Packers-Patriots game blog recap

Posted by Duke Bobber on December 19, 2010 – 11:58 pm

Greetings everyone from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. We’ll have the inactives for you in just a minute.
Sunday December 19, 2010 5:58
5:59

Inactive for the Packers: QB Aaron Rodgers, CB Pat Lee, CB Josh Gordy, RB James Starks, LB Frank Zombo, C/G Nick McDonald, G/T Marshall Newhouse and DE Cullen Jenkins.
Sunday December 19, 2010 5:59
6:00

As pretty much everyone knows by now, QB Matt Flynn will start for Rodgers. Other starting lineup changes are DE Howard Green for Jenkins and LB Erik Walden for Zombo.
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:00
6:06

Inactive for the Patriots: WR Taylor Price, RB Fred Taylor, RB Thomas Clayton, OL Rich Ohrnberger, T Mark LeVoir, DL Myron Pryor, DL Ron Brace and DL Mike Wright.

Why is Starks inactive?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:07 Tom
6:08

Looks like Dimitri Nance is the backup RB to Brandon Jackson tonight, and the Packers have all three FB active — Quinn Johnson, John Kuhn and Korey Hall, who was out last week with an injury. Hard to say exactly why Starks is inactive, except the coaches must like what they see more of Nance in practice lately.

Any starting lineup changes for New England?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:09 Tom
6:10

Taylor at RB and Wright at DE are listed as two starters, so I guess you could say those will change. But BenJarvus Green-Ellis has been the key RB for New England for a while. Looks like rookie Brandon Deaderick, according to the depth chart, would start for Wright.

What are the conditions like in New England?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:10 mike
6:11

Cool and crisp, but wind seems calm at the moment. The forecast for potential snow during the game from earlier in the week seems to have changed. I don’t think they’re expecting a major snowstorm tonight.

I hear even with a loss tonight, Green Bay could secure a wildcard spot with wins over the Giants and Bears the last two weeks of the season. Is that correct?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:13 Tom
6:14

I’m not absolutely 100 percent sure on that, but it appears to be the case. The Tampa Bay loss to Detroit and the NYG collapse against Philly have set the Packers up to earn a Wild Card with a 10-6 record with wins in their last two games. Obviously, to have a realistic chance at the division title, the Packers will need to win this one tonight.

I see Tom Brady has an injured right shoulder and he has only practiced limited practice do you think we will see the patriots running the ball more or do you feel that Tom Brady can still throw the ball
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:32 Mark
6:33

Thanks for your patience, and sorry for the delay. I think Brady is fine. Yes, he was on the injury report, but that’s common for him. Nothing out of the ordinary. I don’t think Brady’s health will have any impact on New England’s game plan.

How bad was Aron Rodgers concussion will he play next week
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:34 ricky
6:37

Two concussions in the same season is a serious matter, and the Packers are taking it seriously. Rodgers was not cleared medically to practice or play this week. We’ll see if he can get clearance next week. I have no idea and there’s no way to predict. Rodgers did travel with the team and he is here in New England tonight, if that means anything as far as his recovery.

Do you think if the packers Defence is solid we could get a win here
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:37 Sunny
6:38

I do think with Flynn at QB that the Packers’ defense needs to play its game of the year. New England has rolled up 81 points on two pretty good defenses — NYJ and Chicago — the last two weeks. Realistically, I don’t think the Packers can expect to score as many points with Flynn as with Rodgers, that’s only logical, so the defense needs to hold New England down as much as possible.

Sunday December 19, 2010 6:38 Logan

There’s always a chance. This is the NFL. The Eagles were down 31-10 halfway through the fourth quarter today and won 38-31. You never know.

Sunday December 19, 2010 6:40 Mark

From a few posts earlier, it appears regardless of tonight’s outcome, if the Packers win their last two games against the Giants and Bears, Green Bay will get one of the NFC’s two wild-card spots.

i have faith in the packers i see them stepping up the D and giving the pats a run for there money
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:42 Mark
6:43

I do think the D will be key tonight, and without Cullen Jenkins and Frank Zombo, there are backups playing on that side too. New England is on a roll and with a backup QB in there, the last thing GB wants is a shootout.
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:43
6:44

[Comment From rickyricky: ]
When will Cullen Jenkins be back.
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:44 ricky
6:44

Coach McCarthy said last week that Jenkins would be “challenged” to play this week or next week. Barring a miraculous recovery, I think he’s targeting the Chicago game on Jan. 2 for a potential return.

How strong do you think Matt Flynn’s performance will be today?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:45 bearpaw
6:46

That’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? I would think Flynn could be more efficient than last week, having gotten all the practice snaps this week. But then again, he’s facing the Patriots and no the Lions. Detroit is proving it is better than that record, but the Lions still aren’t the Patriots. This is a tough test for Flynn.

[Comment From johnjohn: ]
do you think we will see any trick plays or surprise onside kicks tonight?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:46 john
6:47

There’s always a chance of an onside kick if the Packers get too far behind and need to pull out all the stops. They did it in the Arizona playoff game last year in the third quarter to spark that rally. As for trick plays, I have no idea. Trick plays haven’t been common in the McCarthy era, but who knows.

[Comment From AhmedAhmed: ]
How good is the Patriots defense, What weaknesses should the packers go after today?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:47 Ahmed
6:48

Statistically, the Patriots are not ranked all that highly on defense. They have a lot of young players on that side of the ball, but the group has been improving, fast. They allowed only three points to the Jets and seven to the Bears the last two weeks. This defense is growing up in a hurry.

[Comment From AndyAndy: ]
Do you think the packers will try to involve the run game early and often tonight?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:48 Andy
6:49

I think the Packers will try to be as balanced offensively as possible to help Flynn and to control the clock and limit New England’s possessions. That’s easier said than done, however.

[Comment From mikemike: ]
Is Bigby going to play tonight?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:50 mike
6:51

Bigby is active and will play. I would expect to see him on special teams, and possibly rotating in at safety with Charlie Peprah. That’s what his role was before he hurt his hamstring a few weeks ago.

[Comment From LoganLogan: ]
Why is James Starks Inactive?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:51 Logan
6:52

The only thing i can surmise is that Dimitri Nance is outperforming him in practice, so Nance is the backup RB. Also, all three FB are active tonight, so there wasn’t room on the 45 for all three RB (Jackson, Nance, Starks).
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:52

Who do you suspect to be Flynns Favorite Target for tonight
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:55 Billy
6:57

Nothing really shocking here, but I would have to say Jennings. He’s the Packers’ best playmaker at WR, and I expect him to be given a chance to make some plays. That said, if the Patriots target Jennings and bracket him with a safety or help over the top, Flynn will have to look for the underneath stuff, which could be to any of the other WRs, or the RBs.
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:57
6:57

[Comment From EricEric: ]
All 3 fullbacks active….does that mean we are planning on running the ball more or just trying to add depth for special teams?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:57 Eric
6:58

Not necessarily. All three FBs play on special teams, so just because all three are active doesn’t mean they’re all part of the offensive game plan. All three will play, but what the pecking order is as far as the offensive snaps, I don’t know. They’ll all be on the coverage and return units, I expect.

[Comment From HunterHunter: ]
How do you think the Packers defence will react to the Partiots offence?
Sunday December 19, 2010 6:59 Hunter
7:01

Interesting choice of words … react. For as well as the Packers’ defense has played this year, I think they have to realize Brady and the Pats are going to make some plays. They’re just too good. But reacting to those big plays will be key. Hold them to FGs, or bounce back after a TD drive and get a stop. Don’t let that offense get on a roll the way Arizona’s did last January.

[Comment From BillyBilly: ]
How can Sam Shields beat the Pat’ special teams
Sunday December 19, 2010 7:01 Billy
7:02

Shields could play a big role in the return game for the Packers tonight. Nothing will help a backup QB more than good field position. If Flynn has to start too many drives backed up near his goal line, that’s only going to make things harder for him, especially on the road in a prime-time game.

bigger concern…?? packers offense being able to move the ball and score….OR….packers Defense being able to stop brady and company????
Sunday December 19, 2010 7:05 chrisb
7:06

I think it’s the defense, because if Brady gets in a rhythm, it’s hard to say who can stop him. Packers are without Jenkins and Zombo on defense tonight, two solid starters, as well as all the guys who were injured previously. This is a huge task for the Green Bay defense tonight … the best offense they’ve faced all season, without a doubt.

What are the stats on Flynn when he has played in NFL games? For example last week and week 17 last year against the cardinals
Sunday December 19, 2010 7:07 Billy
7:07

Coming into this year, Flynn was 9-of-17 for 64 yards with one interception in his career. Last week he was 15-of-26 for 177 yards with an INT, so combined, that’s 24-of-43, 241 yards, 2 INT to date.

How important is it to get the turnovers in this game.
Sunday December 19, 2010 7:15 Billy
7:16

Turnovers always help, but they’re tough to get against the Patriots. Brady has thrown only four INTs all season. That’s remarkable. But if the Packers can get one or two off of him, it would make a world of difference.

Correction, 31 yards. Crosby is good. It’s 3-0 Packers with 8:45 left in the first quarter. 11 plays, 40 yards, 6:15 time of possession.
Sunday December 19, 2010 7:42
7:43

Flynn made a great throw on a crossing route to Driver for 16 yards to get the Packers in the red zone, but the sack on second down stalled things. Patriots blitzed on both second and third down there and it worked. Still, a good start for GB, but a chance to get a TD was missed for sure.

Masthay credited with a 58 yard punt, thanks to the roll after Edelman couldn’t catch it.
Sunday December 19, 2010 7:58

Big series here for the GB defense. Not a good start on the first drive. Had two chances to get off the field on third down, and Brady hit big passes on both. Woodson dropped the INT. The unit has to bounce back here and not let the Packers fall too far behind.
Sunday December 19, 2010 7:59

Before the first snap of the next series, Flynn takes a timeout. Second TO used by the Packers this half. Have to be careful … use that last timeout and the Packers won’t be able to challenge any officials’ calls until the booth reviews take over at the 2-minute warning.

Flynn was trying to direct someone to line up in a different spot and it didn’t happen, so he burned the timeout. Probably saw a Patriot blitz coming that the protection wasn’t going to cover without the adjustment. When the adjustment didn’t happen, he didn’t risk it.

Story of the game so far has been big third-down conversions. Patriots had two, with big plays, on their TD drive. That TD pass to Jones for GB was on third-and-7.

Packers nearly got another turnover on that last drive. Bishop got the ball out on the sack but couldn’t find it before Brady hauled it in on the ground. The Woodson missed INT and that fumble … hopefully the Packers can keep getting their hands on the ball.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:18

Bad offensive series there for GB. Clifton gets beat for a sack on first down, Nelson drops a pass over the middle on second down. Run play on third-and-17 doesn’t come close.

Short punt by Masthay is returned by Edelman. Hall upends him nicely. 37-yard punt, 7-yard return. Patriots on their own 34, 11:21 left in the half.

Offsides on GB on the punt. Thankfully it was fourth-and-11 so the penalty did not give NE a first down. Williams fields the punt and Packers take over on their own 18. 8:43 left in the half, still 10-7 Packers.

Packers haven’t been afraid to challenge McCourty, NE’s best cover CB, so far. They’ve gone deep on him three times, completing the one for the TD.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:34
8:35

Nelson hangs onto that one to convert a third down. That’s two straight third-down conversions for GB on this drive. 16-yarder for Nelson, first down on the NE 45.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:35
8:36

Helmet-to-helmet hit on McCourty on pass to Quarless gives the Packers another first down. Refs talked about that one for a while, but got it right. Contact was to the helmet, you can see it clearly on replay.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:36
8:39

Good protection for Flynn on third down, he hits Quarless to convert another third down. Packers at the NE 15.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:39

Packers up 17-7. 14 plays, 82 yards, 6:26. What a drive. Four third-down conversions.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:43

Flynn is 11 of 18 for 143 yards with two TDs so far.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:44

An absolutely embarrassing play by the GB special teams. Squib kickoff is returned by lineman Ryan Wendell all the way down inside the GB 10. A 45-yard return by a backup center.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:45
8:46

Correction, that was 71 yards on the return by Dan Connelly.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:46
8:46

2-minute warning. Patriots have second-and-goal on the 2.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:46
8:47

Huge momentum swing there on the KO return. Packers just never got in there to tackle a lineman, and he got outside and kept running.

My sentiments exactly.

Another tackle of Green-Ellis sets up third-and-goal from just outside the 2. Packers have a chance to hold the Patriots to a FG here. NE calls timeout with 1:13 left in the half.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:50
8:50

Big third down coming up.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:50
8:51

Brady to Hernandez for the TD. Brady had all kinds of time and someone eventually was going to come open. 1:08 left in the half.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:51
8:51

It’s 17-14 Packers now.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:51
8:52

Packers have one timeout left, 1:08 on the clock.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:52
8:53

Shields runs the KO back to the 23.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:53
8:54

Packers run Jackson twice and that burns the clock. It’s 17-14 GB at the half.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:54
8:55

Packers will get the ball to start the third quarter after deferring on the coin toss.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:55
8:56

Well, if you had said before the game started the Packers would be up by 3 at the half, you’d take it in a heartbeat. But that KO return by a lineman led to an easy score or the Packers could be up by 10. Lot of game left either way.

I’m impressed by Flynn’s first start in the NFL
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:58 Karen
8:59

I would agree. He’s been under some pressure and scrambled around to avoid some sacks. His accuracy has been pretty good. A couple of dropped passes have hurt his completion percentage. He’s running the offense, just like he’s supposed to, and the Packers are moving the ball pretty regularly.
Sunday December 19, 2010 8:59
9:00

That’s the difference between getting a whole week of practice as the QB and getting thrown in due to an injury. Flynn looks much more in control and confident out there this week. That’s why that backup QB job is so hard when you have to go in mid-game, like last week.

That’s certainly true. He doesn’t appear to get rattled. I’m sure playing in Baton Rouge and in the BCS championship game helps instill that poise and calm.

i think the defense is doing an amazing job tonight
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:01 lisa
9:02

Since NE’s first drive, when Woodson dropped the INT and they allowed Brady to convert a third-and-17, the defense has been very tough. That last TD of course was not the defense’s fault. First-and-goal at the 4 is tough to stop, and they still almost did.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:02
9:03

Flynn is 11 of 18 for 143 with 2 TDs for a 123.1 rating. Brady is 10 of 15 for 81 yards with 1 TD for a 102.4 rating.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:03
9:04

More halftime stats — Packers have 180 yards of offense to the Patriots’ 138. Rushing is 74-50 in New England’s favor. Jones has three catches for 79 yards and a TD to lead all receivers. Both teams have two sacks.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:04
9:05

Packers are 6 of 9 on third down, going 4 of 4 on that long TD drive. Patriots are 4 of 7 after starting 3 of 3, so they’re 1 for their last 4 on third down, the 1 being the TD pass right before half.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:05
9:08

Shields returns the KO out to the 25, but a flag is down.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:08

Holding on Donald Lee. Packers will back up to their own 10. Not a good place to start.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:09
9:13

Touchdown Patriots. Kyle Arrington picks off Flynn and returns it 36 yards for a TD. Breaks about four tackles along the way. 12:04 left in the third.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:13
9:13

It’s 21-17 Patriots.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:13
9:14

The turn of events here in the last two minutes of the first half and first three minutes of the second half is stunning. Packers had a 17-7 lead, but in about 5 minutes they’ve lost it all due to a long KO return by a lineman and a pick-6. Ugh.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:14
9:15

Shields returns the KO out to the 30.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:15

9:23

Facemask on Wilfork gives the Packers a first down at the NE 11.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:23
9:25

Another leap by Kuhn for a TD!!! Third-and-5 from the 6, swing pass in the flat, and Kuhn runs and jumps across the goal line. Four leaps for Kuhn, seven more points for GB.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:25
9:25

Sunday December 19, 2010 9:37

Another great play by Kuhn. Knocks down the DL with the chip block, then catches the dump off pass and weaves his way for 9 yards to convert a third-and-7. End of the third quarter. Packers have first-and-goal on the 2.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:39

Sunday December 19, 2010 9:50
9:50

Pass is incomplete. Batted up into the air and almost picked off by Walden on the dive.
Sunday December 19, 2010 9:50
