebuttals. You are obviously not like those folks and I tip my hat to you. To banter back and forth is part of the dance we fans all do and most are careful not to cross the imaginary line of sportsmanship. I suspect most of this useless chatter comes from a more youthful origin sadly void of the merits associated with respect. That said we welcome Bear’s fans on our site like yourself who honor the tradition and rivalry both fan bases have enjoyed for decades.
