The Minnesota Vikings got their quarterback of the future in Christian Ponder from Florida State, a pick that’s a big surprise at No. 12 overall. Many projections had Ponder late in the first round at best, or second round. Three QBs had already come off the board in Cam Newton, Jake Locker and Blaine Gabbert, the latter two being players the Vikings probably would have loved to take.
Before the pick, there was talk about the Vikings trading out of the spot, probably because of the QBs who had already gone off the board. Perhaps they didn’t find a deal to their liking, or they just really like Ponder that much. The question is does drafting Ponder take the Vikings out of the market for a veteran QB in free agency, whenever free agency starts? We’ll see.
Detroit took DT Nick Fairley from Auburn. He’ll be next to Ndamukong Suh, the No. 2 overall pick last year, in the middle of Detroit’s defensive line. An impressive duo, for sure. That could be a combo people are talking about for a long, long time.
