GREEN BAY–The Packers could be without three starters on defense on Sunday, if Wednesday’s injury report is any indication.
“Datone did not practice today. He’s not recovering as fast as we thought. It’s not coming along. Tested it yesterday,” Coach Mike McCarthy said of defensive end Datone Jones following Wednesday’s practice. The defensive end did not participate in practice and appears likely to miss a second consecutive game due to an ankle injury.
Cornerbacks Tramon Williams (ankle) and Sam Shields (knee) were also non-participants on Wednesday. “Tramon is still further ahead than Sam,” McCarthy said.
The Packers defense will be facing Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, who is coming off a game in which he threw for 284 yards and rushed for 107.
“He’s a big-time player. He’s obviously the focal point of their offense. He looks more comfortable,” McCarthy said in comparing Newton to when he was a rookie in 2011, the last time the two teams faced each other.
