GREEN BAY — Packers Coach Mike McCarthy wants to see third-year defensive end Datone Jones take his game to an even higher level.
Jones, a first-round pick in 2013, has been used recently as an outside linebacker. He recorded two sacks in Minnesota and his production and his new usage has been a topic of conversation.
“Datone has been getting some more opportunities. It’s giving him some play-making opportunities. He’s made some big plays but he hasn’t been consistent enough, and that’s where he needs to take the next step. Once he gets that consistency where it needs to be, I think his production will increase more,” McCarthy said on Wednesday, in his final press conference prior to Thursday’s game against the Chicago Bears.
“Our defensive line has done an excellent job and that’s where it all starts. We’re going to need them big tomorrow night,” McCarthy added.
The Packers head coach praised Tuesday’s practice, but said wide receiver Ty Montgomery (ankle) will not be available for Thursday’s game.
