“I’m looking for players to jump out. I want someone to jump out and do what they’re supposed to do and with energy and efficiency so you say I want to give that player more opportunity,” McCarthy said on Thursday when asked about Saturday’s preseason opener in Nashville against the Titans.
Safety is one of those positions where competition will be featured, and McCarthy praised two safeties from the deeper reaches of that competition.
“Sean Richardson has had a helluva training camp. Sean has done a lot of good things. You could say the same thing about Chris Banjo,” McCarthy said, adding, “I look at Morgan Burnett as a starter.”
Burnett has been sidelined by an oblique injury and is one of seven players that won’t make the trip to Nashville. McCarthy said he plans to play young reserves throughout the fourth quarter, to aid General Manager Ted Thompson in his personnel evaluations.
“We want to make sure we’re getting as much information and creating as much opportunity as possible for these guys,” McCarthy said.
The coach is also excited for the opportunity the game will afford him.
“I’m excited to go call a game. It’s awesome to call a football game in the NFL. I have to get back into the rhythm,” he said.
