Packers to wear third jersey and gold helmet vs. Browns

Posted by Duke Bobber on October 17, 2013 – 9:49 am

The Green Bay Packers will wear the team’s third jersey, a re-creation of the historic 1929 uniform worn by the franchise’s first NFL championship team, during Sunday’s Packers-Cleveland game.

Due to new NFL helmet guidelines, the team this year will utilize its regular gold helmet without the logo and stripes. A similar helmet arrangement was used by the Packers during NFL “throwback” games in 1994 and 2001.

I like the history and traditions of the NFL but please stop using throwback uniforms. They are in the past for good reasons.

Don’t like it, period!!! The fear of playing the Packers is lost wearing a dirty brown uniform. I wear Green and Gold every day. And proud to be 50 year fan. Go Pack Go !! Coach C

Aaron once said that the blue & tan unis were the most comfortable — that the tan pants were the most comfortable uniform pants he’d ever worn. If being more comfortable takes them into the end zone more … bring on the throwbacks!

    Amen, Florida!

I like our throwback uniforms (they aren’t “dirty brown”). They’re a lot better than those the Steelers wore a couple of years ago. They reminded me of a bunch of giant bumblebees!

These uniforms are my absolute favorite! I can’t understand why so many dislike them. They are ugly in a manner of speaking, but I think the ugliness is a bit of their charm.

I love the change of pace. I just wish we could use the same brown helmets as last year!

    Hate the OLD Throwback uniforms.
Never liked them and never will.

Perfect game to bring back Donald Driver, last time they wore these he had one of the greastest catch and run touchdown I have ever seen.

Love the throwbacks!! I’ll miss the brown helmets, but these should be cool too!

It’s apparent the fans do not like the throwbacks and count me in that number. Just quit it, it’s a marketing scheme anyway, just quit it!

Good move by making the helmets gold instead of brown.

They didn’t choose to use the gold helmets, they are required to by NFL rules..but I do love these uniforms. Wisconsin (myself included) fans love the retro Brewer uniforms but hate on the Packer retro jersey..not cool guys

Love the throwbacks, but if they keep the green face masks on the helmets it’s going to look terrible!!! I know they are required to use the same helmets they wear for every other game, but that shouldn’t mean they can’t change the face masks.

NO! Please stop with the throwback uniforms. I want to see my Packers in the traditional Green and Gold.

  17. By NHPack on Oct 17, 2013 | Reply

I liked the throwbacks when they were used on Thanksgiving, a day already full of tradition and memories. Now they are just worn randomly by all the teams. The only reason I can figure is so that the NFL can sell more jerseys. Shame on the NFL. Why is everything about making money. Can’t they do something just for the fans. Like the owners and players taking a pay cut so that they can lower ticket prices during a bad economy. Or even better, actually issuing an apology to the fans for the mess that was created when they locked out the refs.

I have been a Packer fan for over 50 years and I hate the blue uniforms. If they are going to use a throw back uniform use the 1960’s style green and gold.

I love these throwback uniforms. They SCREAM football history. These ones go beyond the packers. These go back to the early years of football, where players wore leather helmets and only thick padded shirts instead of huge pads. This was backyard smash mouth tackle football being born. to any of you who don’t appreciate this homage to footballs past.. I don’t believe you are a true fan of this storied franchise, who’s so deeply entrenched in the rich history of the National Football League.

I dig the Curly Lambeau era throwbacks. The Packers have the greatest heritage of all NFL teams and this is a great way to showcase our history. I wish they would offer Lombardi era throwbacks as well.

I love the throwbacks….very few teams can boast their history and NO TEAM can honor as much success as we have had…..This is absolutely the greatest honor we can give to our past while making sure football fans across the world know the Packers are the greatest footbal organization in the NFL

I was PISSD when Holmgren tried to bring back the blue and gold the ORIGINAL Packers colors and was shot down by a bunch of midwestern hicks procliaming “Those are the clors from our hey day!” when they are to damn idiotic to realize that Blue and gold were the Packers traditional colors.

I think the gold helmet looks much better than brown. I would like to see a variation of the gold circle on the front, or just numbers just like the back.
What about those alternate Nike Black jerseys?
I think those would be a nice look.

I like the throwbacks, it is history and reminds younger fans that there was a better time when football players were tuff. I like history to know where we as a country were/came from. Throw backs give fans a chance to remember the days before commercialization.

  27. By Brandon on Oct 18, 2013 | Reply

I get the overall reason for the throwback, but the small numbers on the jerseys are more hard to read and the colors aren’t so much as good Green and Gold the colors Green Bay has claimed. But it is I love the Green Bay tradition and the most succsessful football in all of history, through Lombardi. Go Pack Go!

  28. By Brandon on Oct 18, 2013 | Reply

I do think it would be quite different with the Yellow helmets instead of Gold. It’ll be interesting

  29. By Joshua on Oct 18, 2013 | Reply

Why can’t they wear the brown helmets? It was created to simulate the old brown leather helmets from back then.

What is the obsession with the “I’ve been a packer fan for 50 years, stop with the throwback uniforms”? The amount of time you have been a packer fan has nothing to do with your loyalty or your taste in uniforms. If you don’t like them, post once and move on. This sounds like one person posting multiple times for some reason.

I like the throwbacks. But I’m prefer them to be used very sparingly to keep the uniqueness. Similarly, I like Monday night football, but I do not like Thursday night football. It’s watering down the special feel of games outside of Sunday afternoons.

Stop it with the ugly throwback uniforms. Instead, let’s get the NFL to accept new unicorn designs for a game or two throughout the season. College football has been very successful with special game uniform selections.

The throwbacks are great uniforms! I would like to see them worn more often because they are a great design. They are not like the sensory overload swirling stripes that run all over uniforms today. That just looks like someone went nuts with a calligraphy pen. Whats worse is the helmet logo of the Patriots and Panthers. They look like “Doriito Chips” with faces in them.
The Packers wore blue and gold about as long as the Buccaneers and Seahawks have been around.

I think the reason some fans will state they’ve bled Green-and-Gold for 50 years is to emphasize that they suffered thru’ the early ’70s (minus the ’72 season), ALL-THRU’-’80s and the first part of the 90s and STILL remained Packer-backers!!!
That’s a very long stretch of high hopes followed by heartbreaking disappointment! Recent Packer fans have NO idea what 8 to 10 long Sundays during the fall can affect a persons outlook on life! LOL
To be a true fan of a team is to root for them during the hard times as well as the good/great times… and Lambeau’s waiting list (in the tens of thousands!) for season tickets as well as the record sell-outs proves that Green Bay has one of the BEST fans in sports!!!
Packers fan since 1972 and hoping to get an autograph and picture from Ken Ellis (#48) one day soon! :)
I prefer the green and gold jerseys, but don’t mind the throwbacks once in awhile as long as we come out with a big fat W for the game.

    Go Pack Go!

“Teams may continue to wear throwback uniforms under league guidelines, but players must wear their regular helmets,” league spokesman McCarthy is quoted as saying. “The outside of the helmet can be modified by removing or replacing decals, as long as it does not affect the integrity of the helmet.”

We are watching the game right now, and it looks like most of the Packers have peed their pants — the back of their light brown pants are wet — not a good color for sitting on a wet bench, or playing on a wet field.

I like the uniform, but only for a change up. The Pack is Gold and Green. The uniform does look comfortable, though. Blue and Tan always looks good together.

And a shout out to Detroit and Chicago…YAY! Back in the rightful #1 spot that we belong in.

Count me in with LOVING these uniforms. I also think they’re a great tribute to team history, worn by their first NFL champions.

Perhaps green-wearing fans are simply, and nearsightedly, resistant to change. Honor the past while you move into the future. What’s so wrong with that?

What is going on? These so called throw-back uniforms are disgustingly ugly. Certainly not as distinctive as the green and gold which was unique! Now the uniforms look blah like the other NFL team changes. Money wasted.
