Jordy Nelson to work one-on-one with Aaron Rodgers, go from there

160820-nelson-950GREEN BAY — The Packers’ next practice is on Monday, and when WR Jordy Nelson takes the field for a full workout for the first time, Head Coach Mike McCarthy reiterated on Saturday that his focus will be on individual drills.

“Then we’ll kind of take it from there,” McCarthy said. “But first things first.”

As for whether or not Nelson and QB Aaron Rodgers will play together in a preseason game before Week 1 rolls around, McCarthy was non-committal.

“That’s something we probably need to answer down the road,” he said. “We’ll stay focused on fact that Jordy’s going to practice for the first time, and the individual drills is the emphasis there. Aaron and Jordy will work as much as they possibly can on one-on-one routes and things like that. We have a plan and we’ll start that plan.”

Coming off the second preseason game, McCarthy said the focus for the team will remain on fundamentals. There was a lot to like on film in the Oakland game — he mentioned the performances of LBs Joe Thomas and Carl Bradford, as well as the play of backup offensive linemen Kyle Murphy and Don Barclay specifically, as well as the defense in general — but there’s still plenty to work on over the final two preseason games.

“We’re not playing with the proper leverage points as consistently as we need to. Our aiming points aren’t where we need to be. All the fundamental work, we need to continue to stress that,” McCarthy said. “We have two really big practices this week Monday and Tuesday, and the first opportunity to have a full game-plan week going into a game.”

McCarthy also announced that backup QB Brett Hundley, who re-injured his ankle against the Raiders, is not likely to play on Friday in San Francisco.
