GREEN BAY–Mike McCarthy left the second and final practice of the Packers’ rookie camp impressed with the collection of talent that’ll round out the Packers’ 90-man roster.
“The two practices, today was definitely a step up from yesterday. I was very pleased with the quality of it. It’s been an excellent two days,” McCarthy told reporters on Saturday. “The energy is tremendous.”
Joe Thomas (pictured), who finished his rookie season last year on the Packers’ practice squad, participated in this year’s rookie camp and will compete for playing time at two inside linebacker positions that are wide open. Thomas made a strong impression in last year’s training camp until sustaining a knee injury.
“He needs to pick up where he left off,” McCarthy said of Thomas.
“The notice part is over. I told everyone Thursday night you’re here for a reason … challenge for a roster spot. A lot of these guys, it’s been really impressive,” McCarthy added. “You have to go into this with an open mind; stick to your philosophy.”
