Would somebody please remove Ted’s thumb out of said body cavity and tell him to get to work.

Please explain to me why the packers saved all that money under the salary cap because if its to sign the 16 players we need to sign is very sad cause when they were paying them before they were not doing there job. Ted get people that can play stop being a cheapscape and sign at least two big name players at least let Dom choose his players.because it looks like jerrys world right now if you know what i mean al davis jr.

Someone please let the fans know that Ted doesn’t have unlimited funds. He has to be smart with the money he does have and cannot sign every player. Unfortunately, some players, even good ones, have to be let go for new ones to take their place. It isn’t necessarily because the players are bad, but because to resign them all is impossible when there is a salary cap.

Ted needs to be a free agent and go to a high school team. He has a dismall record of Draft and Free agents.
Find some good proven players. The draft is like vegas.
you win some but mostly Lose like the packers have been lately

Can we get a free agent general manager !! I mean Ted Thompson and him not making any moves in the free agency has killed the organization and is getting old just being honest we need a new face in the GM position . I can’t stand Ted Thompson

Have you ever seen the team who wins the free agency headlines win the SuperBowl? NO!!! If these guys are so great, why are their own teams not paying them?Blowing money on these guys only stop you from keeping your own good players down the road.

Everyone needs to relax, all of these teams are overpaying for these free agents! Remember we have $29 million in cap space after the shields deal, still have to sign Cobb, and Nelson to extensions and they will both command a lot of money. Be patient people!

whoa Nellie… j byrd for only 26 million,6 yrs.! stop the presses. s shield 39 million. something doesn’t smell right here.byrd 3x pro bowler-shields? for a team that preaches value/not over paying-just got snukered(sic).we literally mortgaged the farm!not that shields isn’t a good player, however,it looks to me we way overpaid, especialy when we have soooo many others that won’t get the money and will probably be let go,going, gone(jones, starks, eds, quarless, raji).where’s the value? looks more like a panic attack by tt. am I having one?yes.

What a sad day to be a Packers fan. I just knew they wouldn’t sign anyone. Our free agents are all gonna sign somewhere else, I just know it.

Hey “mike clement” – Byrd was signed for $54 million, you idiot. Maybe you should spend more time learning spelling, punctuation and capitalization and less time on football, because you are failing at both.

  17. By Packers50 on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

There is a balance that I just do not understand from TT. We do not even have last years misfits on Defence signed. I am not panicking yet, but there has too be some sense of urgency. The players that have the ability to fill the obvious holes (DT,DE,LB and Safety) are going bye. The salary cap demands discipline and balance. There is a difference between discipline and frugal beyond reproach. We are heading there. Cannot start 7 players on D with less that three years experience and expect results in NFC NORTH. I understand that Ware will pick where he wants to go and sounds like Denver has grabbed two of the three. I like Schneider philosophy of draft and fill holes in Seattle. Tough to argue that he got lucky with Wilson but he is also not paying for Corners YET and WR’s. Schneider understands his window of opportunity. Think he left Green Bay before he lost that premise. Good on ya Schneider!

  18. By banlarson on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

Whats telling is none of those 16 have had much interest from other teams. Hmmm, I wonder why that is? It couldn’t be because your entire team is Aaron Rogers and the rest are plug and play filler, could it?

  19. By jOE on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

In Ted I trust. A superbowl win, 5 straight years in the playoffs. We win a lot more games then we lose over TT time here. Can’t you just be satisfied with that?

  20. By Ryan on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

They didn’t pay Sheilds that much for the body of work that he has done to this point, they are paying him for what they think he can be. It is putting a lot of money in an unknown factor but it has to be done in some situations. The only question I have regarding this what Shields would have gotten on the open market considering Verner got less.

The reason why Ted has his job and were sitting behind our desks scrutinizing it is because he must be doing something right.

To be a Packer fan is to believe in draft and develop, something that takes patience and brilliance… I do not see much of that in these posts…

Besides QB’s, where are all successful teams free agents? They are not the big playmakers that you guys are writing about.

I would rather be in our shoes than Chicago, Minnesota, or Detroit who consistently fail, fail, fail… You go TT, true fans love what you do!

I’m a Packer fan I personally am NOT okay with just getting to the playoffs we’ve got to make moves in order to get to the Super Bowl again if we don’t get help for the guys that we have they’re going to leave and we’re going to be starting all over again.I cannot applied mediocracy. We have a history of being champions and I want to get back there.

That GM mode on Madden has obviously made a lot of you more knowledgeable than Thompson in rating talent and managing the salary cap. Cry because you’re still paying rent to your parents, not because of the team you supposedly cheer for.

  29. By comerpackerbacker on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

    Hey Juan,

The reason the Packers “saved all that money under the salary cap” is because they believe in Draft and Develop, not Gamble and Lose. Not only that they still have to try to work long-term deals with Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. You people have to think LONG TERM…not just Win Now. They’ve won the division three times in a row and made the playoffs 5 straight years. How many other teams are able to say that? If any, do they go nuts in free agency? This is the time to let your opponents overpay and ruin their cap stability, and then you have the advantage. Why do people not understand this?

You can’t go by the total $ amount on these contracts,
all that counts is the guaranteed money and whether or not it front loaded or back loaded.

We understand that the defense is in need of some serious help. Draft and develop are fine, but the help comes in 2 to 3 years. This defense needs some help now. So how good are all these free agents we have if no one else is interested in them. Isn’t signing them just wasting money?

  33. By James on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

LOVE the fact that so many readers are self-styled as more capable GM’s than Ted Thompson. I, for one, trust the man. Him, MM, and the rest of the organization know what they are doing, seeing as how we are annual Contenders, even when the Man on both sides of the ball misses extended periods of playing time. Under their guidance, life as a Packers fan has been a damn good one. Keep the $ for the cornerstones of your team, not to throw at every guy who has yet to sign on the dotted line.

    Just draft, baby.

  34. By northerner on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

Stick with the genius in Green Bay and take more D players in the draft. Some of you fans must enjoy losing in the playoffs. I don’t nor did Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren they seen potential in signing FA’s like Reggie White. Our D needs so much help it will take 5 years through the draft to improve it. Or in other words for the talent to become NFL talented. You will see no change or improvement this season so enjoy it and thank TT.

  35. By Rick on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

When Reggie White was signed the salary cap was in its infancy and not fully understood by GM’s. I don’t think we could sign a Reggie White today

Sure hope the Packers can get Chris Clemons off the free agency board-the D needs a solid safety.

I dont pretend to be a GM but am I the only one who wants J.Starks signed now. Even with lacy around having a one/two punch at running back could fix alot on defense. Time of possesion is a game changer. Enouph of the three play scores only to see the other team match us. Ware out their D and we win. It’s that simple.

  38. By tlvince on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

man the packers have a lot of guys that their name starts with a J on this list. Wonder if thats Ted’s secret analytics formula. Jermichael,James, James,John,Johnny. I do wonder what its like to enjoy the free agency period as a fan…..and experience hope/energy…..someone still needs to explain to me how GB is closing the gap in the NFC by losing Finley,James Jones,Raji,Pickett,Neal, etc. potentially. Especially when SF and SEA continue to sign good players. Slow and steady I guess. I’m most worried about losing Finley, he is not easy to replace despite all the flack he gets from fans, he brings a ton to the offense and occupies so much attention in the middle of the field.

  39. By Camron on Mar 12, 2014 | Reply

Sign Flynn, Kuhn and Quarless ASAP… if not too expensive, Jolly and Jones (though we have enough WR depth to replace him), then Neal or Pickett if they agree on a very low base salary… The rest are either too expensive or just not a good fit…

It’s time to stop putting everything on our offense. The defense has to improve and Ted must acknowledge he has to pickup a free agent or two. Good move on not breaking the bank to join the $1 billion spent yesterday on free agency. Be a smart shopper but don’t wait until the shelves are almost empty to shop either. Guess we will draft, keep our good players, and finally get the defense right when Rodgers and Matthews retire!

Wow! Amazing as it seems, it is like Ted Thompson and Vic Ketchman are telling the truth. Shields and Neal are signed, Raji is thinking about coming back (but not at the ridiculous price that was being bandied about). Could it be that the Packers really do want their guys back but are not going to over pay to get them (particularly with one of the deepest drafts in years coming up)?

I can’t wait to see what transpires in the next few weeks. I sure hope Kuhn and Flynn come back–they just seem to contribute more than yards to this team.

Ok without a doubt we need to upgrade the D but it ain’t gonna happen in free agency they need to do it in the draft more money we ditch out for other teams players that means the less we have to keep our guys and quite frankly i’d rather lose with own we drafted then lose with highly overpaid free agents people don’t forget the talent we got and honestly we need to hit in the draft and build that way.

    Brian,

    Ware signed for 3yrs 30mil, 20mil guaranteed.
Revis reortdley signed 1 yr 12mil.

Those 2 deals would have counted 22mil off The Packers 2014 salary cap, leaving about 7mil.

That’s about enough money to sign your rookies and have a little left over in case of injuries.

Are you, Brian, ready to go into 2014 with no viable backup veteran QB? Tolzien will be the man.

Are you ready to go into 2014 with Taylor,Bostic, Stoneburner, and any rookie as your TE’s?

Are you ready to go into 2014 with Daniels, Perry, Jones, Boyd, Neal and Ware as your only D-lineman?

Are you ready to go into 2014 with JC Tretter asyour staring C and Garth Geirhart as your backup?

Because there is no money left to sign anymore Free Agents whether they were with The Packers or not.

Are you ready to let Jordy nelson, Randall Cobb and jarret Boykin hit the FA market in 2015? Because you have spent all your mone, tther is none left to extend them in 2014.

    Think before you post Brian.

Considering the Packers success in the NFC North I think we, as fans, need to back off the GM a little. Acquiring free agents does not always lead to successful acquisitions. The players we have lost did not want to be members of the Packers so good riddance to them.

  59. By Jordon on Mar 13, 2014 | Reply

everyone calm down!!! free agency just started and everyone is going to over pay for the big name players. Remember Ted likes to draft his players. You also want to see what areas other teams address through free agency. That way you can get an idea as to who they might draft. Let the man do his job!!!

  60. By Jordon on Mar 13, 2014 | Reply

They also need to save some cap space to work on deals with both Cobb and Nelson so we don’t loose them next year. Eric Decker just got paid a lot of money so, how much do you think its going to take to retain Cobb and Nelson? They are going to be offered high dollar prices on the market next year.

Mac wants to bring most of them back that’s why Ted is holding on to his money. Mac doesn’t like practicing, just walk throughs and its easier with guys who have been around a while.

Haven’t heard a lot of noise about teams looking at any of our guys other than Findley. Speculation about the rest just speculation: Quarles, EDS is all. No word on any of the others. Doesn’t say much for our 16 free agents does it, two of which we kept, one did get picked up. Sadly, I think there are at least 10 more bums on this team besides these 16.

I’m so glad that Ted Thompson doesn’t care what the majority of fans want because if it was up to the average fan, we would be in a salary cap disaster in no time. The Packers are the best team except maybe the Pats at producing playoff teams consistently without having to take multiyear rebuilding periods.

We are able to do that because we don’t flush cap space down the toilet on aging veteran free agents with flashy names who may or may not fit well into the system. We use it on our own guys who we KNOW fit into the system.

If it were up to most of the guys on here, we’d blow our load on some overhyped guys this year, then lose Nelson and Cobb next year because the cap room will be gone.

It’s easy to understand how fans are impatient with Ted Thompson. He has the luxury of having the best QB/player in the NFL and he continues to believe that surrounding Rodgers with first and second year players(developing)will create his so called ‘dynasty’ that he is hoping for. The writing was on the wall when Rodgers went down last season. Without him the Pack are literally the Minnesota Vikings. No better or worse, which was proved. If Ted’s draft and develop strategy was working I’d like to think the team could still compete with the better teams in the NFL (who strategically sign free agents when needed and where needed). Bottom line is Rodgers will not be around forever and as long as he is still playing Ted Thompson needs to load up and win…NOW! Rodgers is a once in a lifetime player and just getting to the playoffs every year is not good enough with the best player in the most important position in the game. Ron Wolf figured it out…

I am concerned about two positions LB’s and Safety. I am VERY concerned about MLB and specifically JONES/HAWK. They CANNOT cover and are slow to react. Tackles three to five yards back is not positive. If these two positions are not addressed and a rush end. This Defence is once again going to take it on the chin and 8-10 minute drives to end the game we should prepare for. The first pick NEEDS to be a MLB run stopping smashing linebacker. IF mosely is there BONUS and if not address the safety and hope Borland is there in round two. I really hope we are not planning no starting Hawk and Jones.

The recent record is the New England Patriots, 5 years running now with no Super Bowl win. Just be lucky we don’t build our roster and run our organization like that, talk about a horrible job! At least we won a Super Bowl in the last 5 years.

Oh, did you know there’s only 2 teams that have made the playoffs the last 5 years? NE and Green Bay. Know how many made it the last 4 years running? Still the same 2. Know how many made it the last 3 years in a row….add Cincinatti, San Fran, and Denver (thanks to Tim Tebow) to the short list. Know how many of those 5 teams won a Super Bowl in recent memory? Just one…GB

The reality is most of the recent Super Bowl winners were hot for 1-2 years, then didn’t even make the playoffs anymore. GB has managed to not only win a Super Bowl in the last 5 years, but get back to playoffs the next year and contend again. 30 other teams in the league can’t say they’ve been a contender for the last 5 years running, and only 5 can say they’ve been consistent contenders the last 3 years.

Maybe someday when the Packers fade back to being a 4-6 win team and never even sniff making the playoffs will all the haters really appreciate how good things are right now with the Packers organization.

We got peppers…now we need Jared Allen ! The more pressure … the more interceptions !! Pack needs to sign Starks, Kuhn and Jolly and then find a center. Draft a wide receiver and we go to the Super Bowl !! And the upper management needs to look into the quality of our equipment. Too many injuries in the last 5 years. Pack uniforms must be made in China !!

I finally figured out why there are so many Ted haters each year in these posts. It’s a ruse. PR department has 10 or so people pretending to be knuckled-heads posting dumb comments blasting Ted. This way, he looks even more like a genius late in the season when we are blessed yet again with another play-off opportunity! Here, I’ll play along…. C’mon Ted, give up the house and risk the next 10 years to make us feel good in the offseason you GM wannabe (wink-wink)!

Ted Thompson is getting a ear full from the fans of the Green Bay Packers. The first day of signing veteran players the Packers did nothing. Which was because of the top free agents want more than they technically deserve. There would be no point in signing an huge contract. It could bring tension into the locker room from other players & quite frankly, That’s not how the packers organization runs. I am 100% with Ted Thompson. He waited and little & then Boom! JULIUS PEPPERS, ” just like that” even though he was tempted to sign a free agents agents he knew the market would drop significantly & when it did he would make a move. Remember. If Ted Thomp. Felt is were best to sign multiple Veteran players he would. But he’s not because its not best for our organization. I predict just with Julius Peppers alone were already that much more dominate, runn D-fence as well as pash rush.Good job TED THOMPSON. KEEP IT UP :)

  112. By Vincente on Mar 17, 2014 | Reply

You guys need to settle down Ted is saving some cause we have some intricate parts of our team who are coming up on some contract extensions; i.e. Cobb, jordy, lacy if he keeps it up. And our o line. You can’t buy a team in one off season. We have at least 7 years left with Aaron so we got time.

  113. By Green Tide on Mar 17, 2014 | Reply

Raji? Really? Could have let him go, saved money and improved the team all at the same time. Peppers is an interesting pick up and I hope he does well. He may be able to finally give the Pack that impact player on D that they sorely need. Hopefully he will still be good for a year or two.

Wonder when all the TT haters are gonna chime in asking why an “old” possibly injury prone player like Peppers was signed?

They couldn’t win the division, forget a SB, and they can’t beat the Pack.

TT is underachieving as a General Manager. His drafts have not been as good in recent years and he refuses to put any emphasis on free agency (except to sign our own guys; Sam Shields new contract was way generous, although salary cap friendly for the next two years; BJ Raji should not have been resigned, he had his chance; Neil….. Marginal; Starks and Quarless were good signs; I haven’t been impressed with signings of any free agent from another team yet. MM has hitched his wagon to Dom Capers. If another pathetic Defensive year…MM, TT and DC should be fired. Enough is enough…. I hope it doesn’t come to that…

They seem to have a definite focus on getting defensive players in free agency. I hope TT’s choices work out for the Pack.

Sometimes I am ashamed to call some of you Packers fans. Under TT we have made it to the playoffs 5 years in a row and won a SB. Winning mulitple Super Bowls in a short time is possible but EXTREMELY hard. People don’t realize being contenders year in and year out is what makes a successful team. TT has done a fantastic job. He finds gems every year in the draft and LATE in Free Agency when the price drops. Do you want to be like the Broncos and Cowboys who have no Cap at all. If we spent all our money like these moron Packers fans said we should, how would we resign Nelson and Cobb next year? And the Pack is moving Raji back to Nose Tackle. If he gets back to 2010 form then we are going to have to resign him. We have some great players needed extensions soon and none of them will be cheap. So I applaud you TT for saving money for the future because we all know with Aaron Rodgers we will be in the playoffs again. ARod healthy, Eddie Lacy in his second year, Cobb healthy, Clay healthy, Peppers in a new position (with talent around him unlike he had in Chicago this last year) Hyde in his second year and maybe at Saftey, and Heyward healthy…this team can be VERY dangerous. Now lets hope they all stay healthy of course. Other then that, calm down Packers fans. TT and MM know what their doing and you don’t.

Most of you guys sound so stupid. The NFL is a business. You can’t just go out and sign whoever you want, you have to sign players based on value. When you have the success the Packers have had, their players are going to be worth a lot of money and its stupid to think we can afford all of them. Ted Thompson is a football guru. In the last four years you’ve had four playoff appearances, three division championships, one NFC Championship, one league MVP, one super bowl MVP, two rookie of the years, and A SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONSHIP. Why would you be so negative about this team and the owners. No one in the league has experienced what we have the last four years. Maybe you should be thankful for what you have.

Ron Wolfe > Ted Thompson. At least Wolfe was wise in spending money not blowing it. We have had so many opportunities to get top notch players but TT won’t make a move. So long to M.D., our secondary was abysmal last season.

  140. By kyle on Mar 23, 2014 | Reply

hey Corey that’s why you sign a guy like Owen Daniels . its not like it would be trying to sign jimmy graham. think about it . this seasons nfl draft has tons of good tight ends so you draft a te , and go get Daniels . he is a receiving te who is possession guy he’s not the fastest or biggest guy in the nfl. he is a consistent 70 yards and 1 td a game, probably in his last couple seasons getting off an injury . so he wouldn’t be that expensive and if you remember he was a beast before his injury. I had him on my fantasy team and he produced week in and week out.

first shields is a very good corner, they had to resign him. His cover skills are the best in our devistion. bryd would of been nice, however how do we know if he even wanted to play in the cold. also a safty gets paid a lot less than a corner. you complainers really need to do some research before crying fire tt. dream teams fail all the time. free agents hardly ever make a big difference, every so often you get one, but it usually isn’t till later over looked players

  142. By Kajyn on Mar 25, 2014 | Reply

We’re not building a fantasy team here. Packers have a solid offense. TT knows it. The problem is in the defense which only needs a few tweeks. Why spend an arm and a leg like the Broncos and hope for 1-3 years return investment? Gotta be smart with your money like TT. A C.J. Wilson or Haha Dix is cheaper and better for the future than paying Ward’s or Ware’s salary.
