GREEN BAY – The Packers have yet to release their final schedule for training camp, but Head Coach Mike McCarthy confirmed the five-game preseason will result in more night practices.
Other than the annual Family Night practice, the Packers have conducted only one night practice the past two years.
The Packers’ first preseason game against Indianapolis on Aug. 7 means they could start practicing on Sunday, July 24. Instead, McCarthy said they’ll start on a Tuesday, July 26.
“Volume of work is still higher than we’ve ever had,” McCarthy said. “You have to take into account we’re playing another football game, too.”
McCarthy gave his team on Thursday morning its final message before the players are excused for the offseason. Strength and conditioning coordinator Mark Lovat, nutritionist Adam Korzun and head athletic trainer Bryan Engel also spoke to the team.
McCarthy was pleased with the progress that players made this offseason, adding that several players put on “eight-to-10 pounds of lean muscle mass” during the nine-week program.
“We talked about what we accomplished the past nine weeks and how good we should feel about the workload, the quality of it, and the investment everybody has made,” McCarthy said.
“Make sure everybody has a clear understanding of the expectations for the next five weeks and the responsibility everyone has to one another to make sure these nine weeks and everything we accomplished is a big platform for us to jump off of. At the end of practice, I’m going to break them really quick. The message has been delivered.”
Rookies will be here Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday next week for their on-site symposium. Veterans will be excused for the next five weeks following the end of practice.
As is customary during the spring, McCarthy doesn’t address injuries but said he doesn’t have any long-term concerns for anyone who has missed practice time this offseason. He expects a healthy team come late July.
“I’ll be disappointed if everybody isn’t ready to go,” McCarthy said.
