Monday’s coverage

CB Charles Woodson had the role of locker-room speaker kind of forced upon him for the playoffs, but the veteran has embraced the role and his teammates clearly appreciate his efforts. That’s the subject of today’s feature story.

Also, the Packers’ sendoff from Lambeau Field and arrival in Dallas included lots of Green Bay fans in the background, and the intense media coverage of the week was just beginning. That leads off today’s notebook.

Sunday’s coverage

It’s often been said that a different defensive player has stepped up to make a big play every time the Packers have needed one this year. That’s not as big an exaggeration as it might seem, if you check out today’s feature story.

Sunday press conference notes

Posted by Mike Spofford on January 30, 2011 – 12:57 pm

From the Packers’ official Twitter account, here’s a summary of the live tweets from Head Coach Mike McCarthy’s Sunday press conference, the last visit with the media before the team heads to Dallas on Monday:

Team practiced 20 minutes longer than normal “Friday” structure on Sunday. Still some work in Dallas, but got a lot done today.

“Our guys are ready to go to Dallas. They’re excited,” McCarthy says.

If weather is a factor in Dallas, or there’s injury risk, team will use indoor facility available. Wind is bigger factor than temperature.

Plan is still for LB Erik Walden to return to practice field on Wednesday.

On flap over IR players: “We’re all grown men. Aaron and Nick spoke yesterday. It’s a non-issue.”

Matthews would be deserving of Defensive Player of the Year, if he gets it Monday, McCarthy said.

Jog-through component of practice will be at hotel in Dallas. So team will be on the field a shorter period of time than normal.

Walden is still starter at OLB. He has earned that, McCarthy said. Will be given every opportunity to get ready for the game.

Sunday practice report

Posted by Mike Spofford on January 30, 2011 – 11:19 am

The third and final practice in Green Bay to prepare for the Super Bowl was much like the first two in terms of participation.

LB Erik Walden (ankle) continued to sit out, while LB Frank Zombo practiced for the third straight day after missing six consecutive games.

The rest of the players appeared to be taking their normal reps in the opening periods open to media.

This was the Packers’ final practice until Wednesday down in Texas, where they will practice at Southern Methodist University’s stadium.

Coach McCarthy will address the media following practice, and will have updates and a transcript. Stay tuned also for a feature story and notes today.
