151001-nn1-650GREEN BAY — The great Aaron Rodgers cadence caper becomes more interesting every day. Coach Mike McCarthy even went so far as to credit Rodgers’ hard count skills for helping the Packers defense.

“He’s good at it. He’s improved on it over time. The whole unit has improved at it. It’s something that’s practiced. It’s great work for our defense,” McCarthy said, referring to the Packers defense coping with hard-count tactics used against it.

49ers Head Coach Jim Tomsula said he has a game-long tape of Rodgers causing free-play offsides, making the hard-count topic a feature attraction for Sunday’s game between the Packers and 49ers.

The Packers are on a short week. That’s their hot topic.

“The energy is great. I’ve been impressed. This is a huge mental preparation week for us. This is a big hurdle, playing on Monday night and then traveling to the West Coast. This is a huge challenge for us,” McCarthy said.

Under Tomsula, previously the 49ers’ defensive line coach, the 49ers have switched to black home uniforms.

“You want it to represent the head coach,” McCarthy said of a team’s┬áplaying style. “The attitude he brings to work, you can see that in his football team. They’re still a physical bunch. The black uniforms are different.”
