141017-news-now-mccarthy-300GREEN BAY — The Packers have ruled cornerback Sam Shields out and fellow cornerback Tramon Williams questionable for Sunday’s game vs. Carolina.

Shields’ recovery from a knee injury has not progressed to the point he can get on the practice field on Saturday, so he is out this week, and Head Coach Mike McCarthy didn’t have an update as far as a timeline.

Williams, who has an ankle injury, is expected to participate in at least a limited fashion in Saturday’s practice and try to get ready for Sunday’s noon kickoff.

“We’re still going through the process. He’s better today than he was yesterday,” McCarthy said on Friday. “Tomorrow will be the biggest indicator with us going to the practice field. As I stated earlier in the week, we’ll give Tramon Williams every opportunity all the way up until game time to play.”

Williams hasn’t missed a game since Week 2 of the 2011 season, and that’s the only game he’s missed in his career, dating back to 2007. He has played in 128 of a possible 129 career games, including playoffs.

“He’s definitely very durable. He’s an old-school pro,” McCarthy said. “I don’t think there was any question when we got back here Monday he was going to do everything he could to play in this game.”

Elsewhere on the injury report, DE Datone Jones (ankle) is out and will miss his second straight game.

“He’s struggling laterally right now,” McCarthy said. “Until he gets that back, it doesn’t make sense to push it forward. I thought he fought through last Saturday’s practice, but he’s had a setback.”

LB Jamari Lattimore (neck) and WR Jarrett Boykin (groin) are questionable, while LB Sam Barrington (hamstring) and DE Josh Boyd (knee) are probable.
