GREEN BAY — Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy is giving his players an extra day off this week with their next game not until Monday night, Dec. 8, vs. Atlanta.
Players normally get Tuesday off each week, but McCarthy is also giving them Wednesday off before they begin on-field preparations for the Falcons on Thursday. The team will still practice three times during the week as it normally does, only the practices will be on Thursday, Friday and Sunday (rather than Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday).
McCarthy has often been able to give the players a late-season break after playing on Thanksgiving Day, which the Packers have done every other year. This will be just one day and not an entire weekend off, but the hope is it serves as at least a brief respite prior to the stretch run.
“I wanted the players to have an extra day off this week,” McCarthy said on Monday. “I’ve liked that little break before the fourth quarter of our season, and I’m trying to create that here with the Monday night game.”
Injury-wise, McCarthy said CB Sam Shields would be going through the concussion protocol, and LB Jamari Lattimore (ankle) was feeling a little better on Monday than he did Sunday.
“I don’t have a gauge on what their practice participation will be this week,” McCarthy said.
