Greg Jennings’ surgery happening this week

Posted by Mike Spofford on October 31, 2012 – 3:48 pm

Mike McCarthy didn’t discuss the specifics, but he said WR Greg Jennings would have his surgery for a torn abdominal muscle in Philadelphia sometime this week.

Jennings was originally scheduled to have the surgery on Tuesday, but it was postponed due to superstorm Sandy. Jennings said last week that he would be able to begin his rehab as soon as the procedure is completed, but he wasn’t putting a timetable on his return, other than to say he hopes to be back in 2012.

In other injury news, WR Jordy Nelson and FB John Kuhn are both dealing with hamstring injuries and are expected to rehab both Wednesday and Thursday, with the possibility that they could practice on Friday if all goes well.

Also, DL Jerel Worthy (concussion) is going through the standard medical protocol and was “feeling a lot better today than he was yesterday,” according to McCarthy

Greg Jennings’ surgery delayed; Jordy Nelson ‘close’ to returning

Posted by Mike Spofford on October 29, 2012 – 5:08 pm

Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy said on Monday that the surgery WR Greg Jennings was planning on having on Tuesday in Philadelphia is being delayed due to Hurricane Sandy.

Jennings was scheduled to have surgery Tuesday on a torn abdominal muscle that has kept him out of the last four games and five of the last seven. How long Jennings will have to wait for the surgery now isn’t known. The specialist whom Jennings visited last week and who will be performing the surgery is based in Philadelphia, which is among the major eastern cities bracing for the storm’s pending landfall.

Also, WR Jordy Nelson is “close” to returning to action, McCarthy said, after missing Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. Nelson tested the hamstring before the game but was then put on the inactive list. The tricky thing with Nelson is that he hasn’t experienced a hamstring injury before, so the medical staff is in “uncharted territory” with him, according to McCarthy.

McCarthy did not comment on the status of other players who missed Sunday’s game due to injuries, including FB John Kuhn (hamstring), LB Nick Perry (knee) and CB Sam Shields (ankle). He said those players will be rehabbing the next couple of days with the hopes that they’ll be allowed to go through testing later this week.

Jennings ruled out again

Posted by Mike Spofford on October 19, 2012 – 3:16 pm

WR Greg Jennings was ruled out on Friday due to his groin injury for a third straight game. Jennings hasn’t played since re-injuring his groin on a TD catch against New Orleans in Week 4.

Mike McCarthy said he was “hopeful” Jennings could return to the field next week.

The rest of the offensive players on the Packers’ injury report are listed as probable, meaning barring something unforeseen they’ll be available to play. That list includes TE Jermichael Finley (shoulder), RB Alex Green (shoulder), QB Aaron Rodgers (calf) and TE D.J. Williams (hamstring).

TE Williams tweaked his hamstring; Starks ready, Jennings not sure

Posted by Mike Spofford on October 11, 2012 – 4:33 pm

TE D.J. Williams missed practice on Thursday due to a hamstring injury he sustained at the end of practice on Wednesday, Mike McCarthy said. His status for Sunday’s game at this point is up in the air. The same goes for TE Jermichael Finley (shoulder), and if both players can’t play, the Packers would be down to just two active tight ends in Tom Crabtree and Ryan Taylor.

“He’s never had a hamstring injury before, so this is new territory for him,” McCarthy said of Williams. “We’ll see where he is tomorrow.”

Williams termed the injury a “little tweak” that’s low in his hamstring, not deep and high in the thigh. He caught two passes for 20 yards in last week’s game after Finley went down, and McCarthy said he was potentially a big part of the offensive plan.

“I felt like I was starting to move along,” Williams said. “It was the same thing in the preseason and I had that little foot nagging injury. But you have to stay positive with a good attitude, so that’s what I’m doing and it’ll all work out.”

McCarthy reiterated on Thursday that he could take decisions on veterans Finley, WR Greg Jennings (groin) and DL B.J. Raji (ankle) up to game time, even if none of them practice this week.

Jennings spoke with reporters and said he gives himself “a chance” to play, but he didn’t sound overly optimistic. He said he doesn’t expect to do any real testing of the injury this week, so it could come down to whether the Packers test him on Sunday in Houston or just let him continue to rest.

“Physically I feel good, (but) physically I felt good before,” said Jennings, who has injured his groin twice this season already. “Only time will tell.”

Meanwhile, RB James Starks has yet to play this season, primarily due to a turf toe injury from the preseason opener, but he’s now off the injury report and expecting to be active on gameday for the first time with RB Cedric Benson on injured reserve.

RB Alex Green has been named the starter by McCarthy, who also said the offense will go with the “hot hand.” That could mean an opening for Starks, who says he’s ready and healthy.

“I’m good. I’ve been running, cutting,” he said. “I’ve done everything on (the toe), pushed off of it. The only thing is I haven’t been tackled by a different team. That’s about it.”

Starks, of course, was a playoff hero in 2010 in helping the Packers string together four straight wins, including the Super Bowl.

“That’s in the past to me,” he said. “That’s how I feel. I haven’t done anything yet. I’m planning on trying to do something this year.

“I’ve got to make the most out of every opportunity I receive, and I’m sure I will.”

Jennings ruled out for Sunday

Posted by Mike Spofford on October 4, 2012 – 3:08 pm

The Packers have already ruled WR Greg Jennings out for Sunday’s game in Indianapolis. He will miss his second game in four weeks with a groin injury.

Mike McCarthy said he spoke with Jennings before practice on Thursday and they felt with his groin injury — which he originally sustained in Week 1 against San Francisco — “we were going around in a circle.” So Jennings is being shut down this week and will only do rehab.

As for G T.J. Lang, he was excused from practice for a personal matter and is expected back on Friday. He is listed on the injury report for missing practice, but the absence is not injury related.

DE Mike Neal practiced in pads for the first time in the regular season, and McCarthy said the coaching staff would take the full week to decide the next step with Neal. If he’s going to play in Sunday’s game, he’ll have to be added to the 53-man roster by 3 p.m. Saturday. Otherwise, he’ll have to be activated by 3 p.m. on Monday, when the one-week roster exemption expires.

Jennings ‘extremely frustrated’

Posted by Mike Spofford on October 3, 2012 – 4:30 pm

So far in 2012, WR Greg Jennings has experienced a concussion that kept him out of two preseason games, a groin injury that sidelined him for Week 2 against Chicago, and now a re-aggravation of that groin injury that could keep him out even longer.

He described himself as “extremely frustrated” at everything he’s having to deal with this season, which is the final year of his current contract. After missing the Bears game, Jennings played in Week 3 in Seattle and experienced some pain, which he felt was normal.

Then early last Sunday against the Saints, he said he “tweaked” it and it gradually got worse to the point he was telling his teammates he knew he wouldn’t be able to finish the game. He did catch his first TD pass of the season against New Orleans.

“Seven years playing this game at this level, I’ve never experienced what I’ve experienced this year,” said Jennings, emphasizing that he’s not worried about his contract situation. “It’s new territory for me, but I’m getting through it.

“You feel like everything’s OK, but the moment you go to do something you’re accustomed to doing it’s just not there. Only time will allow that to come back. I have to take the time.”

How much time is unknown at this point. He said the plan will be to ease him back into things once he feels healthy again, saying only of the timetable, “however long it takes.”

“Now it’s just a matter of being smart,” Jennings said. “I can’t keep having that up-and-down, in-one-game-out-the-next. I can’t keep doing that to myself or the team.”

WR Jennings not practicing Wednesday

Posted by Mike Spofford on October 3, 2012 – 12:27 pm

As expected, WR Greg Jennings was not practicing on Wednesday during the portion of the workout open to the media. Jennings left last Sunday’s game with a groin injury, the second time this season he has injured the groin. He missed one game, in Week 2 vs. Chicago, the first time he hurt it, and Mike McCarthy said earlier this week that shutting Jennings down for a period of time might be an option.

The other Jennings, safety M.D., was practicing despite leaving the Saints game with a shoulder injury.

The only other player on the active roster not practicing was rookie S Sean Richardson, who remains out with a hamstring injury.

DE Mike Neal was also practicing for the first time in the regular season. Neal just finished serving a four-game suspension, and the Packers now have a one-week roster exemption to let him practice. After missing so much time, it would seem unlikely Neal would be activated for Sunday’s game in Indianapolis, but McCarthy will be addressing the media after practice with an update.

Jennings practicing on Saturday

Posted by Mike Spofford on September 22, 2012 – 11:40 am

As he said he would, WR Greg Jennings was practicing on Saturday in the portion of the workout open to the media. Jennings is trying to come back from a groin injury that forced him to miss Week 2 against Chicago.

However, TE Tom Crabtree (shoulder), LB Jamari Lattimore (ankle) and rookie S Sean Richardson (hamstring) were not practicing.

Coach Mike McCarthy will address the media following practice and the final designations (probable, questionable, etc.) on the injured players will be announced.

Jennings says he’s ‘ready to go’

Posted by Mike Spofford on September 21, 2012 – 4:12 pm

During the closed portion of Friday’s practice, after the media left, it turned out WR Greg Jennings did participate on a limited basis, and speaking with reporters afterwards he sounded optimistic about his chances to play Monday night in Seattle.

“It feels better,” Jennings said of his groin injury, which kept him out of the Week 2 victory over the Bears. “It’s not 100 percent. I’m not going to sit here and act like it’s 100 percent, but it feels really good. I’m extremely excited about the progress.

“Right now, in my mind, I’m ready to go. Felt good. Didn’t feel great, but I felt good enough to where, oh yeah, I can do this.”

Jennings said he expected to practice again on Saturday, but he’s aware the concern of the coaching and medical staffs is that he not re-aggravate the groin injury to the point it sidelines him again, perhaps for even longer. That was the concern after Jennings tested the injury on Tuesday and then had to sit out Thursday’s practice.

Combined with the concussion Jennings sustained during training camp, he called this “a rough start” to the season. He also ended last season on a rough note, sitting out the final three regular-season games with a knee injury and then leaving the playoff game early with a rib problem.

Despite all the missed time, though, Jennings doesn’t feel his timing with QB Aaron Rodgers will suffer considerably when he does return.

“It’s just a matter of being out there consistently,” he said. “That comes back like riding a bike, so I’m not concerned about that. It’s just making sure that I’m ready to be out there, and when I am out there, I can have endurance to stay out there.”

Jennings still not practicing

Posted by Mike Spofford on September 21, 2012 – 12:26 pm

WR Greg Jennings was not practicing again on Friday during the portion of the workout open to the media. Jennings also missed Thursday’s practice with his groin injury.

The Packers were practicing in pads for the second time this week. They also wore pads on Tuesday.

LB Jamari Lattimore (ankle) also continued to sit out, but TE Tom Crabtree (shoulder) returned to practice on Friday.

Mike McCarthy will speak to the media following practice with an injury update.
