Monday evening practice report

LB A.J. Hawk, who sprained an ankle last Thursday, returned to practice as a “trial,” according to Head Coach Mike McCarthy. He did the opening jog-through portion and then took scout team reps during team periods.

T/G Bryan Bulaga dropped out of practice with a hip flexor. McCarthy said it had been bothering him and it flared up on him. DE Cullen Jenkins also dropped out of practice with a calf strain.

LB Brad Jones (shoulder) did only the jog-through but then left practice. Also sitting out was T/G Allen Barbre, though his injury was not discussed, and RB Quinn Porter, who injured his ankle in Saturday’s preseason game.

Remaining out were RB Kregg Lumpkin (hamstring), LB Alex Joseph (quad) and LB Clay Matthews (hamstring), who said he is targeting the preseason finale at Kansas City (Sept. 2) for his return. The three PUP players — safety Atari Bigby (ankle), CB Al Harris (knee) and RB James Starks (hamstring) also remained out.

LB Brandon Chillar, who has moved from inside to outside linebacker earlier in camp, was back taking snaps on the inside Monday night. That elevated rookie LB Frank Zombo to the first-team nickel package on the outside.

TE/LB Spencer Havner was back working on the offensive side. Meanwhile WR Jordy Nelson took the first rep on kickoff return, while S Will Blackmon was first up on punt return.

In team work, TE Jermichael Finley came right back after dropping a low throw over the middle from QB Aaron Rodgers and made a leaping grab along the sidelines on the very next play.

The defense was rotating a quartet of players through at the nickel CB position — Brandon Underwood, Pat Lee, Sam Shields and Jarrett Bush.

CB Charles Woodson dropped a potential interception on a pass from QB Matt Flynn to Nelson. With his hands, that’s not seen often. True to form, the next time Woodson had a chance for an INT, he picked a throw from QB Graham Harrell clean when he stepped in front of WR Charles Dillon on a short hook route. The INT would have gone for a touchdown the other way.

S Morgan Burnett also nearly had an INT when Harrell tried to go deep over the middle to WR Chastin West. Later, on the final play of practice, when Harrell tried to connect with West on a crossing route, he threw behind him and S Nick Collins picked it off.

That concluded the final night practice of 2010.  The players return to an “in-season” schedule on Tuesday with practice at 10:45 a.m. to prepare for Thursday’s home preseason game against Indianapolis.

Coach McCarthy’s press conference transcript is here. Monday’s Training Camp Report is right here.
