Day Five started off in Wausau at a visit Tyler’s Home for Kids, a respite home for children with special needs ranging from cerebral palsy, autism and Downs syndrome. The home offers care for children so parents can take a moment of rest.
During the week, the home offers regular day care services, in addition to special needs care, according to Heidi Elgersma, the facility’s manager. On the weekends, children often stay for a 48-hour period while their parents take a weekend away.
“We’ll have eight children here, typically, on a weekend,” she said. “We’re the only facility like this in our area, and we have families come to us from far away.
“Some of our kids are real fans, so this is a special treat for them.”
The tour members played with the children, posed for pictures, signed autographs and left a few gifts.
Matt Flynn was especially taken by a Mattel animal sounds toy.
“This was one of my favorite toys as a kid,” he said with a smile.
Tonight’s tour stop is at Green Bay East High School to benefit Green Bay Public Schools. Tickets will be available at the event.
