What is the defensive plan to contain vick
Sunday January 9, 2011 2:11 jarret
2:12

I could tell you, but then you’d have to keep it secret. Ha ha. Honestly, I don’t know what the plan is. Logic would dictate you have to mix things up. Can’t do the same thing all the time. I would expect some blitzes off the slot (Woodson), some up the middle (Bishop, Hawk), and some snaps where the defense drops 8 into coverage. That, and discipline from the pass rushers to stay in their lanes so Vick can’t escape easily.

Will Jenkins start today, or work him in slowly?
Sunday January 9, 2011 2:13 AO
2:14

I don’t know if he’ll start or not, but I would imagine his snaps will have to be limited after missing the last four games. There’s just no way a player can be in shape to go 50 or 60 snaps after that much time off. But the good thing about Jenkins is he can anchor against the run and rush the passer, so you can use him in different packages, even if you are limiting his workload.

Do you think the weather will have an impact on the passing game?
Sunday January 9, 2011 2:14 Lauren
2:15

Good question. I walked out onto the field before coming up here to the press box and it seemed pretty windy. I think it could play a factor on deep throws, but then again, no guarantee the wind will stay the same throughout the game. Temperature-wise, it’s not bad at all. The wind is really the only factor.

Does Seattle winning have any impact on who the Packers would play next…if they win?
Sunday January 9, 2011 2:15 Scott
2:16

No. The Packers will play at Atlanta next Saturday night if they win today. That was the scenario regardless of the New Orleans-Seattle outcome. The team waiting to see whom it plays is Chicago. If the Packers win, the Seahawks go to Chicago. If Philly wins, the Eagles go to Chicago.

Do you have any concerns about Lesean McCoy?
Sunday January 9, 2011 2:16 Wes
2:17

Absolutely. I think McCoy is a very underrated offensive weapon for Philly because Vick and Jackson get so much attention. McCoy led this team in receptions as well as rushing yards, obviously. He’s a workhorse who can do a lot, and you can bet the Packers watched a lot of film on him.

Who do you think is the X-Factor is for both teams?
Sunday January 9, 2011 2:18 Lauren
2:19

For the Eagles, I think it’s TE Brent Celek. Remember, the Eagles don’t even make that comeback against the Giants if not for Celek’s long catch and run for a TD to start things. For the Packers? Hmmm … I’ll go with Sam Shields. The defensive backfield was a mess last season in the playoffs at Arizona, and Shields is a big upgrade at nickel from where the Packers were a year ago. But it’s also his first playoff game. He needs to play well.

Does Dom Capers have a history of defending againest Vick, good or bad?
Sunday January 9, 2011 2:40 Scott
2:41

Nobody really looked into that, so that’s an interesting question. When Vick first came into the league, Capers was in Houston, so Atlanta and Houston would have matched up only once in that time, if at all (AFC-NFC). Probably Week 1 this year was Capers’ most extensive exposure to Vick, though I don’t know that for a fact.

Sunday January 9, 2011 2:42 Scotty V

You certainly need to limit Jackson’s opportunities, just like the Packers did with Hester last week. On eight punts, Hester only got two returns, which was outstanding. Masthay needs another strong game for the Packers today.

I’m just guessing, but based on his experience level, I think Jackson will get most of the carries today. As for 100 yards rushing, I’m not counting on it. The ground game hasn’t been reliable enough. But I will say this — I think if the Packers do rush for 100 yards today, they’ll win the game.

Sunday January 9, 2011 2:47 Matt

I don’t think so. Normally if a player is probable on the injury report, the injury isn’t a concern. Jenkins was questionable, so his calf is probably the one to worry about.

I sense the Packers are confident, but they’re taking nothing for granted, obviously. I think last year’s playoff game sticks in their minds somewhat, and that’s probably a good thing. Anyone who watched the Seattle-New Orleans game yesterday knows that in the end, all the pre-game analysis is useless once the game kicks off. It’s about how the players perform, and I think the Packers feel if they play their game, they can come out on top.

I don’t talk to the players before a game, but I did see when Crosby was warming up that he tried a 50-yard FG that was into the wind and it came up well short. The wind is definitely going to be a factor today.

Good question. I think overall Green Bay’s defense is stronger, and guys like Woodson, Collins and Matthews are big playmakers. But the Eagles are no strangers to the playoffs, and CB Asante Samuel has done a lot of damage in the postseason. He’s returned four INTs for TDs in the playoffs alone in his career.

Do you think they should put a spy on Vick like putting clay matthews on him?
Sunday January 9, 2011 2:53 Sam
2:54

I think you’ll see something like that employed, but not necessarily on every play. Walden was the spy on Cutler last week against the Bears, so we’ll see if he’s used in a similar capacity today. The flip side is, it’s hard to say how much help a spy can be when Vick is fast enough to outrun and out-maneuver anybody you employ as a spy. So that’s why I don’t think that strategy will be used every snap.

Edgar Bennett came out in defense of Starks saying that basically it was for lack of effort that his practices weren’t on par, just learning the pace, speed etc., of the game. Do you think that endorsement, along with a seemingly better nose for the hole will get him more touches today?
Sunday January 9, 2011 2:55 Randy
2:56

A good point, and that could be a signal Starks is going to be used more. But the moment they see anything shaky as far as his ball-security, that will be it. Starks’ high running style would seemingly make him vulnerable to ball-security issues. Not saying he is, but I don’t think he’s played enough in the NFL to know one way or the other.

Sunday January 9, 2011 2:57 Ethan
2:58

The close losses have been tough, no doubt, and I do believe this game is going to come down to the end. It just has that feel to it. Hopefully the Packers can be on the right end of things this time. But either way, I do expect it to be close. Did you know that the Packers have not trailed in a game this season by more than 7 points at any time? That’s pretty remarkable, and the first time GB has done that since the 1970 merger. That’s the main reason the Packers have been in so many close games.

I’ve been wondering that myself all week. I think it will be very interesting to see how the Eagles use Samuel. He’s clearly their best corner, so I would think they’d try to limit Jennings as much as possible. How big of an impact will Raji make today?
Sunday January 9, 2011 3:00 Guest

Raji’s play in the middle will be key against McCoy on his runs up the middle, and against Vick as far as pushing the pocket back into him. If Vick doesn’t have space in front of him to step up into, and the outside rushers are staying in their lanes, it will be tough for him to scramble. That’s what the Packers want.

It certainly can’t hurt to have him back, but how much he plays and how effective he’ll be remain to be seen. He didn’t rush back from this calf injury. He was out four weeks, and he didn’t even practice during that time, not returning to the practice field until this week. So he should be good to go, though not for all the snaps like usual.

Sunday January 9, 2011 3:02 kyle

I’ve seen this question asked a lot. Jackson is a speed demon and capable of the home run at any time. I personally think Jennings is a more complete receiver, able to run all the routes, inside and outside, make the tough catches and hit the home runs. They’re both Pro Bowlers, obviously, so it’s sort of splitting hairs. Jackson is probably “scarier” but Jennings is more of a seasoned pro.

What do you think the Eagles will do about Charles Woodson’s blitzing today?
Sunday January 9, 2011 3:04 Paul Van Moorleghem
3:05

I would expect the Eagles to be ready for Woodson blitzing from the slot, because Minnesota killed them with Winfield doing that a couple weeks ago. So I would think Capers would mix things up. Woodson might blitz from different spots, or maybe Woodson drops into coverage and one of the corners from out wide — Williams or Shields — comes on a blitz instead. All those things are in the playbook.

Do you think there will be any holdover with Bulaga from last week, or will they have got him corrected during the week, as those panalties could be crucial
Sunday January 9, 2011 3:10 Guest

I agree, penalties could be crucial. Bulaga had the right attitude during the week — he watched the film, learned from his mistakes, and he’s moving on. I think he’ll be fine. I also think one of those holding calls on him last week was really questionable, and on one of his false starts, he thought the defensive player jumped so he was trying to draw the offsides. Turned out the defensive guy didn’t enter the neutral zone, so the flag was on Bulaga. That’s something he’ll learn from.

Sunday January 9, 2011 3:13 Brent

I think it’s both. Against a blitz, Vick will look for his hot routes, and if they’re not there, he’s going to tuck it and run. But the hot routes, in my opinion, will be the first option.

How do you see the problem with lack of W’s in close games. McCarthy’s tendency to be predictable and or/conservative in offensive play calling, or lack of killer instinct with Rodgers? Neither?
Sunday January 9, 2011 3:15 Randy
3:17

I think the “close games” thing with McCarthy and Rodgers is overblown. No one wants to give them credit for beating the Eagles by 7 and the Bears by 7, when both teams were driving for the tying score at the end this year, because the margin was 7. That’s still a close game, in my book. In other close games, there have been missed field goals (Washington), special teams coverage breakdowns (Atlanta) and other factors, just this year. The good news is the Packers have been in plenty of close games, so they’re no strangers to that scenario, and I don’t think they’ll tighten up if today’s game goes that way.

Great question. I think that’s where this team has missed Grant and Finley the most, on the goal line. Grant in the I-formation has been pretty darn effective in goal-line situations in his career, and if teams load up to stop the run there, play-action to Finley is almost unstoppable. I just don’t think the Packers have adequately replaced those options down on the goal line, and they’re still looking for something more reliable.

Mike, don’t you think Kuhn has helped with 3rd and short down the stretch?
Sunday January 9, 2011 3:25 PA.PackerBacker
3:26

Absolutely, he has helped, but he’s been stopped on the goal line sometimes too. You need more than one option or it’s too easy for the defense to key on someone. If the Packers had another tried-and-true option on the goal line to go with Kuhn, you’d have the same Grant-Finley combo I talked about earlier. Donald Lee has caught TD passes at the goal line the last two games, so maybe that’s developing into another bona fide option.

There’s been a lot of talk about Mick Vick, and shutting him down for Green Bay to win. There are many players on a team and concentrating on one player is a bit of an insult to a team who has reached the dizzying heights of the wild card playoffs – don’t you think? Although I myself think Green Bay will win, I don’t think we should underestimate our adversary….?
Sunday January 9, 2011 3:37 Linda
3:38

I do think Vick is a major key, but in a more general sense, I think it’s limiting Philly’s big plays. If they have to take 10-12 plays to drive down the field, I like the GB defense’s chances of forcing a mistake or holding them to a field goal. If the Eagles start getting chunks of yardage, 30 or 40 or 50 at a time, whether it’s Vick, Jackson, McCoy or whoever, then it could be a long day.

I’ll cut Jennings some slack on his drop because it didn’t look like he got his head turned around fast enough. But the Jones one was inexcusable. It couldn’t have been easy to throw that laser right on target with this wind like it is.
