GREEN BAY–Mike McCarthy was asked directly if Dom Capers will be retained as the Packers’ defensive coordinator in 2014.

“I’m not looking to make big changes. I think Dom Capers is an outstanding football coach and I’m glad he’s on our staff,” McCarthy said on Wednesday during his season-ending press conference.

“Very challenging season for us. We have a lot of work to do. We’re in day three of our evaluation process. We’ll do everything we need to do as we push forward to next season,” McCarthy added.

“I was really impressed with our young players, just the way they’ve grown. It gives us a chance to get better and we will get better.”

Dom Capers needs to go. More of the “old school” Packer Defense status quo will not due for next season. 3 man rush, DBs soft coverage, etc. needs to be replaced and improved!

Time for a change to a new more modern defensive coordinator. 2014 is an opportunity for a fresh start with taking a hard look at both the defensive coaching staff and players. An upgrade in both is needed!

I’m sorry, but Dom Capers has had three seasons now to straighten his defense out, and he’s not doing it. Every off-season, the Dom Capers apologists come out and think of some excuse for him.

2011 – “What’s going on? It must be because Nick Collins and Cullen Jenkins left. It messed everything up.”

2012 – “Well, they were caught off guard by the read option.”

2013 – “There were tons of injuries!!!” That explains why Colin Kaepernick torched the defense for over 400 yards in game one?

There needs to be a change. Look at the Saints for instance. They had a terrible defense last season, and this year, Buddy Ryan came in and now they have a top 10 defense.

WITH ALL THE INJURIES WE HAD DOM CAPERS DID A GOOD JOB PLUGING IN OUR BACK-UPS.. EVEN SOME OF THEM WENT DOWN W/ INJUIES… SO DON’T BLAME HIM HE IS A VERYCAPABLE COACH, HIS PAST PROVES IT.

Was really hoping for for some coaching changes. having to continously count on the offense to win games is not the team concept. We need more defense and it starts with the coaches

uh oh Steve and Pack1 are going to cry all off season “Fire Capers”. I love that MM stands up for his guys and takes the blame. Pack fans don’t get sucked in to the negativity, never to high never to low.

I don’t think Capers is the problem. I think the biggest problem with this team is all the injuries they seem to keep having every year. What the heck is going on there?

It is also sad the Packers “owner” if you will (I know publicly owned) doesn’t feel the need to make trades or spend money for players when all these injuries occur and knowing they will be out long term.

    Keep Dom.
He’s definitely had his issues but over all, he’s done a great job, especially when you consider the injuries he’s had to deal with to his defensive corps over the last 3 or 4 years.

  11. By Cory on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

Mike K. what is your explanation for the terrible defense in 2011 and 2012? Sure, they were ranked 11th last year, but that doesn’t mean squat considering they were torch for over 500 yards in the post season.

He needs to go. Quit thinking of excuses for him.

  12. By Mr. Magoo on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

Saints had no head coach and they couldn’t run Ryan out of Dallas fast enough

Dom Capers can not be blamed for the lack of ability of some players, he is a very good coach and teacher and I think personally he should be retained, but he should also give way to new idea’s presented to him.

I’m sick and tired of the “We will get better” and “Our young guys battled responses. Its time for Dom or Ted Thompson because if its not Dom’s fault then it’s personnel. And thats Ted. He speaks about accountability then practice what you preach. Our defense has been horrible for a long time, being young has nothing to do with it, other teams have young players that excell. If there is no change, this is what we will get. If we dont score over 30 pts we lose… UNACCEPTABLE

It could have easily been the Forty Niners by a much bigger score. credit goes to capers and his staff. What the packers need are more players on Defense, especially DEFENSIVE BACKS, and some HEALTHY BODIES, AS WELL AS DEPTH !!!!!! I am glad McCarthy is keeping capers. WE NEED A BIG DRAFT, if we are to return to the SB !!!!!!!!!!

It’s not Capers that needs to be looked at, it is the strength and conditioning coaches. While many injuries are unavoidable, the teams of late seem to be fragile. If we could avoid being one of the most injured teams out there, we would also be one of the top teams out there. Just my $.02

This argument could go back to the old question of players vs. system. I think we have very capable talent, but the system needs to be learned. All we ever hear about is the offense in offseason OTA’s, I’m sure the defensive players and staff are working just as hard. It’ll pay off sooner than later.

I would rather know(knowing MM will go down with the ship b4 firing DC)why MM never tries Lacy and Starks in the same backfield. Could be the second coming of Taylor and Hornung. The upside of this is endless.

  47. By Scott on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

It’s a matter of scheme coupled with the right personnel. Capers’ scheme is based off of multiple blitzing options from the linebacker corps to create pressure and opportunities for the secondary. We only have two decent linebackers in Matthews and Hawk. Converting the college 4-3 DE into a 3-4 OLB hasn’t worked at all. Aaron Kampman was an amazing 4-3 DE and a less than mediocre 3-4 OLB. Perry and Neal were flops in the transition. TT’s tendency to avoid the big names or even well-known names in free agency mean that we’re getting that backfill from the draft. It’s time to draft 3-4 OLBs that have been in 3-4 systems.

Also the safety play has been atrocious. Burnett is a natural SS, not a FS. Collins’ loss has impacted the Packers secondary tremendously. We need to either spend the money we’ll save from not signing Raji and Finley to get a Jarius Byrd / TJ Ward type or spend our 1st round pick on a FS.

Sorry can’t blame Dom… not this season anyway. I hate the injury excuse, but when it’s to the extent it was this season, I can’t pin it all on him. There are too many contributing factors to this defense. Ted needs to share some of the blame for this defense’s inadequacies, not drafting with the 3-4 defense in mind, trying to turn too many out of position players into linebackers, & most importantly not going out & getting a veteran leader for the defense. Since the re-birth of the Pack, we’ve had a standout veteran who could lead the defense on the field, for instance Woodson, now, who’s the veteran leader? There isn’t one, & Ted needs to find him. I like what he’s done, but his stubbornness in free agent signings is his downfall. Briggs is out there, & I’m not saying break the bank for him, but there are plenty of good veterans out there that can be had with Ted’s miser mentality.

Without any major changes the Packers will be a one and done team. It’s obvious that after 3 years the fans are tired of hearing the same excuses. Here are my observations:

    1. Ted Thompson needs to stop the perpetually young and cheap approach to football and bring in some veterans.

    2. Dom Capers defenses can no longer contain offenses like San Francisco, Seattle, New Orleans, Denver, and New England. The Packers need a new Defensive Coordinator who is keeping up with the changes in today’s offenses.

    3. Mike McCarthy is a good coach, but it’s obvious that when it comes down to the wire more times than not he does not call the right plays. He either needs to correct this or the Packers consider a new coach.

    4. It seems to me that Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy, Dom Capers, and Mark Murphy are untouchable in the sense that as long as the Packers make the playoffs they’re jobs are safe. They don’t have to make any changes because they are the ones who control the team. I’d like to know why?

I don’t think it’s outrageous for fans to ask viable questions, the problem is that Packer management won’t answer or will deflect. Why?

  67. By Tim on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

Sounds to me like he’s gone. McCarthy did not answer like a coach normally would if he had no plans to change coordinators. You have to parse his answer, but the coach did not say he’d be back and that’s what you would expect a head coach to say to that question.

Is kind of hard not to look at the possibilities of replacing Dom Campers. We need to get better on D if we want to win a SB. I Do agree how ever that GB strength and conditioning coaches need a hard look at as well. Also need to practice how to tackle properly. Soooooooo many missed tackles on both special teams and defense this year I lost count after game 1.

Its not just Capers that needs to go, its the 3-4 defense that hasnt worked in 4 years becaue we never have enough linebackers left at the end of the season to run a 3-4. Also you cant keep letting veteran players go and expect rookies to fill in. Letting people like Woodson, Jenkins, Wells just to name a few. Every once in a while you have to spend some money to keep vereran players.Ted Thompson needs to go as well he has had more than enough time to be more consistent with his decision making. Packer fan since 1961.

A lot of comments made here look like Dan Snyder posted them here himself.

The Packers held the 49ers to 23 points in a playoff game with a defense held together with baling wire and duct tape. If Hyde holds on to the interception, or Bush maintains containment on Kaepernick as Capers called the defense, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

If the Packer offense had made just 1 more play and scored a TD on their final possession we wouldn’t be discussing Capers. Would we?

A lot of you wannabe GMs think Kevin Greene is the answer. Your Mensa Card is in the mail.

Used to blame Dom but no more. We had injured players in the secondary who could not only not cover, but also could not tackle. For sure this past weekend. Ted has failed in the majority of his recent first round picks. These picks have to prove to be impact players. This drafting a college D line to be a OLB continues to fail. Efforts at drafting O-line in the first round has also been less then successful. Start drafting safety’s and corners who can man-up against big wide outs. Use FA to solve our OLB and O-line problems. Ted, Mike and the whole staff have kept this team respectable for a lot of years and in these days of salary cap that is tough to do. But we have to see the pack win it again in the next 4/6 years.

  73. By Casey on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

Dom Capers should stay. All year long our players were in the position to make plays, but those plays were not made. Missed tackles, dropped interceptions, and indiscipline killed us…not the scheme. The defense doesn’t have enough play makers. Our safeties had 0 interceptions this year. They lack instincts and ball skills. We haven’t signed a free agent on defense since Charles Woodson. I think that changes this year.

Here’s the thing with injuries – Capers job has been bailed out time and time again due to “Late Season Injuries” The reality is – the problem is with schemes, play calling and adjusting to what your talent can accomplish. Just as the offense had to adjust the play calling to back-up quarterbacks, the defense needs to adjust to the talent on the filed, and they just can’t be that flexible under capers. Look around the league and tell me how many 3-4 defenses are in the top 10? Lastly – Let’s look at the nature of the injuries sustained late season – Seems to be a conditioning issue which is not necessarily Capers fault. But, I think we have tried the Dom Capers experiment long enough. Time for a change!

  78. By SDM on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

I’m thinking its time for Thompson, McCarthy AND Capers to go. Their system produces just above average results at best, and I think they won a Super Bowl despite their system. We need to have a team with more veteran leadership to compliment that of Rodgers and Matthews. This idea of letting them teach the ropes to rookies and young players just isn’t cutting it anymore. I think the lost of Woodsen was huge this year. Maybe not his physical abilities, but his veteran smarts and leadership.

I’ve also been saying this all year! Why don’t we play Rogers, Lacy, Starks in the same back field. With Cobb and Nelson as receivers. Who is the D going to cover? Starks needs to improve on his blocking but all in all….I’m shocked we didn’t see more of this deadly combo.

We need new blood, younger blood to fill Caper’s position. PERIOD. We need someone who can relate to these new, young players which is something I don’t think Capers has accomplished or is effective in doing. They play a different style football than Dom’s era. Capers is not the ONLY person who can fill this position. Cut the ties. He needs to go nice guy and all. Footnote: I would dare and give an ultimatum to all the heavyweights on the Defensive Line to lose 20# of their blubber over the post season and put it into strength training and muscle. If they can’t be athletic and tackle and be a defensive threat, they need to go too.

We need some veterans. Upgrade our safeties on the free agent market, please! We can’t continue drafting young players and expect them to mesh into the defense right off the bat. Our safeties gave up way too many big plays this season. We need to upgrade at middle linebacker also, fast players that can shed blocks and are sure tacklers. Our DB’s are deep. Maybe continue to increase our depth at D-line also.

I WATCH OTHER TEAMS WHO HAVE LESS TALENT THAN OUR PACKERS, BUT THEY SEEM TO BE ABLE TO SACK QB’S AT WILL AND SO ON…..WOULD LOVE TO SEE KEVIN GREENE PROMOTED OR EVEN TRY AND TALK A FORMER HEAD COACH LIKE JOHN GRUDEN TO COME TO GREEN BAY…..DON’T WAIT MAKE THE CHANGE!

Seems like a lot of people want Ted to spend loads of cash on free agents, maybe you all are forgetting that he has less cash to work with than he did in 2010 after locking up Rodgers. After the new collective bargaining agreement, drafting rookies got even cheaper relative to signing veteran free agents (who are more likely to lose a step than gain one). It makes even more sense to develop young guys than it did during the Super Bowl run. It just needs some patience and continuity

Capers’ “insert NDFA” defensive scheme worked pretty good. We got to the playoffs without our star QB and then we lose to a very good 49ers team with guys that wouldn’t make Jacksonville’s starting Defense. I’d say that Coach Capers has done an outstanding job. I saw a Packers defense being held together with duct tape keep an offense with Colin Kaepernick, Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Anquon Boldin, and Frank Gore to 23 pts. Like Rodgers said ( to paraphrase) our offense didn’t put up enough points.

The last time green bay had a good defense was in 2010 because of the key injuries to players since then the only players on defense that haven’t reall been hurt to bad have been raji and hawk. I am not blaming the coaching staff for not blizting as mch as i am saying they don’t have the personel to do it so they have to play conservative. I believe a new fitness regiment needs to be adopted to try to limit injuries a little more. I also believe green bay needs to look at aquiring a new safety or move myca hyde to safety next year to help burrnet out. I think bush should be a special teams guy only he was made for it. People are saying fire capers. He can’t be judged for his actions without a healthy defense. He hasn’t had one in Three years

If he would build leadership on the defense, maybe there would be hope.

He is resting on his laurels. MM has the next-man-up philosophy, but Capers doesn’t…well, maybe he does, but he doesn’t know how to teach the young guys to be effective.

Back to basics. Hit the receiver in the 5 yard box. Tackle (I understand about the whole no-touching rule in practice). Lead. Communicate.

Stop, Start & Continue. Stop praising how great the other team’s offense is. Start being physical in the proper techniques. Continue to allow the ones that have picked up leadership, to be leaders.

Guys like brady popingaka and brandon chillar came in as back ups and kicked but helping make that good defense. And the next year popingka and chillar were cut, which was bull. This is clearly a personnel issue. TT has missed on way too many high round picks. No scheme is going to work when there is such a lack of talent in it. So, unless TT gets his head out of his behind and visits FA as well as have a solid draft, this group is going to be the bottom of the barrel again next season under Dom. It just will not work with so many mediocre players on defense.

Having a bunch of rookies on defense is crushing the Packers. While the youth of the team might work ok for the offense and special teams, great defenses in the NFL are typically veteran heavy. The great playcalling of Capers might be their only saving grace. Letting great players like Woodson go seems to cost a lot more on defense!

Clay is more interested making commercials, The secondary starters get injured but the backup players seem just as good! they all watch the other team catch the ball and then they try to knock them down instead of tackling the ball carrier. The corners are small compare to todays receivers. The whole team seems to be getting comfortable with losing! They just look the same every year! Excusses are like A-holes everybody has one! Get some players that want to be packers!!!!

The biggest problem with the defense for 2013 was the tackling (horrible), and the defensive backfield. We made a lot of quarterbacks and running backs look really good! I had absolutely no confidence that the defense could stop the 49’ers on that last drive in the playoff game. If replacing the coach will help in those areas, then that’s what we need to do…

I sure was hoping to read a resounding NO. No pressure, dbacks trying to cover guys from 10 yards away consistently and never seem to make adjustments. Most games it looks like they’re playing flag football, watch the guy catch it and then try to make a play. Same scheme will yield the same results. It’s time for him to go.

I want to believe that Capers is not completely at fault. I see the problem on defense being that the Packers lack impact players.I don’t think Mathews is a complete player. They need 5 impact players. Charles Woodson is a great example of an impact player.
I think getting rid of Capers would give the Packers a fresh start on defense. We just can’t keep relying on the offense to out score the opposition. Defense wins championships period.

Lots of things that many people see. Some I agree with and some I don’t. here are some observations that I see.

    1) There have been a great deal of injuries in the last few seasons. But this is something that has to be looked at and countered in some way. After having a second season (possibly third), this would start falling under the category of “it’s not an excuse anymore.”

    2) Should Capers be released/fired? Debatable question. After two seasons (possibly 3) of having, at best, average defensive stats (mostly poor in my opinion), the defense is faltering. Lack of take-a-ways, can’t stop the run, etc… It’s kind of dis-heartening. I don’t predict this will change with the current coaching staff for next year either. Do we want another year of our defense being average at best? I don’t and it seems a great deal of other people don’t either. I think it is time to look for suitable replacements in the defensive coaching area. But first find the replacements before parting ways with what we do have. After all, its not horrible, but definitely an area we need to look at.

    3) Most of the time when Aaron Rodgers gets sacked, it falls under the category of coverage sacks. This leaves two reasons for those. Do our receivers have the ability to get open? Or are the plays not allowing them to get open? Either way, coverage sacks should not be happening as much as they are. Our offensive line is doing a great job. You can’t expect them to hold the defense forever.

    4) There isn’t a lot of push coming from our defensive line. Hardly ever do you see them making any run stops. They fill the gaps ok-ish, but we need more than just that from them. And with them being injured as often as they are, I think it is time to start looking at future draft picks on that area.

    5) Linebackers? We got punished this year with injuries. So the question remains “are we working enough with our back-ups?” Hawk is a good linebacker although lacking in a bit in speed. #52 is a good “aggressive” linebacker, but you can tell he still has a ways to go to fall into the experienced category. But that is about it. The rest seem to have promise, but it feels as though they are left to dry in regards to “where they should be?” Coaching or players? Not really sure on that. I think it is a combination of both. Players more so because of experience. Coaches because of “lack of training” and possibly not focusing too much on basics.

    6) We got hit a bit with injuries in regards to CB’s and safeties. We do have a few good players. But as far as progression goes, I don’t see much more than that coming from them. I think we need some more experience in that area. Bush is good as a back-up, but that is about it. There is better out there than can be starters. I do think that we are better in that position though when looking at press coverages. Why we didn’t utilize that more this year baffles me.

    7) I think the Packers should spend a few more dollars and get some more experienced guys playing with the younger ones. If one man gets hurt, this wouldn’t be an issue. In a 3-4 defense, the linebacker corp is the biggest aspect of the defense. There should be more than just 1+1/2 experienced linebackers in a defense of such nature.

    OVERALL
    In my opinion
Offensively, we need better play calling. There is absolutely no reason to go 3 and out in the first two possessions of a game with the NFL’s best quarterback getting coverage sacked. We have a good (soon to be great) running back (Lacey) with a good back-up to help support the QB and the line. So work on the receiver routes possibly or the receivers themselves in getting open.

Defensively, hard to say. Soo many things wrong there. I personally think that we need to focus this years draft AND free agency signing as well as possibly looking at some coaching changes defensively!

The one thing about McCarthy is that he is very head strong. This could be why he is shown the door in the next year or so.

Capers needs to go. It looks to me that the offenses schemes has past his defense by.

First, I cannot understand why every year we have half the team out with injuries? Everyone has injuries it’s a long season, But we have 2 or 3 guys out every week! It then seems that most are lost for the season, What’s going on there? Second, I don’t believe in overspending on free agents. That being said this Team is not one or two players
from reaching the SuperBowl so Ted Thompson quit being so
arrogant to think that the Draft will solve all our needs.
We need to upgrade our sorry o-line, get an outside LB with power and speed. Defensive line help. Then get some ball hawks in the secondary who can challenge receivers. Then Last quit hanging on to injury prone players like Sherrod, and I hate to say it: Clay Mathews Who are spending half the season on the bench. Put up or get out!

  115. By OdinsEye on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

What the heck is wrong with Mike McCarthy? You mean to tell that a coach that talks about winning the Super Bowl cannot see the subpar performance of this defense. Granted, this year the team had injuries. So what! So have most other teams.

For three years, the Packer defense has been horrendous. One of the knocks against Aaron Rodgers not too long ago was that he wasn’t able to lead the Packers to fourth quarter comebacks. Really? The problem was as we seen many times over the past three years is that he would lead the team back to what should have been fourth quarter victories only to have Dom Capers’ defense give the victory right back to the opposition.

If the Packers fire Dom Capers and he is picked up by another team, someone mentioned Minnesota, who cares? That gives the Packers another team to run up 50+ points against and gain perhaps 700 yards.

If the Packers retain Dom Capers, perhaps Aaron Rodgers and the offense should ask to be traded.

I really would like to be wrong about Dom Capers, but history says otherwise. I want to the Packers bring home the Lombardi Trophy next year. But without some drastic changes in the coaching staff, especially getting a new defensive coordinator, I have a hard time seeing it happening.

I continue to be discouraged with your teams “Survival” skills and not being a TEAM!! Counting on one person does not work. Your offensive line is like a sieve in allowing your opponents to get to the QB. There is NO “pocket” for them as it dissolves immediately. Your defense does not play to the ball, but to the person, hence the interference calls… Playing focused on the ball will get more INTs and those bonus points. Even the military has a hard time looking long distance, so the basic 10 and out should be used more to gain yardage in open field plays. I think about the bears game and how their quarterback was able to stand in the open with many seconds to look down field and not one packer player getting near him time and time again versus our quarterback getting hurried and rushed and sacked again and again … this has gone on way too long

I find the comments listed here to be somewhat hasty and not covering the problem w/ our “D”
First,if the management is happy with Don’s coaching then they would have no reason to find a new one.perhaps the play where Davon House turned in instead of out to stop Cappy,we might be getting ready to play Carolina.Should’ve,could’ve,would’ve is really the players responsibility to remember the scheme that’s called. The real problem with the “D” is we need some new players to rush the qb and fill in for lineman that are not fast enough. Our backs have always had trouble of not tackling and not looking back for the ball.I would think that MM would seriously consider rebuilding that D line and maybe pick up some quality DB’s in the draft or even a free agent.Coaches can only do so much. The players make it happen.I suggest that when training camp begins that our coaches take seriously the task of teaching how to tackle.Very poor!

TT MM and DC all need to go. This team as we seen without Rodgers is below average. TT has failed in the draft. We have average wide outs, below average O-line and decent running back. We all know how the defense fairs. TT has hit on 1 pick Clay who plays half a season. MM can not call a game. He has Rodgers to cover his bad play calling. DC is a proven DC but cant do much with TT miss in the draft. Packer fans should be scared of Detroit and Chicago. These teams are loaded with talent. Chicago has a great O-line and best wideout tandem in the NFL. Detroit may have the most talent in the NFL, just need a coach.

Capers record speaks for itself? he’s been fired several times for not being able to adjust. 48-80 as a head coach .375 winning percentage and Outstanding Coaches usually get promotions to Head Coaches.
    ~
I also agree watching him stoned faced in a nice warm press box when he should be down on the field motivating players that are fill in’s for the injured I mean injuries hurt they do so why not get more involved with a hands on approach?
    ~
I also love the were in our 3rd day of evaluations I mean you have the best seats in the house and always its evaluations like you can’t see what goes on during the whole season.

Bottom line is McCarthy is now on the Hooks for Capers Defense and when it goes South and all these Guys get rode out of town one day I wonder what excuses from the bubble pod will they all have.

I’ll give Capers the benefit of the doubt and say that the defense of players were just not great enough to make the plays happen where it should have happened. Let’s start with our safeties and get more competant play makers into the game and upgrade the defensive linemen. Ryan Pickett can’t do everything by himself. If we swim after these changes, then I’d say Capers isnt the issue

I think its a combo platter. Either some level of conditioning or awareness isn’t being coached. We’ve had to many starters hurt year after year, and have to plug to many holes with new and up comming players that haven’t had enough time in the system. Capers no Capers I’m on the fence on that one. For half the season we didn’t have 4-6 of our best weapons on the field Rodgers, Cobb, Finley, Jones, Mathews, Starks, Neal, Jolly, etc. etc. etc. You can’t get any kind of consistency out of that. We had that Niners game it just came down to a couple plays that didn’t fall our way. We could have stole that from them, they were favored. We almost made it.

  146. By BigDaddyStuck on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

I do think changes need to be made. It is obvious that MM wants Capers to stay. However, I think that the defenses numbers over the last 3 seasons show a downward trend. In my opinion, it is a combination of scheme/playcalling and personnel. Capers is so convinced his way is the right way that he is not willing to even try different things. Simply, the game has changed and he hasn’t changed with it. I agree that TT needs to open up the strings on the purse a little and get some veteran help. We spent so many draft picks on defensive players the last few years, and didn’t reap the rewards. I have no problem drafting good young talent, but their has to be a mixture with some veterans.

I have faith in Dom Capers. I think many times the scheme called was not proficiently executed by the young players. Too many times I would see 2 players in the same area and that indicates one, or both, of the players mis-communicated. For instance, wasn’t Micah Hyde in the right place in Sunday’s game?…wasn’t Tramon Williams in the right place on his INT. One of them executed properly, the other one did not. I also believe anytime you make a coaching change that involves a coordinator or head coach, you are basically taking 2 steps backwards in overall team progression.

Player ability on Defense is over rated, when Woodson was in the secondary he made them all better. The big loss was Cullen Jenkins , Clay Matthews is not as good without Jenkins on the line.
The OL is pathetic and always injured , McCarthy has been rebuilding the OL since he’s been there. The succcessful teams seem to have more beef on OL and DL.
There is a lot of talent on the team but not enough leadership and key position players.
Other teams have injuries and make the playoffs look at Seattle and the Forty Niners.Maybe the conditioning tegimen isn’t good enough.
To lose to Kapernick at home is absurd , he’s 3-0 against the Packers.
The really big thing that is frutrating is the lapses of good play in all 4 quarters , getting behind and having to overcome is just too much for any team to be a winner.

  173. By sephirothdzx on Jan 8, 2014 | Reply

The Packers have been in the bottom half of the league for the last 3 years in overall defense and in the playoffs the Packers have given up 37, 45, and 23 points in their 3 playoff losses since the Super Bowl.

Capers has had plenty of time to fix this defense and it never changes. The Packers cant keep wasting their championship caliber offense because of their college level defense. They won’t be able to make any playoff runs if they’re forced to score 30+ a game just to have a shot at winning.

Capers has to go. There are no more excuses.

Look how good the defense was at the start of the season. Then injuries start to take a toll. I think we need a new conditioning coach . Some how some way they have got to stop the injury bug from biting them in the but. This liter practice schedule by the NFL is to blame. They say you practice like you play. If you are not having enough full contact in practice you get injured on game day.The days where players play through injuries is over. To much money and a more conservative approach from the medical staff. Due to the lawsuit won by players .Players not playing up to the expectations at draft.I believe that stems from to much money for rookies and vets get shown the door due to veterans minimums .Contracts need to be more incentive driven.

The problem with in GreenBay is a thing called losing. And like any other NFL team the more ya lose the more the fans, the players and the coaches seem to get accustom to it, believe it or not! After awhile it becomes part of the locker room psyche, almost accepted or not surprised when ya do lose. At first ya don’t notice it, but then it seats itself within and then the long downward spiral begins. The one and only way to fix this is new blood at the top. Someone that is drivin, someone that doesn’t care about who you are, how great you think you are, or how much money you make. Anyone out there remember this statement, “Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.” Does any of that ring a bell. How many more seasons do ya wanna sit on a bar stool, party off the tailgate or sit on froozen aluminum beachers with the same words coming out of your mouth, “yaa what about that Pack, yaa sure is a shame don’t-cha know, yaa but we beat da bears…… aah”. True……but I’m done with that bull, been there done that enough is enough. If Vince were alive today, you damn well know someone would’ve got their locker,or desk cleaned out!! “ Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” Who or Why would anybody ever say that? Someone that’s drivin!!

Very, very disappointed to read this. Capers’ defenses have pretty much sucked ever since he’s been in Green Bay.

Even in the championship year of 2010-2011, his defense gave up a ton of yards but made up for it by getting a lot of turnovers. Well, if other teams don’t oblige you by turning the ball over, you’re left with what we had this year: a defense that can’t get off the field.

From the NFL Blog/Green Bay Packers,
There have been tweaks from season to season depending on personnel and from week to week depending on the opponent, but the basics of it remain the same.

“Really, the basis of our philosophy is being able to stop the run, make the game one-dimensional [and] try to create situations where we can take the ball away,” Capers said Wednesday while wrapping up his 28th NFL season.

    Translation: He needs playmakers.
Thus, the onus is on general manager Ted Thompson to figure out how to infuse this defense with additional talent while trying to decide whether free agents like Raji, Shields,Johnny Jolly, Mike Neal and Ryan Pickett are worth re-signing.

Meanwhile, it will be up to Capers and his staff to develop the returning players.

“We need more impact players, we need more players making plays on defense,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said in his season-ending news conference. “I think that’s stating the obvious. I feel that those guys are here, but do we have more coming in? That’s really what the off season’s for.”
“Being able to stop the run”; 2009 / ranked 2nd in the league – 2010 / ranked 28th in the league – 2011 / ranked 26th in the league – 2012 / ranked 26th in the league – 2013 / ranked 29th in the league. The basis of Caper’s “philosophy” seems to be missed in all but one season!

kinda hilarious that so many think the 4-3 is the answer to all our problems. if you look at teams that graded in the top 10 defensively on PFF over the last 4 years, roughly half (19/40) were 3-4 teams and if you look at teams that placed in the top 5 over the same span, 13 of 20 were 3-4 teams. and that is despite the fact that more teams were playing 4-3 over that period than 3-4 (77 vs. 51). so 3-4 teams were about 10% more likely to be in top 10 and 16% more likely to be in the top 5.

Yea why let Woodson go????? Then look at the QB fiasco……Its sad to see a professional Football Team that has the most world championships and the history with Vince Lombardi brining the team from the worst to the best fall like this…..Green Bay needs another Lombardi to take over because when its run like a democracy you cant do what is best for the team…..they got the medical staff putting their control over the plays because they don’t want no body getting a scratch…..and if they do season ending IR…..Since the Pillsbury Dough Boy as a coach can’t stand up for the team….then who will???? Vince Lombardi did…….If Rodgers ever wakes up and tells them this is how its going to happen…..like Favre did…..then the Packers will dominate once again……My god look at the Bears game……the line had to convince McCarthy to go for it on forth on the last drive of the game……Its should have been treated like a playoff game and when u look at how the defense had a hard time stopping anyone……what did he think they would at that point??? Then look at the Wildcard game…..4th down and goal at the 5 yard line with about 6 min to play a good team will get into field goal range you have to think ahead about the time remaining to get the ball back and clearly with special teams issues was it going to get better all of sudden??? Worst thing is you don’t make it but pin them down in the 5 yard line…..now I would trust to defense to step up and stop them so we get the ball back to at least tie the game….I’m sorry but McCarthy is not a dynamic enough coach to get the packers back to the super bowl unless they have some super good talent……where u can call conservative plays and still win…..I believe 100% the problem at Green Bay lies from the coach on up…

I was a “dump Capers” guy until I realized that it’s really a matter of the right players filling the right spots and adding more talent at defense. That’s dependent on Thompson and the availability of gifted talent.

Getting rid of Dom Capers would be a huge mistake. Our problem is not scheme, and so many NFL teams make changes just for the sake of change. We are smarter than that in Green Bay. The Zone blitz scheme is a high risk – high reward style of play. It is exciting to watch, but it is dependent on capitalizing on our turnover opportunities, which our players failed to do more often than not. Some of that was due to injury and some of that was due to individual inconsistencies. We need to resign as many offensive free agents as we can and focus on improving our defensive talent and depth this off-season.

Lets see…in a playoff game the D-coordinator runs a man coverage across the board and instead of spying Kaperchunk with a LB he rushes the LB leaving a huge gap for Kaperpunk to torch us. Man across the board with no SPY throughout the playoff game explains why Dom needs to depart ways with the Pack. Sorry but those kinds of calls and the fact many times the secondary looked lost is pretty much all the evidence we need. Also check the statistical downfall over the years. Sure players make plays but schemes put them in the position to do so.

A person’s past accomplishments don’t mean diddly. The question is, Dom Capers, what have you done for me lately? The relevant answer is: not much! Get rid of him. I’m tired of hearing TV announcers drone on about what a defensive wizard he is. He has proven over the past 3 seasons that his defense can’t consistently get the job done.

I’m hoping that was just the politically correct answer he wanted to give right now. All you capers fans always defend him by bringing up his history. Well I’m just worried about our history and how our defense has stunk last 3 years. Same old schemes with little to no in game adjustments. Whatever teams are beating us with in first half,, they continue in second half. Gotta take some of this off Aaron’s shoulders. Shouldn’t have tomatch scores in a shoot out every game. INSANITY: Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.

I think its tough to blame Dom Capers for the poor performance of the defense, when there has been so many injures. What is it? we lost 7 of the starting 11 players the first 2-3 weeks of the season. Second & third stringers having to start, not that these guys are not good, but they are second & third string for a reason! I think we should have 6’3″ and taller DB’s to compensate for 6’8″ receivers.

Is Capers responsible for drafting players ideally suited for a 4-3 defense and trying to make them fit in a 3-4 or is it Ted Thompson? Darn near every D-line and Linebacker outside of Matthews is perfect for a 4-3 but they just don’t fit in the 3-4. Time to get the right guys and not fit a square peg in a round hole by “coach ‘em up” mentality.

Just where do we start on improving the D?. D line, bad. Safety’s, bad. Corners, inconsistent. Linebackers, C+. Draft and develop is fine when you have veteran team and have a few years and a few holes to fill but, not in our case. We need to hit the free agency HARD!.

I think the coaching staff is a grade A staff. I think Thompson drafts injury prone players. I understand building from the draft. But sometimes you need to sign some big name free agents. I not saying go crazy and spend wild just a few. They need better talent on defense and the o-line. Maybe they need to switch to a 4-3. Maybe the players are a better fit for that formation I dont know. But to fire capers and start over would be silly. a couple talented players on both sides of the ball will get them back to championship football.

Dom needs to go. Worst called defensive game in years. As a matter of fact, maybe Coach McCarthy could give him a ride and they both could leave town. How many times are we going to run up the middle on 3rd and 2 or 3? Best QB in the league can most likely connect on a three yard rollout. Give us a break. I think that pen in his hat band is sticking into his head………

Dom had one good year but only do to turnovers and offenses leaving Clay singled up. Losing Nick
Collins a few years ago was a big blow, but all teams lose key guys. The facts are plain and simple Dom plays “bend don’t break defense”; therefore, close games are going to be lost.If he can’t get big plays out of his D then we end up watching packerless playoffs or a packer offense that has to score every time they touch the ball. Dom gives up to much yardage, doesn’t get pressure on Qbs, and quite frankly can’t win against good offenses without turnovers. Every team knows how to scheme against Dom’s D.This year i seen a lot of players looking up at Dom’s heated box after bad defensive calls, that tells me players are questioning his calls. when players aren’t on board you get a sub par D. Its time to stop making excuses and move on with a new D coordinator.

Just like DoniGB said “Why don’t we play Rogers, Lacy, Starks in the same back field.”
With those two excellent RBs we would have the option to go left or right side! Absurd!

And ’bout Capers: HE MUST GO!!! Most of the injuries in the defense happend because they have no coordination/plan (that’s how I would call it)! It’s mostly been the own man who caused the injury.

Take a look at Seattle right now (vs. Saints)! What an excellent work. And remember what they have done to SF!
    THIS is DEFENSE!

So, Capers has to retire! And as our play didn’t progress over all, McCarthy too!

  261. By Robert on Jan 11, 2014 | Reply

Need to switch to a 4-3 Defense. What Capers is doing isn’t working and it hadn’t in awhile now, so make so e changes. The Packers already have the personnel in place to build a solid 4-3.

Mike Neal, Nick Perry and Datone Jones are natural 4-3 Defensive Ends. Raji, Pickett, Boyd, Worthy, Jolly and Daniels would be perfect Rotational Defensive Tackles. Clay Matthews would be a great 4-3 Outside LB. Hawk would be a much better MLB in a 4-3 than he is in a 3-4.

They would need to pick up a couple more 4-3 LBs in a Free Agency or in the Draft. They also need serious help at Safety, a FA like Jairus Byrd would be outstanding. We need to Keep Shields, Williams, Hayward, House and Hyde. Draft or sign another bigger CB, someone with the height and reach to cover the tall WRs they face every year.

I’d prefer that Capers kick handed his walking papers and a true 4-3 D/C be brought in but if they insist on keeping him then I’m sure he too could run a 4-3 defense. He sure couldn’t be any worse at it than he is with the 3-4.

first fire Capers, second hire Kevin Greene, third cut Morgan Burnett, he did;nt make a big play all year tthene fact that Capers keeps him out there is unbelieveable. All I wanted for Xmas was for Dom Capers to be out this year. Honestly, he’s needed to be let go each of the last two years. He insists on running a 3-4 and teams are running all over our small defensive line. He orders up blitzes and teams see it a mile away and hit the hot receiver for an easy first down. If we didn’t have Aaron Rodgers GB would have been a 4-win team each of the last two years.

It’s time to get back to basics on defense.

We need someone who can simplify the defense, and actually get them to play downhill. Not like Capers wait and see approach!

So far I know the Packers are the only team in NFL owned by shareholders and not in posses of a industry tycoon! And as a shareholder company, there needs to be something like a general meeting! And every majority of votes can hire and fire!!! So don`t only talk ’bout it, do it! And if the (Vice) President(s) don’t act, kick ‘em too!

We need a change! And we need it now!!!

As Croatian living in Germany I’m not allowed to enjoy being a shareholder! But if I would be: I would fire them all! First of all DC and McC!
For three years we have a predictable (cause unchanged) game! I think each Packers fan knows every coming call by McC! So if we know it, why should the other (coaches) didn’t know it!?

“We needed just one more play!” That’s not right! The OC’s needed to be more couraged! We had to go for a TD! But with almost 7 min. left we kicked a field goal! May be true at this moment the game was tied, but (as most times) the coaches decision was wrong! Just one time, only one time, in such a crucial game you need a grain of brave! You need SPIRIT!!!

I would be much more relaxed and could easygoing watch the playoffs if we tried anything and everything to beat the 49ers! But as we dindn’t, the season is all over! I don’t matter who will become the next champion! I’m so disappointed that I can’t put it into words!

GO FOR IT OR LEAVE IT!

Those who have commented that Capers is not the problem are correct in my mind. The players not making plays or being good enough to match up with the opposing team is the issue. This is Ted Thompson’s problem and he should fix it or be fired. Let’s draft quality and be willing to get a quality defensive player from free agency. It is great to develop your own players but remember it was Reggie White’s signing that put the Pack over the top and made it a Super Bowl winner. We need that kind of help again while we still have a QB that can win games.

  283. By Adam on Jan 16, 2014 | Reply

Don’t think Capers is the issue, and even if he was, a new coordinator would have a lot of trouble fixing the defense. Need more talent on the defensive side period. Not sure where they’re gonna find it though.

B.J. Raji has been terrible at arguably the most important spot on the entire D.

M.D. Jennings is possibly the worst starting safety in the NFL outside of Chris Conte.

The defense will continue to be terrible until we find answers at those positions. I also wonder what they’re going to do with Datone Jones. Spending a first round pick on a guy who only plays on 3rd and long seems like a huge waste.

Jeremy saying Detroit has the best talent in the NFL cause they have a good D line and Calvin Johnson lol that’s ridiculous. The Bears offensive line is about as good as ours when healthy. so these teams are not scaring me like you say I should be. Detroit’s line backers and Db’s are awful and their offensive line and backs will be picked apart the next few years. As far as the Bears well Forte is about to start his decline and they won’t be able to keep both receivers after next year as the # 2 will want #1 money now. Hester is gone this year so now their field position is gone. Briggs is gone so the defense will be worse. The Bears may finish last next year except that Minn may be the worst in the league .
