Former Packers WR Sterling Sharpe inducted into College Football Hall of Fame

Posted by Mike Spofford on December 14, 2014 – 10:23 am

Former Packers WR Sterling Sharpe was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame this past week.

After a decorated career at South Carolina, Sharpe was the Packers’ first-round draft pick in 1988. He played seven seasons with the Packers before a neck injury forced him to retire early.

In those seven seasons (1988-94), Sharpe caught 595 passes for 8,134 yards and 65 touchdowns. He ranks second, third and second, respectively, on the franchise’s all-time list in those categories. He also had a streak of 103 consecutive games with at least one reception, second only to Donald Driver’s 133-game streak in franchise annals.

Sharpe led the league in pass receptions in three different seasons. His 112 receptions in 1993 still rank first on Green Bay’s all-time single-season list. His 18 TD catches in 1994 also remain the team’s single-season record. That broke a franchise record that had stood for 52 years, Don Hutson’s 17 TD grabs in 1942.

At South Carolina, he hauled in 169 passes for 2,497 yards and 17 touchdowns in his career, catching at least one pass in 34 straight games, with 10 games of at least 100 receiving yards. He’s just the second Gamecocks player to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, joining Heisman Trophy winning RB George Rogers.

Sharpe was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 2002.

Rodgers paired with Romo and Rice in American Century Championship

Posted by Duke Bobber on July 19, 2012 – 7:37 pm

Tony Romo and Aaron Rodgers

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo are paired with Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice in the featured group at 12:55 p.m. (CT) Friday at the 54-hole American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. With 5/2 odds, Romo is the favorite to win. Here is how the green & gold stack up against the odds:

– Sterling Sharpe  18/1
– Aaron Rodgers  50/1
– A.J. Hawk  300/1

Hawk will be teeing off with Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith.

Here’s what A.J. Hawk had to say about the tournament:

Q: Are you excited about this tournament?
Hawk: No, because I probably have no shot of winning. But it’s gonna be fun. You know, I get to play golf.

Q: What have you been doing to prepare for this?
Hawk: Nothing really. Just playing golf.

Q: Are you in it to win it?
Hawk: Oh, I’d love to win it, but this week is the most golf I’ve ever played in my life. I’ve never played more than once in a week. So it’s like playing four, five days in a row. I only have so many decent shots in me.

Q: What’s your goal for this year?
Hawk: I’d love to be in positive numbers, which I’ve never been. But I just always fall apart. I’ll be doing decent, but then I’ll have three or four double bogeys in a row and negative-10 right away, it’s terrible.

Q: What is it about this tournament that you like so much?
Hawk: It’s just awesome. Everything about it is awesome. I mean it’s crazy. And you get to compete, too. Obviously I’m not competing for anything, but I still get to compete to try and do better. I’m definitely trying to improve from last year. I was like in 66th place last year, which was terrible. I feel like every other player, if I played decent I could jump up like 20 spots.

Update: Out of 82 golfers, here’s where the current and former Packers placed:

– T11, Sterling Sharpe
– T15, Ryan Longwell
– 33, Jim McMahon
– T35, Aaron Rodgers
– T64, A.J. Hawk

Several Packers players are hitting the links this week at the 2012 American Century Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe, Nev. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, WR Donald Driver, LB A.J. Hawk and former WR Sterling Sharpe are participating in the celebrity tournament. More than 80 of the biggest sports and entertainment stars are playing in the made-for-TV event. It’s not the first appearance by Packers players in the annual week of events. Hawk took home long drive competition honors in 2009 and 2011 with his blasts of 322 and 337 yards, respectively.

2012 marks Rodgers‘ eighth appearance in the event. His best finish was in 2006, when he tied for 32nd. Last year he tied for 39th.
