Statement from Packers GM Ted Thompson on John Dorsey

Posted by Duke Bobber on January 14, 2013 – 2:33 pm

John Dorsey

“I would like to thank John Dorsey for his 27 years of service to the Green Bay Packers. First as a player, and later as a member of the personnel department, John has been a loyal member of the Packers family and the Green Bay community for more than half of his life. The Chiefs have hired a good man and John has earned this opportunity. We wish John and his family all the best.”

Love the PACK lifetime fan. Before we send D Capers down the road lets get some aggresive df linemen ( not BJ ) Some help on the o line and lets play some ball. All in all were better than the other 26 teams. Thanks for a good year guys GOD BLESS.

    - Fire Capers… The players on this D is better suited for a 4-3 scheme.

    – Keep Jennings. even though hes made it clear he’s moving on to another team, at least franchise him and trade him to at least get a draft pick out of him.

    – Resign Dajuan Harris & Starks & Green. Let Grant & Benson go…

    – Keep Woodson, move him exclusively to Safety.

We need Greg Jennings, sign him he is worth it. He still has alot of good years left, he gave alot to the team. Make Donald Driver a recivers coach,he has alot of knowlage of the differant defence formations in witch he can help the recivers and tightends out.

Hey Ted what’s the answer! Where are the real football players you drafted. The Dynasty team! The draft and development! The coaching staff!
The Packers looked silly out on that field. So what’s the answer Ted!

  16. By Sixtus on Jan 14, 2013 | Reply

Ted, now real football players don’t get hurt! They just don’t! It’s in their DNA. Real football players hit hard and make their tackels for the team! They make the tackle get up and are ready to make the next tackle. Real football players. Ted. I did not see that in this playoff game. In a matter of fact I really have not seen any of that since the Houston Game. Ted need to have a Houston game every week through the Super Bowl! Ted That is an answer!

Bring in someone like a Lovie smith who RECENTLY has been known for GREAT defenses. Cut everyone on the o-line but sitton, bulaga, and evan-smith. Actually sign good free agents, and move up in the first rd to get another game changer on d. Plz.

Will somebody please finally see what I’ve been saying, Ted Thompson isn’t nowhere close to being the agressor that we need. We couldve went for Marshawn Lynch No!, Couldve went for Mario Williams No! Couldve picked Asante Samuels… No! instead we get rid of key players that matter to both our defense and our offense. I say there’s a vote of no confidence in Mr. Thompson. He’s too conservitive while everyone else around us are making major moves and are improving.

    So sick of the disapointments!

here’s a hint, trade TE’s. Finnley for Dallas’s Witten! wont know unless you try, sure it seems impossible but just to know that your actually listening to us the die hard fans who pay your bills, it would mean alot to see that you would actually try the notion and stop trying to develope your own brand of SOFT players who cant stay healthy and yet you bring them back, and for what! So they can get hurt again. Get those players that can deal with alil bruise and will step up to the plate and make it happen.

I noticed NOT A PINDROP about Matthews. I think the team has another season the way they are. Don’t trade anyone, just make them work harder… train, tackle, win. The Packers were hot until we realized (gonna swear here.. cover the ears) Kaepernick floated through and took the season win. NEED BETTER DEFENSIVE COVERAGE.. just a hard one to watch replays on. I’ll agree, if they’re slow, make them coaches, but I still 1000% want to see one more season from them to prove me wrong… I want so badly to see the Lambeau Leap in person… Matthews, Driver, Jennings… want them all there! TRAIN, PACK, TRAIN!!! and then GO FIGHT WIN!!! FROZEN TUNDRA… ROCK ON!

Granted, Newhouse has had his struggles at LT. The truth is Newhouse was never meant to be the starting LT. We still haven’t seen what Sherrod can do.

It doesn’t make sense to use a 1st round draft pick on a Tackle, when we have two 1st round T’s, on the roster. Maybe it’s the Justin Harrell hangover, but it’s way too early to just give up on Sherrod and label him a bust. We all need to see him on the field. That includes the Coaching Staff and upper management.

(sigh) I just finished reading all of the comments above and cannot believe how ignorant most of you are. Resigning Jennings? That doesn’t make a lot of sense especially with the limited cap space. Oh, and by the way, Rodgers hasn’t gotten his new contract yet. That is gonna be a big one. So, we sign Jennings, Rodgers and Matthews..and guess what, That’s the cap. You gotta let him go. And as far as Woodson and Driver are concerned, you act as if they have no other options but to stay in GB as a player or a coach…Some of these comments make me smile. “Fire Dom, Fire Mike, Fire Ted!” How would you like to be the Browns, Jaguars, or Lions? You don’t clean house because of a bad playoff game. Those teams hardly ever make it to the dance, let alone expect to win. Count yourselves fortunate to be a GB fan.

I agree with Rob a lot of overreaction. Were talking about a head coach gm and defensive coordinator who have taken this team to the playoffs consistently and won a superbowl within the last 3 years. That’s a lot more success than most franchises can boast not to add we have completely steamrolled through the North the past few years. As for Jennings the only way we can afford to keep him is if he plays for less money which looks unlikely and we have a deep enough core to afford losing him.

  38. By Mr Big on Jan 15, 2013 | Reply

I’ve never been the type of fan that wants to fire the coaches when there is a disappointing result, but the complete lack by the defense of being prepared for Kaepernick is very frustrating. “I didn’t realize he was that fast?” Please…

Dom Capers has one of the most talented defenses in the league, but they don’t stop anybody. We need a new DC, and we either need a new OC, or McCarthy needs to let Clements call the plays.

    Go Packers!

  39. By Mr Big on Jan 15, 2013 | Reply

You’re probably right…but they were definitely not prepared for San Fancisco at all. That falls on the DC’s shoulders.

Thanks for the services John, greatly appreciated. You folks are all wasting your “breath” or more importantly, you finger muscles. This team will not change. As for going to the playoffs? Who the heck cares? Lombardi would laugh at this club. We are clearly talented, but we’ve LOST 3 of the last 4 years. There’s your trend. We got hot and won a Super Bowl. Nice to see Rodgers will get one ring. I don’t think he sees another. Way too many egos and stubborn thinkers in this organization. Nothing will change…they won’t lose Capers, who clearly has no clue on stopping the modern-day QB. And then McCarthy? No clue on USING a modern day QB. But in defense, if he’s injured, we’re a 3-13 team.

@Mason Smith, I agree that losing 3 of the last 4 playoff runs is obviously not good if you are only satisfied with a Super Bowl win. But, on the other hand, the average fan realizes that there are 32 teams all striving for something only 1 team can have. Most of us are just happy to have some exciting football to watch and enjoy in January. Sure a super bowl win would be nice but so would a lot of other frequently unattainable things. By the way, don’t be so sure what people in the past would do or say now. Just look at Belichick. He was an defensive guru that changed with the game and became an offensive mastermind. And that only happened over the past 15 years or so.

I’m a long time Packers fan who lives in Chicago. Hire Lovie?? You got to be kidding. Ask a Chicago Bears fan about Lovie and they will tell you most of them were rooting for the Bears to lose the last game so they would “Fire” Lovie. He has done little to make the Bears a decent team. He let the team get old, is a poor drafter, babied Cutler so he doesn’t play unless he gets his way & still doesn’t win.

KEEP Capers. Defense went from dead last to 11th… And he’s the best defensive coordinator I’ve ever watched. He can scheme better than anyone. Just curious how many “hard core fans” seem to think immediate and drastic changes are required. Well, news flash, a car accident is a sudden and drastic change in position, but I don’t here any of you hoping your in one of those. Let Ted Thompson and Coach McCarthy do their jobs. I for one am very thankful for what we have here in Green Bay.

  57. By Chad on Jan 15, 2013 | Reply

Who are we going to draft? Woodson makes 10 mil per year so maybe if we get rid of him we can keep Jennings. Thompson acquired Rodgers, Woodson, Matthews and WR but hasn’t been that good on other picks like Raji and Hawk, they just aren’t that good and they make a lot of money and weren’t worth their picks. Our team really isn’t that good aside from Rodgers. Why are the Patriots so good every year? What are their secrets? Can’t we analyze them? I don’t know who we are going to draft, it seems like our only need is C and S, we either have young guys or expensive starters at every other position. I would rather have Jennings than Woodson. Pickett isn’t very good either we could cut him. Pickett and Woodson just show that free agents don’t do well at the end of their deals, it’s better to draft and develop.

We are not winning the Superbowl next year unless Sherrod and Perry play very well–I doubt that will happen. I’d say were a couple years away from winning a superbowl, Montana spent years between winning his superbowls and so did the steelers and giants of recent history.

Good call everyone on firing Capers…Can you make a bigger mistake with one of, if not the best defensive mind to ever be apart of the game?! Going from dead last in the league to 11th is damn impressive. Plus, he lost 2 middle backers early in the year that were way better than Brad Jones at middle LB. Can’t be easy to use a outside LB at Middle LB. He developed young players so quickly to become as good as they were. Let him get more time and more player in. Plus, he lost Worthy at the end. Dont think that hurt vs the run? Get real and calm down, McCarthy and Capers, you cant get better and a personel more driven to winning. Players, Not Plays!

Not sure if it’s time to fire Capers. Remember we did win a Superbowl with him and wanted him to be our Defensive coordinator for the next 20 years. We have also done some drafting specifically geared to a 3-4 defense. Careful what you wish for. As for Lovie, he did take his team to the Superbowl but I think he is a much better coordinator than head coach. He could be an option if we seriously think Capers has forgotten how to coach. So many plays had the defense in the right place and forgot how to tackle.

We need to teach the basics of how to tackle. Hitting these huskies nowadays at the hips or above is almost useless. Lets see everyone try to learn that if you cream their legs they come down like a ton of bricks. I love the Pack and we are fortunate to have the coaches that we do. I think Woodson should hold a tackling camp and share his expertise.

    Hey Ted:

How about the Pack going out and getting a real
Defensive Coordinator and firing Dom Capers. He
is an over-the-hill Defensive Coach. I coached
“D” for over 8 years, so I think I have enough
experience to call for his dismissal.

Against the 49’ers, the Packer “D” naver showed-up
    for the game, giving-up 579 offensive yards,setting
a record that will never be broken by any team in-
the-future; and if some future “D” coordinators
team did give up that kind of yardage, he would be
    fired before the day ended.

You, using the excuse, he had many injuries to
contend with says, then, you should fired for not
supplying him with good back-up personell.

C’ on man, let’s get a decent Pack “D” once again
and win another ” Super Bowl”.

Congrats John wish you and your family the best. We need a new training staff. We cant keep any body on the field. Everyone keeps saying our secondary cant tackle, They’re not supposed to. If our secondary is always forced to tackle that means we already lost on that play. Our biggest weaknesses are: O-Line (weak players and zone blocking dont mix) D-Line (poor technique, cant occupy blockers and keep them off the linebackers. Cant wait to see Bishop, Smith, and Perry all on the field at once. GoPackGo!!!

Can’t stand to see the replays – the coaching staff and o & d lines need to be overhauled – “almost” making it just isn’t good enough with the talented players we have. Make the hard choices and get rid of the slackers.

Two years ago I will bet most of you were saying Dom Capers was a defensive genius; how soon we forget!! I am not saying I am not disappointed with the season either, but from what I saw it wasn’t all coaching. Injuries, execution, young players and players that did not get to play together alot were big factors as well. What I am saying is that the majority of you sound like spoiled little kids who cry every time they don’t get what they want. I am sure the entire organization from top to bottom will address the issues like the professionals they are, not the whiny little @*$&^%@ that I see writing the comments that they are.

For some reason, my latest comments were not posted:

Well the summary is: Mr. Thompson is not drafting
talented enough players to help Dom Capers when
starters are injured::: so, fire Mr. Thompson, not
    Dom Capers

Jerry Kramer called. He wants to get some reps in. He just might make the starting lineup!!

I think what we need the most is just a better training staff. I mean does anybody hit the weights anymore? Also maybe if the nutritonists served the players “dog food” instead of fillet mignon it would piss our big guys off enough to go harder.

Capers was great when the Pack won the SB in 2010. Why call for his head 2 years later? It all comes down to players playing. He coaches what Ted Thompson gives him. Get a grip.

@ Lostdong yeah he was great in 2010 but doesn’t explain the fact that 2011 we where the last ranked overall defense in the league.. and on 2012 we gave up over 400 yards of rushing to AP.. and over 500 yards in the freaking playoffs to SF…. you can blame it on players too but still it comes down to the Defensive Coordinator and right now he is not doing a great job..
