“Derek Sherrod is fully recovered. You can see that. He just needs to play. He needs to practice. He needs a full training camp,” Packers Coach Mike McCarthy said of the team’s 2011 first-round draft pick, whose career up to this point has been derailed by a broken leg he sustained late in his rookie season. Sherrod’s recovery further deepens an offensive line that also welcomes back Bryan Bulaga following a season lost to knee surgery.
“It was good to get Nick (Perry) back out there. You can’t have enough really good football players,” McCarthy added of the team’s 2012 first-round pick, who particiated in his first practice on Thursday since last season. The first two seasons of Perry’s career have also been compromised by injury.
Add to the list of returning talent safety Sean Richardson, who missed most of last season with a neck injury. Richardson has emerged in the first week of this training camp as one of its stars. On Thursday, he stepped into the limelight when starting safety Morgan Burnett was sidelined by an ankle injury.
“Any time someone’s not there, it gives someone else an opportunity. I think Sean Richardson is having an excellent camp. Ha Ha is getting acclimated. Chris Banjo’s had a good camp. I like the young guys out there, too,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy also commented in his post-practice press conference on GM Ted Thompson’s new contract.
“I’m very happy for Ted. It’s well deserved. It doesn’t seem like we’re going on nine years. I think we have a very good relationship,” McCarthy said.
