140806-janis-300GREEN BAY–Add Jeff Janis to the competition at wide receiver.

The rookie from Saginaw Valley State beat cornerback Sam Shields to make a one-handed touchdown catch of a Scott Tolzien pass in the back-left corner of the end zone in Wednesday’s practice. Janis, a seventh-round draft pick, had missed the first week of training camp with an illness and was in his first day of full participation on Wednesday. His catch got the loudest cheer to that point in practice.

Another rookie wide receiver, second-round pick Davante Adams, immediately followed Janis’ catch with a one-handed grab of a Matt Flynn touchdown pass.

Those were the highlight plays of the first half of practice on a warm, sunny day at Ray Nitschke Field.

Rookie tight end Richard Rodgers and second-year linebacker Nate Palmer engaged in a spirited post-play exchange early in practice, and Derek Sherrod was working at both tackle positions, seemingly as Don Barclay’s replacement at right tackle. Barclay sustained a knee injury on Tuesday and was not present at practice on Wednesday. Sherrod turned in solid pass-blocking efforts at both tackle spots against impressive rookie linebacker Jayrone Elliott.

Safety Morgan Burnett (oblique) did not practice.

Packers.com will provide a report during Coach Mike McCarthy’s press conference.
