Packers-49ers most-watched Wild Card game all-time

Posted by Mike Spofford on January 6, 2014 – 5:05 pm

Sunday’s Packers-49ers NFC Wild Card playoff game drew 47.1 million TV viewers, making it the most-watched Wild Card game on record, according to a press release issued by the NFL.

It topped the previous Wild Card leader — the 2011 AFC matchup between the Steelers and Broncos — by nearly 5 million viewers (42.4 million). Previously No. 2 on the list and now No. 3 was Packers-Eagles in 2010 (39.3 million).

13% higher than the previous record? Are you kidding me? That’s the power of Lambeau, the Packers, and a rivalry.

This little factoid that this was the highest watch game proves that the Packers have a World Wide following and television audience that the sports broadcasting media needs to really pay attention to. Go Pack Go!

Brian P: BULL. I’m a Niner fan in the UK wo attended both NFL Wembley UK games this season. UK fans where there respective team jerseys. 85-90 per cent of the crowd come from Britain with the rest of Europe making around 7 per cent and the rest of the world the remiaining 3 per cent.

In the first game (Steelers-Vikings) I can only remember seeing a few Packers jerseys..one of the lowest supported teams along with the Falcons, Lions, Panthers etc.

In the second game (Niners-Jaguars) I and around 70 per cent of the fans wore our Niner jerseys. The Niners have a HUGE following in the UK and around Europe.

This probably means the extra millions were made up from foreign Niner fans (not Packers fans!!) of which there are millions in Europe and around the world.

Try again mate. Oh and, if you don’t believe me, look it up on Youtube to see how the Niners dominated Wembley in numbers.

    Cheerio. NINERS WIN!

Just based on your own info, the Niners jerseys showed up because the NINERS WERE PLAYING. The PACKERS WEREN’T. Try doing a legitimate comparative count when they Packers actually play in the game…… Packer fans usually attend Packer games.

Second – 2 of the top 3 wild card ratings of all time include the Packers not the Niners, there is only one consistency there, just the facts.

I was in tears after the game. I hope the players and coaches were just as upset and can turn their pain into motivation for next season.

The numbers for watching were up because of all the hype about a black out. Packer Nation wanted to show the NFL what they would have missed by blacking out that game. I still feel that black out rule is out dated and needs to be done away with .America’s Team prevails, Packer fan rule !

the niners beat the packers healthiest defense, not their best defenders. Our guys did tremendous with who was left.Nobody choked & no one player can be blamed for losing the game. IT WAS ONLY BY 3!!! Not a blow out. The football Gods can be fickle . If you want to throw blame look at the tackling coach. Our team fought adversity & did great. Twist of fate could have been a win. Still the best game of the playoffs

I like all the people trying ot turn the loss into something noble or positive. Face it once again Green Bay was put on the big stage and blew it, just like the last three years, (2011, 2012, 2013).

Maybe they can turn it around? What will people say next year when they lose a playoff home game again?

  16. By mathew cottrell on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

Learn what choke means. That 4th and 2 Rodgers completed to Randall Cobb when.he escaped the grasp of two defenders is a play NO other player in the NFL can make, if anything Rodgers was the only reason we were even in this game and didn’t get blown out. Imagine the score with matt Flynn.at qb

I absolutely love the packers but colts vs chief’s will go down as best game of this year’s playoffs without a doubt

  18. By mathew cottrell on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

We’ve only lost a home playoff game 2 of the past 3 year’s. The loss to the 9.ers in 2012 was in san fran. And last I checked the packers have still wo..a superbowl more recently than san fran and still.have 13 NFL championships….4 more than any other team.incase your wondering. The packers are a good defense away from a.championship caliber team. Before Rodgers.got hurt their offense was ranked second only to denver

The Packers lost again to the 49ers. This is as digusting as getting whipped by the Giants. Some new things are needed in Greenbay to get this team winning the big games and it starts with coaching. If Capers is still there next season you can expect the same D with no improvement. Also if the Packers don’t buy some quality veterans players and get of the home grown kick again no improvement. Wakeup

I AM 49ER FAN FROM RUSSIA!! Packers suck egg through the tube of rodgers and lose still. YOU SUCK.

    PUCK FACKERS!!

  22. By Green Tide on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

That is a lot of hate for someone who is supposedly a fan of the winning team. Are all people in Russia so dismal?

Suck? Not sure if a playoff team would qualify for that measure, but maybe your using the metric system. Either way try to stay warm, it will help you a lot.

  23. By Gman on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

NO suprise on it being the most watched ever. The Packers are truly America’s team!

  24. By Packsux on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

Not to mention that if you live in the UK but have not truly claimed a team as your favorite. Who’s jersey do you think most people would run out and purchase? S.F.’s or Jacksonville’s.

if niner fans hate the packers so much why you taking time to vist our web site hmmmmm

  26. By Packsux on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

I’m afraid you have explain that. I don’t understand people who trash talk in a foreign language. The people you are talking to, or this case typing, need to get what you are saying for it to really matter. Go drink another bottle of wodka or as we like to call it, vodka.

  27. By Packsux on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

Have you ever seen anything that would make you believe that the people of Russia have anything to be happy about

  28. By dean on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

what i asked was is why do niner fans or who call themselves niners fans take the time to vist a green bay packers website…. besides ur team won no need to runb our faces in it or take to extremes

  29. By Packsux on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

Living amongst Niner fans is hit or miss. The older fans are fine. It’s the younger ones that just have to be pricks cuz it makes them feel better

  30. By Packsux on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

Their fan base is slowly looking like the Raiders fan base. I know Niner fans who won’t go to their own home games because of the way certain groups of other fans act.

  31. By dean on Jan 7, 2014 | Reply

dude some raider fans anit as bad as some of the younger niner fans

what i find funny is when the pull the we have won 5 super bowls of course packers fans can say 13 nfl championships and 9er fans say that dont count its like excuse me its in the recerd books it most mean something

  36. By Thomas on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

Is it a coincidence that the Pack is one of the teams in 2 of 3 highest rated wild card games? I think not.

  37. By Packsux on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

Thats always irritated me too. You don’t hear fans of the Lions Vikings Browns etc saying Super Bowls don’t count just b cuz their team doesn’t have one. That’s basically what it boils down to.
