Packers please fans with selection of Jared Abbrederis

140510-abbrederis-jared-300GREEN BAY–The Packers’ second of two fifth-round picks will meet with a lot of fan popularity. Wisconsin wide receiver Jared Abbrederis was selected with the 176th overall pick, the final pick of the draft’s fifth round and the Packers’ second selection of a wide receiver in this draft. Abbrederis, 6-1, 195, is a favorite of Badgers fans.

He won the 2013 Burlsworth Trophy as the nation’s top player who began his career as a walk-on, and finished his career tied for the school record for receptions (202) and ranked No. 2 all-time at Wisconsin in receiving yards (3,140) and touchdown receptions (23). In 2013, Abbrederis had 78 catches, 1,081 yards and seven TDs. He was first-team All-Big 10 the last two years and had nine 100-yard games in his career, including one 200-yard game vs. Ohio State (Bradley Roby) last season. Abbrederis ran 4.50 at the combine this past February and would seem to fit best as a slot receiver.

“Smart, efficient and tough. Reads the defense, finds the seam and catches the ball. Destroyed Bradley Roby this season,” packers.com draft analyst Tony Pauline said of Abbrederis.
