140819-news-now-thompson-300GREEN BAY–Packers General Manager Ted Thompson is not alarmed by the league’s new major point of emphasis and the avalanche of penalties it’s produced in this preseason.

“It’s just the way it is. The league has deemed it appropriate to cut back on some of the contact on the outside. Pay attention to it and call it pretty strict. Players will adjust to it over a period time, just as players always do,” Thompson said at his weekly training camp press conference on Tuesday.

“We’ve got an important two weeks right in front of us,” he said, referring to the Packers’ final two preseason games, against the Raiders and Chiefs. The Packers open the regular season in Seattle, which means the Packers will be facing three consecutive teams whose personnel director formerly worked under Thompson.

“We play Reggie McKenzie’s team, John Dorsey’s team and John Schneider’s team. I’m looking forward to seeing those guys,” Thompson said.

Thompson spent last Saturday’s preseason game in St. Louis on the Packers sideline.

“You can see the glassiness of the eyes. I can see things that are important to me in terms of character and mental toughness. There are little tidbits I’m able to pick up on,” Thompson said.
