So do you think that John Abraham’s groin injury could come into effect tonight?
Saturday January 15, 2011 5:33 Jackson
5:33

I doubt it. It sounded like the Falcons had him take it easy in practice this week so he’d be ready to go. I wouldn’t expect it to be an issue.

Did they weather create any problems for the Packers getting to the Stadium since they had to stay about an hour away?
Saturday January 15, 2011 5:36 Big Dave

No, there’s still some snow down here, but all the ice on the roads has pretty much melted. There were no issues.

What do you think is the key to this offense? Rodgers and the passing game or Starks and the running game?
Saturday January 15, 2011 5:36 Jeff
5:38

I think it’s a matter of balance. If the running game is working, then that will help keep the down-and-distances in your favor and take the crowd out of things. When you’re in third-and-10, this place is going to get ridiculously noisy. The Packers proved last time down here they can throw the ball against this defense. A running game to go with it should make that passing game even more effective.

Do you think the extra week of rest will favor the Falcons?
Saturday January 15, 2011 5:38 Arnie
5:40

A week of rest never hurts after a long season, but there’s also something to be said for the momentum the Packers have. They’ve played three do-or-die games in a row, and that has the team confident and not worried about how tired they are or how rested the other team is. In the last 10 years, the No. 1 seed in the NFC has only lost twice in this round after a week off, but one of those was three years ago when the Giants went to Dallas and beat the Cowboys (and then came to Lambeau, and we all know what happened …)

[Comment From Tim VTim V: ]
What do you think dom capers will do to contain michael turner while still keeping track of gonzalez and white?
Saturday January 15, 2011 5:40 Tim V
5:42

That’s the million dollar question. The Packers know they must stop Turner, but Ryan and his passing weapons are no slouches either. I would expect to see Williams on White most of the game. An extra safety in the box to help stop the run might be employed occasionally. The toughest matchup might be Gonzalez, especially if a safety is up closer to the line for the run.

[Comment From Walter FindleyWalter Findley: ]
I contend thet th packers are thr faster team. Can the dome help them in a ironic way?
Saturday January 15, 2011 5:42 Walter Findley
5:43

The Packers aren’t worried about the Dome environment, especially in the sense that it’s ideal conditions for the passing game. Rodgers has stellar numbers in domes. Obviously the noise will be an issue tonight with this being the playoffs and all, but this team likes it’s chances in a climate-controlled environment.

[Comment From MontezonMontezon: ]
What player is going to be an X-factor tonight? Who is the player to watch for?
Saturday January 15, 2011 5:43 Montezon
5:44

For the Packers, I’ll say Sam Shields. I think because of the resources needed to stop the run, Shields will be one-on-one with an Atlanta receiver much of the game, and he’ll have to hold up. For the Falcons, I say it’s Gonzalez, as mentioned in the previous post.
Saturday January 15, 2011 5:44
5:45

Inactives are in. Inactive for the Packers tonight: QB Graham Harrell (3rd QB), S Atari Bigby, RB Dimitri Nance, FB Korey Hall, CB Josh Gordy, LB Frank Zombo, C/G Evan Dietrich-Smith, C/G Nick McDonald.

How far has Starks come from the beginning of the season to now
Saturday January 15, 2011 5:45 Tyler
5:46

It’s not even from the beginning of the season but from midseason. On the PUP list for the first half of the year, Starks couldn’t even practice. And he hadn’t played in a game since his junior year in college. Considering all that, to put up 123 yards in a playoff game was remarkable.

Which inactive player do you feel will be missed the most by the Packers?
Saturday January 15, 2011 6:03 Big Dave
6:04

To be honest, I would probably say none, because those players haven’t been playing key roles in the current winning streak. It would have been nice to get Bigby and Hall back for special teams, but then again, you’re messing with the continuity if you throw them back in there now.

How big a factor has Zombo been for your Def. This year.
Saturday January 15, 2011 6:05 Clyde
6:06

Zombo hasn’t played in the last four games, but he was a big factor against Atlanta the first time in late November. He had a sack and held up pretty well against the run, even though Turner topped 100 yards. I’m sure they’d like to have Zombo for the run defense, but they’ll have to make up for it in other ways.

In your opinion, are the Packers better off committing to the run-game or trying to win a shoot-out?
Saturday January 15, 2011 6:09 Bagofdonuts
6:10

I think when you’re on the road, it’s hard to dictate how the game is going to go, and Atlanta is very good at ball-control, so I don’t think a shootout would be a bad thing. But Starks and the running game can help with the crowd, I think, so the Packers will want to be balanced.

[Comment From ChrisChris: ]
do you think the packers’ short yardage running game will finally come around this week?
Saturday January 15, 2011 6:11 Chris
6:12

I think the emergence of Starks gives the Packers another legitimate option, especially around the goal line. Last time down here it was goal-line failures that cost the Packers the game. Hopefully Starks running the ball, or carrying out a play-action fake, will help Green Bay.

It sounds like the Falcons feel like the Packers received more attention from the media this week and have a chip on their shoulder. Is that the feeling in Atlanta?
Saturday January 15, 2011 6:22 Big Dave
6:23

Maybe, but I think the “disrespect” card is overplayed. The Packers got a lot of attention because they won a road game last week and are a hot team. The Falcons had a week off. If Atlanta is using that as motivation, more power to them I guess. But I don’t think it matters once the ball is kicked off.

will james jones see less time tonight after his drops the past few weeks?
Saturday January 15, 2011 6:25 JennSterger

I don’t think so. The Packers are going to use four receivers (Jennings, Driver, Jones, Nelson) quite a bit, and maybe even a fifth in Swain. Jones has had his share of drops, sure, but he’s also made some big plays for this team. I realize fans don’t feel like they can trust him, but the QB can’t play like that. He has to throw to the open guy.

Do you expect a lot of blitzing from Capers or to play more zone like they did last week? They kept LeSean Mccoy to a minimum last week.
Saturday January 15, 2011 6:31 Jackson
6:32

I think this is a completely different offense from Philly, but in a game-plan sense, I expect it to be similar in that Capers will mix things up. Blitz some, drop back into coverage some, stack the box against the run to stop Turner. You have to keep changing things up so the offense doesn’t get in a rhythm doing one thing in particular.

They’re really not much different, at least from where I sit. They’re all loud, lots of echoes, etc. I think it helps the Packers that they play in so many domes every year. Minnesota and Detroit for sure, and in recent years they’ve played in Arizona, St. Louis, here, etc. These guys are no strangers to domes.

Saturday January 15, 2011 6:37 Richard
6:38

I think Matthews is very underrated against the run, and I would expect Atlanta to actually run away from Matthews because they’ll see the Packers as more vulnerable to the run on the other side. Slowing down Turner will require a major team effort tonight. Not one guy that can do it alone.

What are your thoughts on the Packers using James Starks as more of a decoy this week, given the attention he has been given all week since his breakout game? Let them keep 7 or stack 8 in the box, and beat the safeties up top. I dont think it would be a bad week to be pass heavy.
Saturday January 15, 2011 6:38 Jason
6:39

I think there’s a chance of that, but it will only last so long if you don’t actually give him the ball too. Rodgers is very good at reading defenses at the snap and changing the play if he needs to. I’m sure there will be plenty of times he’ll come up to the line, and if he sees them stacked for Starks, he’ll change to a pass. Or if the safeties are back, he’ll change to a run and hand it off. It’s part of the game plan every week, and Rodgers is good at it. He just looks even better at it when the run game is working, like last week.

I think Raji is a key against Turner, but him having a big game won’t necessarily mean a bunch of tackles and sacks. If he’s holding the point in the middle and letting the linebackers get to the ball and make tackles, Raji is doing his job. He’ll need to be big, in that way, tonight.

Saturday January 15, 2011 6:41 Nick

That’s a great question. Gonzalez is a tough matchup for anyone, and I think he had six catches against GB last time (though one shouldn’t have counted). I’m not sure if Capers will put Woodson on him, or Collins, or go with a linebacker. My guess is they’ll use various guys so Ryan doesn’t always know what the D is up to.

I think the last part of your comment is a bit of an exaggeration, but I do think Driver could be a big part of the plan. I think Atlanta will try like mad not to give up the big plays, like the deep ones to Jennings. That means Rodgers will have to be patient and take the underneath stuff, and that could mean Driver.

The Falcons haven’t been a huge sack team, though Abraham had around 13 I think. Clifton will need to handle Abraham, and if the Packers can keep Rodgers upright, I think they like their chances throwing the ball in this dome.

Last question – two parter: when is the last time the Packers returned a kickoff/punt for a touchdown? How does Atlanta stack up on kick coverage?
Saturday January 15, 2011 6:46 Jason

The last time the Packers ran a punt back for a touchdown was Will Blackmon, I believe, in 2008. The last kickoff return for a touchdown was Allen Rossum 10 years ago. The Falcons are solid on special teams. Their return man, Eric Weems, is also one of their leading tacklers. He’s a real special teams demon.

Saturday January 15, 2011 6:48 James
6:50

I think putting a team away is harder than it sounds. These teams are all good, especially in the playoffs. Everyone can come back from deficits or they wouldn’t be here. I think when teams run the ball with the lead, everyone says they’re too conservative. But then when they pass and get sacked or intercepted, everyone says why aren’t you running it? I don’t think coaches worry about the score too much and just stick to the game plan for the most part, until the fourth quarter anyway.

With the Atlanta nickel back out should this hurt their coverage when GB goes to 4 WR?
Saturday January 15, 2011 6:58 Gaffer

Perhaps. I think the Packers will be keeping an eye on who the Falcons employ at nickel with Williams out. Might try to attack there and see if he holds up.

The Packers failed twice at the goal line on offense and didn’t get a turnover on defense. I think that was the difference in that game.

I’m sure that was part of the plan all week. I think the only reason Green wasn’t active last week was the Packers planned to use a lot of nickel defense, which Green doesn’t play.
