Packers, Woodson on SI cover

New Spirit In Green BayCharles Woodson’s dive for a touchdown at the completion of his interception return in Sunday’s game against Detroit is the cover photo for this week’s Sports Illustrated (Midwest cover).

The cover story, entitled “Mr. Rodgers’ Neighborhood” and written by Damon Hack, includes QB Aaron Rodgers discussing some of his formative time at Butte College, and his first year under Head Coach Mike McCarthy, one year after the 49ers — with McCarthy as offensive coordinator — bypassed Rodgers in the draft to select Utah QB Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick.

Recalling his first meeting with McCarthy, Rodgers told Hack: “The first day he got here he wanted to table it right away and I wanted to talk about it. He said, ‘We didn’t pick you. Now I’m  here — let’s move on.’ I was like, ‘Hey, let’s rewind this a year.  What did you guys not see?’ I got after him a little bit because he’s made some comments in the years since, like ‘We didn’t know he was that athletic in college.'”

The issue, hitting newsstands this week, is dated Oct. 11.
