Game blog recap

Posted by Duke Bobber on October 24, 2010 – 11:38 pm

Below is the full text from Sunday night’s Packers-Vikings Game Blog:

Inactive for the Packers tonight: FB Q. Johnson, LB Brady Poppinga, LB Maurice Simpkins, T Mark Tauscher, G Nick McDonald, G/T Marshall Newhouse, DE Mike Neal & DE Michael Montgomery.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:04
6:05

That means LB Clay Matthews, DE Ryan Pickett and LB Brandon Chillar are all set to play for Green Bay.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:05
6:06

Inactive for the Vikings tonight: QB Joe Webb (3rd QB), WR Hank Baskett, CB Lito Sheppard, RB Albert Young, S Husain Abdullah, LB Erin Henderson, G Chris DeGeare, & DT Fred Evans.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:06
6:11

Starting lineup changes: For the Packers, T Bryan Bulaga starts at RT for Tauscher for the third straight game. For the Vikings, S Tyrell Johnson starts at SS for Abdullah.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:11
6:14

What crowd has gathered in the stadium at this point just started a chorus of boos. But it wasn’t Brett Favre coming out of the tunnel to warm up for the Vikings. It was K Ryan Longwell, the Packers’ all-time leading scorer.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:14
6:16

Only the kickers warming up now for Minnesota. No sign of any other players … yet.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:16
6:21

Neither Al Harris nor Atari Bigby was activated from the PUP list for tonight’s game. They are still officially not on the roster. The Packers have two more weeks in which they must activate them or put them on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:21
6:21

Barring an injury in practice, I would expect activation at some point rather than IR. But you won’t see either player tonight.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:21
6:23

Weather-wise, it’s cloudy and humid in the high 50s right now. Forecast is for possible showers and thunderstorms later in the evening. 40-60 percent I believe.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:23
6:27

Kickoff is slated for 7:30. Neither team is wearing alternate jerseys. Vikings are in all whites with purple trim. Packers in home standard gold pants, green jerseys.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:27
6:31

RB James Starks has not been activated from PUP either. He didn’t do nearly as much work in practice this week as Harris or Bigby, so his potential activation to the roster within the next couple of weeks seems uncertain.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:31
6:34

With Chillar active, it will be interesting to see how the Packers line up at inside linebacker. Hawk will still be on the field in the base defense, but it could be Bishop and Chillar in the nickel. But Hawk has played plenty of nickel the past couple of weeks, so we’ll have to see.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:34
6:39

Matthews is active and will start tonight. There’s the possibility the Packers will use him only in pass-rushing situations, and McCarthy hinted at that on Friday. But Matthews indicated if he’s going to play, he’s all in for every down. We shall see.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:39
6:40

Johnny Jolly can apply for reinstatement at the conclusion of the Super Bowl in February. It’s up to the commissioner whether he will be reinstated at that time or if his suspension will continue.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:40
6:40

The boos just got a little louder as Favre came out of the tunnel onto the field to warm up.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:40
6:42

Sidney Rice is still on PUP for the Vikings, not on the active roster.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:42
6:43

Having Pickett back will help against the run. Miami’s Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown combined for 150 rushing yards last week, and it was evident the difference Pickett makes in the running game. Miami was the wrong opponent for Pickett to be injured.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:43
6:46

I don’t think I’ll get into answering fantasy football questions. You can seek advice from other fans on that one.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:46
6:51

Covering Moss will be interesting to watch. Could go with Woodson all game, or Tramon Williams, who CB coach Joe Whitt says is playing the best of any of the corners this season. Or maybe they don’t match up one guy on Moss and mix it up. I’m going to guess Williams, but that’s a guess.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:51
6:53

As I said before, I would expect barring an injury in practice that Harris and Bigby would be activated within the next two weeks.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:53
6:53

Anthony Smith is active tonight. He will probably play primarily on special teams, but he’ll be an option as a backup safety as well.

6:57

OK, this is my first time on this blog format and I finally figured out how to get some of your comments/questions in the narrative. Bear with me …
The nickel CB in this game will be a big position, as it always is. Packers have used Shields, Underwood and Pat Lee at nickel at different times this season. I’ll try to report during the game as soon as I see the Packers go to nickel who’s out there.

Why was Jordy Nelson not returning the kickoffs most of last week? Was it Pat Lee #22? Seemed like he ran way too much sideways.
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:57 Vette79
6:58

Nelson and Lee have both returned kickoffs the past couple of games. Packers are still looking for someone to take a solid hold on that job.

do you know if the packers are going to help with the blocking of jared allen and do you think the vikings could move allen to the other side to face bulaga
Sunday October 24, 2010 6:58 ryan
7:00

Jared Allen almost always goes against the LT, so I would expect it to be Allen vs. Clifton all night. Packers might help a little, but they like the Clifton matchup there. In three previous starts vs. Allen (two in ’08, one in ’07 when Allen was w/KC), Clifton has given up just 1.5 sacks to Allen. Packers didn’t have Clifton for either Minn game last year when Allen racked up 7.5 sacks.

What’s the thought on how long Poppinga will be sidelined?
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:00 Dave
7:01

Poppinga could be out for a while, and it’s not out of the question he’s done for the season. McCarthy said during his arthroscopic surgery this past week, the doctors found “more than they expected,” so the team is still figuring out the long-term diagnosis on Poppinga.

Is Capers going to dial up more blizts’ to get pressure on favre since they couldnt get to him last year?
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:04 ryan
7:05

This is the million dollar question. Last year the Packers never sacked Favre in two games, but it wasn’t for a lack of blitzing. When Capers blitzed, Favre got the ball out. He’s good at that, and has made a career of beating blitzes that way. So Capers backed off the blitzes, focused on stopping Peterson, but Favre still had his way. The defensive approach won’t be known until game time.

is shields ever going to get another shot at returning kicks and punts?
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:08 ryan
7:09

This year, I doubt it. He fumbled too many during spring and summer practices, so they went with the other guys. Always a chance he could try to get back in the mix for next season, though. Shields’ role on special teams seems to be to use his speed as a gunner on punts.

Sunday October 24, 2010 7:11
7:13

I see a lot of questions already addressed, so I’ll review … Harris and Bigby were not activated from PUP for this game. There’s still a two-week window in which they can practice but not count against the 53-man roster. Matthews is active and starting. Peprah should start at S. Pickett and Chillar also active and playing tonight.

what is your take on the third down converstions.packers are having trouble is that due to finley being out?
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:17 duke
7:19

The third-down conversions are a bit of a mystery. Finley being out doesn’t help, but the Packers’ conversion rate on third down when needing 5 yards or less is way below the league average, and that’s what’s hurting. Protection breakdowns seem to be coming on third downs a lot, which isn’t good, obviously. When the Packers are in third-and-long, statistically they’re converting at a rate better than the league average. It’s the third and 1-to-5 that’s not up to snuff right now.

And in nickel, LBs are Matthews, Hawk, Bishop? Or does Chillar replace Hawk?
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:19 G

Good question. I would suspect it will be Chillar in the nickel, but no knowing for sure until we see that package on the field. Always possible it could be Chillar for Bishop in the nickel too, and Hawk stays on the field.

how important is it for the packers to win tonight for a playoff run
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:21 Tim
7:22

Any win is important to make a playoff run, and with three losses in their last four games, the Packers need to get back on the right track. A win tonight and GB is 4-3 and tied for first in the division which Chicago. A loss and GB is only one game back, which isn’t the end of the world, but that would put the Vikings 3-3 and on a roll of their own.

I would expect Matthews to go all out. It’s the only way he knows how to play. If he weren’t healthy enough, he wouldn’t be allowed to play (like last week). If the docs have turned him loose, expect him to have an impact.

OK folks, the game is about to get underway … I’ll be providing updates throughout the game, but per NFL rules this cannot substitute for play-by-play. Packers open on defense in nickel. Shields is nickel CB. Hawk and Bishop at ILB.
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:32
7:34

Packers get a three-and-out on the first series. Peprah makes nice play on Harvin on third down to force punt. Packers take over on their own 39.
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:34
7:40

Promising drive gets thwarted. Rodgers throws an INT to DE Jared Allen on an attempted screen pass left.
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:40
7:40

Packers had just converted one of those troublesome third-and-shorts with a 13-yard pass to James Jones, one of four gains of 10-plus on the drive.
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:40
7:41

That’s Rodgers’ first career INT in the red zone. Line of scrimmage was the 12 on the play. Vikings take over on their 22 with 8:34 left in the first.
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:41
7:44

Packers D gets another three-and-out. Nice pass break-up by Collins on third down. Chillar was in on nickel at ILB on that play. Packers take over on their own 24 with 7:35 left in the first.
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:44
7:51

Packers take 7-0 lead. Jackson 1-yd TD run. Four plays, 76 yards, 2:28. Passes to Jennings for 24 and Jones for 45 down to the 1. Vikings got Jackson for 3-yard loss on first-and-goal but play was nullified by 12 men on field.
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:51
7:51

Rodgers is 4-for-5 for 98 yards. Only miss was the costly INT or this lead would be much bigger right now.
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:51
7:54

Just what the Packers didn’t need. Harvin returns ensuing kickoff 48 yards to put Vikings across midfield. Just like last year’s game here when Harvin’s returns swung momentum.
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:54
7:57

O-lineman T.J. Lang just went in for short-yardage defense on third-and-1. Peterson picked it up. Lang assisted on the tackle.
Sunday October 24, 2010 7:57
8:01

All tied up at 7. Harvin takes a handoff and goes up the middle untouched for a 17-yard TD. 7 plays, 44 yards, 3:56. Vikings take advantage of the good field position off Harvin’s long return.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:01
8:03

Packers have done OK against Peterson so far. 6 carries, 21 yards. Shiancoe has Favre’s only two pass completions.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:03

He’s farther away than Harris and Bigby. Starks did very limited work in practice this past week.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:06
8:08

First quarter ends with Packers on the move. A 32-yard pass to Jones and a 36-yard gain on a screen to Jackson have the Packers on the 9-yard line as they change ends.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:08
8:09

Packers must have seen something on film about the Vikings and how they defend screens. GB has run three screen passes so far. Two have worked well, one was picked off by DE Jared Allen when Rodgers tried to throw it through him.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:09
8:12

Packers get the lead right back, 14-7. Rodgers to Quarless for 9-yd TD on third-and-8. First career TD for Quarless. 5 plays, 79 yards, 1:18.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:12
8:13

Rodgers is 7-of-8 for 175 yards. The only miss was the INT by Jared Allen. Rodgers had 166 yards in the first quarter, most ever for him in the first quarter.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:13
8:14

Favre is 3-for-5 for 15 yards.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:14
8:24

All tied up again at 14. Vikings go right down the field, 76 yards 9 plays, 4:37. Peterson from 1 yard out for the score. Big play was 30-yard pass to Berrian when Favre had all day to throw. Harvin converted a third-and-3 from the 13 on a short swing pass. Originally ruled he scored but replay review put the ball on the 1. No matter, Peterson took it in on next snap.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:24
8:26

Everyone is asking where Jenkins is. He is in uniform but hasn’t played in the game. Don’t know what’s going on there.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:26
8:32

Packers try a trick play. Come out in FG formation for a 55-yarder, but shift into shotgun with holder Matt Flynn as QB. Flynn goes deep to Quarless, who is open, but the ball is slightly overthrown as Quarless falls/dives to the ground. Vikes take over at their own 37 with 7:08 left in the half.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:32
8:41

GB wins its second challenge of the game on a pass to Shiancoe. Ruled a TD, it’s overturned on replay as he used the ground to help catch it. Packers get one additional challenge now after being right twice.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:41
8:42

Jenkins still hasn’t played. Pickett is on the sideline as well. The D has been playing a lot of nickel, which Pickett doesn’t play much.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:42
8:43

Longwell is good from 28 yards to make it 17-14 Vikings with 3:59 left in the first half. The successful challenge takes four points off the board. 8 plays, 53 yards, 3:09. Vikings have scored on three straight drives after two three-and-outs to start the game.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:43
8:48

2 minute warning. Packers have first down on the MInnesota 38 after an 11-yard pass to Jennings to convert third-and-3. After all the trouble on third down the past two games, Packers are 4-of-5 on third down tonight.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:48
8:48

Packers were 5-of-26 on third down last two games. Have almost that many conversions in the first half tonight.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:48
8:54

Vikings kill another promising GB drive with an INT. Rodgers tries to go deep Jennings in the end zone, but former Packer Frank Walker breaks it up and the deflection goes right to Madieu Williams for the INT. 17-14 with 1 minute left in the half.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:54
8:57

Halftime, Vikings lead 17-14.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:57
8:59

Story of the game so far is the Packers blowing offensive chances. 268 yards of offense but just 14 points as three drives into Minnesota territory came up empty. Two INTs and a fake FG that was an incomplete pass. Packers in essence have had five scoring chances and just two scores. Minnesota has had three scoring chances and has 17 points.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:59
9:01

The other story is Jenkins’ absence on defense for GB. He walked across the field to the tunnel at halftime very slowly and with a noticeable limp. The only logical conclusion is he injured himself during warm-ups. There has been no official announcement on his injury in the press box.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:01
9:03

Packers will get the ball to start the second half. A score would be crucial, even just a FG to tie things, otherwise the Vikings will have a chance to go up two scores. That kind of deficit could be tough to overcome the way Minnesota is moving the ball.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:03
9:04

Looked like Rodgers tried to make a Favre play on GB’s last drive of the half there. Second down, scrambled right, tried to heave it to the end zone when Jennings wasn’t open. The INT eliminated the chance to convert on third down or kick a FG to tie the game. FG would have been from 45 yards with no more advancement by the offense.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:04
9:07

The key is, Packers need to be able to forget about the missed opportunities and just keep playing. For all that has gone wrong, they’re only down 3 and there’s a whole half left to play. Dwelling on the missed chances won’t help anything. Packers have proven they can move the ball on this defense. They just have to finish drives.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:07
9:08

United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon performed a complex drill sequence at halftime. Rifles were flying from Marine to Marine. You could hear the rhythmic slap of rifles caught by leather gloves.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:08
9:12

Second half is underway. Pat Lee has taken all the KO returns for GB so far. Packers have it on their own 30.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:12
9:15

Packers go three-and-out on the first drive. Not what they needed. Rodgers tried to go deep to Jones on third-and-2 and it was incomplete.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:15
9:16

An interesting note … Donald Driver does not have a catch yet in the game. He has a streak of 133 consecutive games (139 including playoffs) with at least one reception.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:16

Big INT by Hawk. Brad Jones with pressure from behind on Favre on third down. First INT of Favre by Packers in three games against him. Packers take over on Minnesota 41 with 11:44 left in the third.

Sunday October 24, 2010 9:53
9:54

Huge swing there. Packers only needed inches for the first down and Kuhn lost almost a yard. No room to run. He didn’t have any on the previous fourth down either but fell forward on second effort. No way to wiggle free that time. Big turn of events. Packers passed on a 52-yard FG try, but with only inches to go for the first down, hard to argue with the decision. Offensive line just got beat off the ball there.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:54
9:56

Adrian Peterson just went over 100 yards rushing. That’s the first 100-yard game by a RB against the Packers since St. Louis’ Steven Jackson in Week 3 last year.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:56
9:57

Peterson 21 carries, 107 yards.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:57
10:00

Huge INT by Collins to kill a Minn drive. Leaped over Harvin on a third down pass over the middle for an incredible pick. Three picks of Favre in the game. Packers take over on their own 23 with 9:18 left.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:00
10:01

Driver has been playing but not as much as usual. He does not have a catch in the game, putting his streak in jeopardy. He did miss two days of practice this week with a quadriceps injury.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:01
10:03

Driver was just targeted for a pass for the first time in the game but fell down. Incomplete. Third and 11 from the 22. Big play here.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:03
10:04

Rodgers converts by avoiding the rush and hitting Jennings for 15 yards. Big pickup.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:04
10:06

Packers can’t get another first down. Incomplete on third-and-3. Masthay punts for a fair catch. 39-yard punt. Vikings take over on their own 17 with 6:07 left.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:06
10:08

Packers have a 28-24 lead and 6:07 to protect it. Defense has picked off Favre three times in the second half already. Need another stop.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:08
10:13

Peterson picks up a fourth and short with a 5-yard run. Vikings first down on their own 47 with 2:45 left.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:13
10:15

2-minute warning. It’s third-and-5 for Minnesota from the Green Bay 48-yard line with 1:56 left.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:15
10:18

Peprah with a great pass break up on Harvin. It’s fourth-and-5 from the GB 48 with 1:51 left. Minnesota calls its first timeout.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:18
10:20

Favre to Moss for 13 to convert fourth down. First down on the 35.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:20
10:21

Favre sacked for the first time in three games against GB. Jarius Wynn gets the sack for a 6-yard loss. Minnesota uses second timeout with 1:12 left. Second and 16 on the GB 41.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:21
10:22

Screen to Peterson for 26 yards. Out of bounds at the 15 with 1:03 left.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:22
10:24

Two big penalties on the Vikes. A false start and then a 15-yard facemask on Phil Loadholt. It’s first and 30 on the 35 with :57 left.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:24
10:27

Harvin catches the ball in the end zone for a 35-yard TD, but after review he’s ruled out of bounds. Blown call by the refs, but replay fixed it. It’s second and 30 at the 35 with 48 seconds left.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:27
10:28

Peterson gains 15 on a pass to the 20. MInnesota calls third timeout with 37 seconds left. Third and 15 from the 20.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:28
10:29

Incomplete pass. Fourth and 15 on the 20 with 28 seconds left. This is the ballgame for the Packers.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:29
10:30

Pass for Moss in the end zone is incomplete. 20 seconds left. Packers can run the clock out. Now 4-3 on the season and tied for first with the Bears. Big 28-24 win. Biggest win of the season, for sure.
Sunday October 24, 2010 10:30

6:04

Any win is important to make a playoff run, and with three losses in their last four games, the Packers need to get back on the right track. A win tonight and GB is 4-3 and tied for first in the division which Chicago. A loss and GB is only one game back, which isn’t the end of the world, but that would put the Vikings 3-3 and on a roll of their own.

Packers D gets another three-and-out. Nice pass break-up by Collins on third down. Chillar was in on nickel at ILB on that play. Packers take over on their own 24 with 7:35 left in the first.

O-lineman T.J. Lang just went in for short-yardage defense on third-and-1. Peterson picked it up. Lang assisted on the tackle.

Rodgers is 7-of-8 for 175 yards. The only miss was the INT by Jared Allen. Rodgers had 166 yards in the first quarter, most ever for him in the first quarter.

Favre is 3-for-5 for 15 yards.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:14

All tied up again at 14. Vikings go right down the field, 76 yards 9 plays, 4:37. Peterson from 1 yard out for the score. Big play was 30-yard pass to Berrian when Favre had all day to throw. Harvin converted a third-and-3 from the 13 on a short swing pass. Originally ruled he scored but replay review put the ball on the 1. No matter, Peterson took it in on next snap.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:24

Sunday October 24, 2010 8:26

Jenkins still hasn’t played. Pickett is on the sideline as well. The D has been playing a lot of nickel, which Pickett doesn’t play much.
Sunday October 24, 2010 8:42

United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon performed a complex drill sequence at halftime. Rifles were flying from Marine to Marine. You could hear the rhythmic slap of rifles caught by leather gloves.

Do you know when the packers are going to wear thier alternates?

Sunday October 24, 2010 9:38 Nick

Packers are wearing their alternate jerseys — replicas of 1929 — at home on Dec. 5 vs. San Francisco.

End of the third quarter.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:46

Rodgers just scrambled around the left side and he was marked 1 yard short of the first down. The Packers appear to be deciding whether to challenge the spot because Rodgers may have stretched the ball further than he got credit for.
Sunday October 24, 2010 9:47

Packers already have challenged twice and won, getting a bonus third challenge. If they challenge here, it’s their last challenge regardless whether they win it or lose it.

Haven’t heard anything more on Jenkins. Based on how he was walking at halftime, I can only conclude he injured his leg somehow during warmups.

Packers go for it on fourth and short again and Kuhn gets stuffed. Vikings take over on their own 34 with 12:10 left.
