I wonder how much playing time Driver will see
Sunday November 21, 2010 10:41 JV

I would think Driver should be able to play plenty. Whether the types of routes he runs is dependent on the quadriceps injury remains to be seen.

Is this the game that will define the favre vs. Rogers game since it is probably the last time each will play one another?
Sunday November 21, 2010 10:45 Moose
10:47

Sorry for the delay … my first answer didn’t take. The bottom line is if Favre is truly done after this season, he’ll finish either 3-1 vs. Rodgers/Packers or 2-2. If it’s 3-1, that number will be remembered for a long time.

How has Bulaga taken to his new starting role? He looked great against the Cowboys he seems ready now.
Sunday November 21, 2010 10:47 Ray
10:48

Bulaga certainly has improved since he stepped in. I thought he had a bit of a rough game against the Jets, but that was maybe the best defense GB has faced all season. The coaching staff definitely likes what it has seen from Bulaga.

Do you think the pack will try to spread out the Vikings D early or try to establish the run like they have been doing?
Sunday November 21, 2010 10:48 Tom
10:49

I think that depends on the Vikings, to be honest. In the first game back at Lambeau, the Packers came out throwing and Rodgers was really hot. The Packers moved the ball at will through the air early. If Minnesota gears up to stop that, we may see more run early today. But this game for the most part will be in Rodgers’ hands, you can count on that.

Can’t wait to see Starks in action, if that day comes. Nance over Starks? What’s your thought?
Sunday November 21, 2010 10:50 SN
10:51

Right now Nance has practiced more and had more reps, so he’s active and Starks is not. Starks has had about two weeks of practice and that’s his first full contact since the end of his 2008 season in college. That’s not to say Starks won’t be active at some point by the end of the season, but he needs more time to get banged around and get ready.

Will Jones have the same impact that he had in previous games with Driver back. Does Rodgers target him more often today, even as a #3 WR??
Sunday November 21, 2010 10:51 Gabriel
10:52

Hard to say. I think with Driver and Quarless active we’ll see more four-wide and five-wide sets, which Rodgers likes. Who the ball goes to depends on the defensive set and who’s open, so there’s no way to tell.
Sunday November 21, 2010 10:52

Vikings’ inactives: QB J. Webb, CB L. Sheppard, RB A. Young, S E. Frampton, LB E. Henderson, G C. DeGeare, DT F. Evans, WR H. Baskett

If the Favre-Rodgers series ends up 2-2 i think it will be looked at as a push, but if Rodgers ends up having a career game today do you think he will be looked at as the better quarterback of the match-up in the last 2 years?
Sunday November 21, 2010 10:53 Jeremy
10:54

Maybe. But Favre played lights out in the two games against GB last year. It was phenomenal. The Packers certainly didn’t lose those games because of Rodgers, who also played well, but he’ll need a big game today to match what Favre did against GB last year.

do you think the pack will go to the super bowl
Sunday November 21, 2010 10:54 alec
10:56

I’m going to be diplomatic and say they have as good a chance as anyone in the NFC. At 6-3, they’re one game off the best record (Atlanta, 7-2). Lots of teams in the NFC with 6 and 5 wins, so it’s anybody’s race. It could come down to who plays at home in the playoffs. New Orleans is tough to beat in its dome, so is Atlanta. GB at Lambeau in January is a visiting team’s nightmare. The Giants have a new stadium that will have a whole new playoff feel if they’re at home. As many have said already, the NFC is wide open. Emphasis on wide.

Who do you think will make the biggest impact for the packers defense today?
Sunday November 21, 2010 10:58 Jeremy
10:59

The obvious answer is Matthews because of the pass rush needed on Favre. But I’ll take a different tack and say Desmond Bishop. Stopping Peterson is going to be crucial in this game, and Bishop is the biggest hitter of the run stoppers. He has to make some plays, and make his presence known, for Peterson to not take this game over.

[Comment From JoeJoe: ]
Is Clay Matthews 100%?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:00 Joe
11:00

The answer is no because of his shin, but the Packers limited him in practice all week so he could be as close to 100 percent as possible for the game. When Matthews plays, it’s all out, all the time. He wouldn’t be playing if he couldn’t go full speed.

Is the depleted packers secondary really as good as they have been playing, or are they just getting lucky? Are there any holes you see that Favre can exploit?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:02 Robison
11:03

I don’t think luck has anything to do with it, but I do think Favre will go after Sam Shields today more than he did in the first game. Shields has played well, but he’s a rookie and this is a tough place to play in the first time.

On the Chicago topic, I hear a lot of people saying the packers are an elite team and the bears are not. I love hearing this but with that elite defense they are at least close to being an elite team. If the packers and bears matched up today would the packers offense mixed with their good defense be enough to put them on top?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:04 Jeremy
11:05

The Bears are solid on defense and special teams, and they’ve made the playoffs plenty with a less-than-dynamic offense. And their offense still has a chance to get going with that Cutler/Martz combination. Let’s just say I think that game at Lambeau on Jan. 2 is going to be must-see TV.

Peprah played more than well the first half of the season, will he still be the starter over Bigby?, which i think he should.
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:05 SN
11:06

Peprah is starting for now, but Bigby rotated in at safety in the Dallas game and that rotation probably will continue today. Bigby is going to have to take the job away if he wants it full-time, because Peprah has gotten better the more he has played.

Do the Packers practice differently since the NFL has cracked down on illegal hits?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:07 Joe
11:08

Well, in practice you’re not trying to blow up a receiver coming over the middle because it’s your own teammate, so I don’t think there’s much if any impact on the practice structure. This year, the Packers have had a team tackling period devoted to fundamentals of tackling in practically every practice, but that had to do with the missed tackles on film from last season, not the NFL’s crackdown.

How does Mastay do in domes?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:08 Guest
11:09

We don’t know because this is his first dome game in the NFL. Punters and kickers generally like the indoors, however. The bigger factor is Percy Harvin on returns, if he’s back there on punts. The Vikings have used Greg Camarillo more on punts and Harvin on kickoffs, though.

Who is the rookie of the year for the pack,so far?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:10 doug
11:11

Great question, because Sam Shields, Bryan Bulaga and Frank Zombo are all legitimate candidates. At this point I would lean toward Bulaga because of how the offensive line has protected Rodgers as a whole so far this season, but with Shields now on kickoff returns, he could make some more splash plays that get noticed.

Just not enough practice time yet. He missed all of last season and then all of training camp. He’s had two weeks of full-contact football since the end of 2008. That’s not enough time to be ready to play an NFL game.

How many sacks do you think the packers have a chance at getting today? Also, do you think the streak of takeaways and possibly no turnovers will continue into this game from the previous 10 quarters where the packers had 10 takeaways to 0 turnovers?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:12 Jeremy
11:13

Getting sacks against Favre is tough because he’s so good at getting the ball out. Overall pressure and making him hurry, or try to run on that bad ankle, is more crucial. As for the turnovers, the 10-0 ratio in the last 10 quarters is remarkable, and if the Packers win the turnover battle today, I think they’ll win. But getting no turnovers in this place is almost unheard of. Something always happens.

Sunday November 21, 2010 11:13 mike

He is now. He had a 49-yard return in his first effort against Dallas, and the coaches elevated him to No. 1 on the depth chart there. As far as I know, he’ll be back there today, hopefully on the opening kick if the Packers can win the toss.

correction why isnt shields returing punts
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:16 mike
11:17

I think the coaches like Tramon Williams’ sure hands back there at this point. Catching punts is far more difficult than catching kickoffs because of the odd rotations of the ball and the traffic. I think Shields will need a lot more work in practice fielding punts before he takes that job.

[Comment From JeremyJeremy: ]
Do you think Rodgers will end up being at least an mvp candidate? I’m hearing about how Vick is a lock if he keeps playing like this, but Rodgers makes plays with his legs too, not as explosive but just as important and even with Vicks recent surge, I wouldn’t pick him throwing over Rodgers anyday.
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:17 Jeremy
11:18

For as well as Rodgers has played this season, he just doesn’t rank as highly in the QB categories this year as last year. Vick is playing great, no doubt, and Manning and Brady are doing their usual thing. It’s not easy to crack the upper echelon of that position every year. But Rodgers still has seven more games to try to climb the charts.

Will Vikings sack Rodgers?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:19 Herrero
11:20

Well, they didn’t at Lambeau in the first meeting, and you can bet it’s an emphasis for them to get to Rodgers this time. Vikings D is always better/faster in this building and on this turf. The fact that they sacked Rodgers eight times in here last year, once for a safety, and the Packers still only lost by 7 points tells you that sacks aren’t everything. But the Packers certainly don’t want to allow 8 again.

Will Howard Green get more playing time with pickett hurting?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:20 Guest
11:22

Pickett is scheduled to start, but in the last two games he has played, he hasn’t made it to halftime, leaving more time for Green to play. I know the Packers would like to try a front line of Raji, Pickett and Green together on obvious run downs to see how it fares, because that’s some serious beef. So Green will play at some point, I would think, even if Pickett makes it all the way through the game.

How is Jenkins hand injury? Is his caast almost off?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:23 Guest
11:24

Jenkins no longer has to wear a cast, per se, as far as I know. It’s more of a pad on his hand that doesn’t have any major wrapping around it, so he has more use of his fingers and close to full use of his hand. Hopefully that helps him. He has four sacks this season, but D-line coach Mike Trgovac has told me he’d have at least 3-4 more if he hadn’t been playing with that cast.

I keep hearing about a “Jumbo” package that will be unleashed again the Vikings today on first downs and obvious running situations that includes Green, Raji, and Pickett on the line. Is there any validity to this grouping as explosiveness from Jenkins is needed to keep the pressure balanced on Favre?
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:27 jeff
11:28

I don’t think it will be a basic package, but you might see it on a third-and-1 or fourth-and-1 or something like that. Your point about Jenkins is valid, though, because if the Vikings were to see that big front and call play-action, there might not be any pressure on Favre, at least not in the middle. That’s all part of the chess match.

Are the packers playing the vikings today, or are they playing Brett Favre??
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:29 Gabe.
11:30

They know they’re playing the Vikings, and I would argue that Adrian Peterson is the key to the game. The Packers did a great job on him here last year, but in the game at Lambeau a few weeks ago, Peterson had a strong day. He’s one of the few backs in the league with the ability to take over a game, and the Packers have to keep him in check.

I agree. The move made sense because it’s hard to find somebody halfway through a season that already knows your offense and can contribute. That said, Havner is inactive today, but I would expect him to be on the active 45-man roster before the end of the season.

That hasn’t been common, to be sure, but remember in the first Vikings game this year the Packers came out in FG formation, had Flynn switch to a shotgun snap and they went deep to Quarless. Would have been a big play had Quarless not stumbled and fallen down. Don’t know if there are any more tricks up the sleeve for Minnesota in one year, however.

I believe that all of Clay Matthews’ defensive abilities are derived from his hair. If the Vikings just brought some scissors out onto the field and cut some off while they were in a dogpile, it would be like Samson in the Bible and Matthews would lose all his strength and begin stumbling around like a baby. Sunday November 21, 2010 11:41 Brent
11:42

Might be the most important matchup as far as Packers O vs. Vikings D. Clifton shut out Allen at Lambeau. That will be harder to do here. The Vikings usually rely on their four-man rush when they play at home because they can get off the ball so quick. I think they’ll stick with that unless it’s just not working … then they’ll have to open up the defensive playbook a little.

I believe this game will set the tone for the remainder of the season. A win puts us in the drivers seat. A loss will force to win a game we are not favored to win….they are all big, but this one can eliminate the vikings and put us on track to win the division.
Sunday November 21, 2010 11:48 Barry

I agree with that. The most important part of what you said, I think, is eliminating the Vikings. If the Packers can make this a two-team race against the Bears, when the Bears still have to come to Lambeau, that’s the position you want to be in. Vikings got three big plays — a 25-yard run by Peterson, a 19-yard pass to Gerhart to pick up a third-and-12 (Zombo missed a tackle that would have forced a punt), and a 29-yard pass to Lewis. But the Packers D rose up in the red zone and got the stop. 6:06 left in the first.

Sunday November 21, 2010 12:33

Sunday November 21, 2010 12:57
12:58

Packers are using an assortment of blitzes to get pressure on Favre. He’s had heat on most of the pass plays. He gets rid of the ball to avoid the sacks, but that last series his two rushed throws weren’t even close to being completed.
Sunday November 21, 2010 12:58

Sunday November 21, 2010 1:04

TD pass to Jennings, 11 yards. Rodgers makes great play to scramble out of traffic and fires into end zone. It’s 10-3 GB with 5:14 left in half.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:05
1:06

Packers’ two big plays in the game to set up scores, the 47-yarder to Jennings and the 39-yarder to Jones, were both against CB Chris Cook, a rookie. Packers picked on him early in the game at Lambeau too and he was benched. They’re taking advantage of any matchup they get on him.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:06
1:06

Lucky break — on the play before the TD, Rodgers threw badly and the ball was almost picked off at the goal line by Abdullah. Probably should have been. Packers took advantage and scored on the next snap.

Sidney Rice catches his first pass of the season, good for 17 yards. Minn on their own 42.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:09

Sunday November 21, 2010 1:12

Williams jumps a slant route to Harvin and makes a great INT. Vikings called for penalty on INT return, so Packers take over on their own 47 with 1:03 left in the half.

Packers got into position with 14-yard pass to Quarless, 7-yard pass to Jackson, 9-yard pass to Jones, and a 15-yard pass to Jackson down to the 3. Incredibly efficient drive. Used two timeouts, still have one left.

How has the O-line held up?
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:40 Drake

Since the two early sacks — one of which was Rodgers’ fault for holding the ball too long — the protection has been decent. Rodgers made a great play to avoid a collapsing pocket in the first TD pass to Jennings. Packers are also using a lot of three-step drops to get the ball out.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:41
1:41

Packers receive second-half kickoff. Shields runs it back to the 27.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:41

Rodgers scrambles for 15 yards to pick up a third-and-9. GB on own 44.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:43
1:46

Rodgers to Jennings, 46 yards for TD.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:46
1:46

Jennings makes a great play on a comeback route. He spins away from Asher Allen and then gets Madieu Williams all turned around down the sideline and waltzes into the end zone. It’s 24-3 with 12:01 left in the half.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:46
1:47

RG Josh Sitton lost his helmet blocking on that TD play. His helmet was bouncing around on the turf as Rodgers let go of the ball.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:47

Sunday November 21, 2010 1:57

I’d say it’s been a draw on special teams so far. No huge plays, but no major gaffes either. The holding penalty on Longwell’s FG that took points off the board was the biggest s.t. play of the game so far.
Sunday November 21, 2010 2:13

Are most of Favre’s incompletions coming from pressure on the pocket or good coverage?
Sunday November 21, 2010 2:15 Ray from Atl

Packers have mixed it up with blitzes and coverage. That last drive, Peterson dropped a short pass in the flat that should have been caught. Favre then overthrew Camarillo on third down when he was open. Shields also broke up a ball to Rice that Hawk almost picked off the deflection, and Favre was yelling for a holding penalty on Shields.
Sunday November 21, 2010 2:16

Sunday November 21, 2010 2:18 Cory

Hard to believe you could find anyone at this stage who could learn the offense fast enough to help out. That’s why they activated Starks (even though he’s not active today) instead of shutting him down for the season, because he’s better than anyone they could pick up off the street at this point. That said, I think Jackson is doing well. Today he’s been a key safety valve for Rodgers on checkdowns. The Packers haven’t rushed for many yards, but Jackson has been a contributor.

Packers have no sacks. Pressures have been several, but I don’t have an official count. The two turnovers in the first half were the biggest plays. MN was in GB territory both times and probably took points off the board with the turnovers.

Rodgers to Driver along the sideline to convert a third down. Driver does great job tip-toeing to stay in bounds and get across the marker. What a play.

Sorry for the delay … my first answer didn’t take. The bottom line is if Favre is truly done after this season, he’ll finish either 3-1 vs. Rodgers/Packers or 2-2. If it’s 3-1, that number will be remembered for a long time.

Sunday November 21, 2010 10:50 SN

Right now Nance has practiced more and had more reps, so he’s active and Starks is not. Starks has had about two weeks of practice and that’s his first full contact since the end of his 2008 season in college. That’s not to say Starks won’t be active at some point by the end of the season, but he needs more time to get banged around and get ready.

Hard to say. I think with Driver and Quarless active we’ll see more four-wide and five-wide sets, which Rodgers likes. Who the ball goes to depends on the defensive set and who’s open, so there’s no way to tell.

Sunday November 21, 2010 10:53 Jeremy

Maybe. But Favre played lights out in the two games against GB last year. It was phenomenal. The Packers certainly didn’t lose those games because of Rodgers, who also played well, but he’ll need a big game today to match what Favre did against GB last year.

The obvious answer is Matthews because of the pass rush needed on Favre. But I’ll take a different tack and say Desmond Bishop. Stopping Peterson is going to be crucial in this game, and Bishop is the biggest hitter of the run stoppers. He has to make some plays, and make his presence known, for Peterson to not take this game over.

The answer is no because of his shin, but the Packers limited him in practice all week so he could be as close to 100 percent as possible for the game. When Matthews plays, it’s all out, all the time. He wouldn’t be playing if he couldn’t go full speed.

Sunday November 21, 2010 11:04 Jeremy

The Bears are solid on defense and special teams, and they’ve made the playoffs plenty with a less-than-dynamic offense. And their offense still has a chance to get going with that Cutler/Martz combination. Let’s just say I think that game at Lambeau on Jan. 2 is going to be must-see TV.

Do the Packers practice differently since the NFL has cracked down on illegal hits?

Sunday November 21, 2010 11:07 Joe

Well, in practice you’re not trying to blow up a receiver coming over the middle because it’s your own teammate, so I don’t think there’s much if any impact on the practice structure. This year, the Packers have had a team tackling period devoted to fundamentals of tackling in practically every practice, but that had to do with the missed tackles on film from last season, not the NFL’s crackdown.

We don’t know because this is his first dome game in the NFL. Punters and kickers generally like the indoors, however. The bigger factor is Percy Harvin on returns, if he’s back there on punts. The Vikings have used Greg Camarillo more on punts and Harvin on kickoffs, though.

Great question, because Sam Shields, Bryan Bulaga and Frank Zombo are all legitimate candidates.

Pickett is scheduled to start, but in the last two games he has played, he hasn’t made it to halftime, leaving more time for Green to play. I know the Packers would like to try a front line of Raji, Pickett and Green together on obvious run downs to see how it fares, because that’s some serious beef.

Sunday November 21, 2010 11:27 jeff

I don’t think it will be a basic package, but you might see it on a third-and-1 or fourth-and-1 or something like that. Might be the most important matchup as far as Packers O vs. Vikings D. Clifton shut out Allen at Lambeau. That will be harder to do here. Hard to say. But he’s starting, so I think unless he has a setback with his quad I expect him to play a lot. He’s had some of the best games of his career in this place.

If the packers win today and the bears lose to the eagles next week, is the division the packers to lose or do the schedules of the pack and bears leave it in the air until the last game?

All right folks, we’re getting close to kickoff. We’ll be providing updates here on scores, injuries, other tidbits we come across, so stay tuned. Vikings take a 3-0 lead on a 24-yard Longwell FG.
Sunday November 21, 2010 12:19
12:20
Vikings got three big plays — a 25-yard run by Peterson, a 19-yard pass to Gerhart to pick up a third-and-12 (Zombo missed a tackle that would have forced a punt), and a 29-yard pass to Lewis. But the Packers D rose up in the red zone and got the stop. 6:06 left in the first.

Sunday November 21, 2010 12:33

Packers have done a great job against Peterson so far except for one play that went for 25 yards. Woodson made a great tackle on a reverse to Harvin on another running play.
Sunday November 21, 2010 12:34
12:37
Gerhart fumbles on a third down completion. Woodson on the strip, Hawk on the recovery. Packers take over on their own 35.

Packers go three-and-out again. Poor punt goes out of bounds at the Minn 28. Packers have 16 yards of total offense so far. One first down in three drives.
Sunday November 21, 2010 12:40
12:45
Defense allows one first down, but then forces a punt. Big hit by Williams on second down to dislodge pass from Lewis for incompletion. Packers take over on own 21. 12:20 left in the half, still 3-0.
Sunday November 21, 2010 12:45

Packers had third-and-4 but Rodgers pass to Driver was broken up by Winfield. A good defensive play.

Packers pooch kickoff to keep ball away from Harvin. Vikes on own 31.
Sunday November 21, 2010 12:54

Packers force three-and-out. Punt goes out of bounds at GB 20. 8:43 left in the half, tied at 3.

1:05

Sunday November 21, 2010 1:09

Peterson getting going, back-to-back carries for 10 and 11 yards. But Packers get him for minus-4, so it’s second-and-14 at the GB 41 at the 2-minute warning.

Bigby is playing. He’s on special teams, and he has rotated in on occasion for Peprah at safety. He made a great shoestring tackle on Harvin on the game’s opening kickoff or the Vikings might have gone up 7-0 right out of the gate.

Packers receive second-half kickoff. Shields runs it back to the 27.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:41

Rodgers to Jennings, 46 yards for TD.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:46
1:46
Jennings makes a great play on a comeback route. He spins away from Asher Allen and then gets Madieu Williams all turned around down the sideline and waltzes into the end zone. It’s 24-3 with 12:01 left in the half.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:46

RG Josh Sitton lost his helmet blocking on that TD play. His helmet was bouncing around on the turf as Rodgers let go of the ball.
Sunday November 21, 2010 1:47

Sunday November 21, 2010 1:57

Are most of Favre’s incompletions coming from pressure on the pocket or good coverage?

Sunday November 21, 2010 2:15 Ray from Atl

Packers have mixed it up with blitzes and coverage. That last drive, Peterson dropped a short pass in the flat that should have been caught. Favre then overthrew Camarillo on third down when he was open. Shields also broke up a ball to Rice that Hawk almost picked off the deflection, and Favre was yelling for a holding penalty on Shields.

I think the Bears are very good on defense and special teams, particularly in the return game with Hester. I think technically twice, though one was when he slid down behind the line of scrimmage, and the other time was on a fumbled snap.

Packers have run it down to the 2-minute warning. Have moved the ball to the MN 32 with Flynn at QB.

Has Clay Matthews had any sacks today?

Matthews was credited for a sack, I believe, when Favre slid down to avoid the pressure outside the pocket in the first quarter. If that holds, that’s 11.5 sacks for Matthews on the season.

Is Nance a potential upcoming running back for us?

Nance has gotten some carries today, which is good. Gets him involved. He had a key pickup on third-and-1 early in the game that I think showed the coaches something.

Well, that’s it from here folks. Packers win 31-3. That’s the fewest points allowed by the Packers at Minnesota since a 3-0 loss in 1971. Packers are 7-3, tied for first place with the Bears, and head to Atlanta next week for a big game against Atlanta. Stay tuned to Packers.com for post-game coverage later tonight.
